Right she could work with that. She could stick around until he went down. “I feel like I need a sword,” she managed before he took on the boar and she was sure she was going to be sick again. With the animal dealt with she peeked her head around the corner, too curious not to. She wanted to know what the hell was going on and looking seemed like the best way to determine what was going on.
He saw her looking around the corner. She was at least staying mostly out of sight, though he honestly didn't know if that mattered or not. They weren't dealing with people they were dealing with fucking insane animals. “Anything coming this way?” he asked, just as bats started to swoop in close, and he ducked.
She shook her head to start. “Not yet. There’s everything. Even the horses. Some of them still have saddles.” Which meant they were trained, broken horses, not the wild kind. She covered her head at the screech of bats. “The birds and bats’ll be the biggest problem.”
Caleb moved just enough that he could see too, and spotted a tent go down, and what seemed like immediately go up in flames. More screams ripped through the night. “You should get to the castle,” he said, turning his attention in that direction. There wasn't a straight shot, and he knew better than to move through a battle ground without a plan, so he didn't have anyone moving just yet.
Marian looked back at him, shaking her head. “We. You meant to say we.” She wasn’t leaving him. Not when he was the one with a sword. She looked back towards the castle, frowning. “What if it’s bad there too?” It wasn’t something that couldn’t be seen from here, not something obvious at least. It wasn’t on fire or anything.
“I said what I meant,” he said, eyes still tracking action. “There's rooms you can shut in there, and there's the palace guard. It's a stone structure, it's not going to catch on fire like this.” So, even if there were animals attacking in there, it would be better than being out here, exposed.
“I’m not leaving you here,” Marian insisted. “Like you said it’s safer there.” She pulled at his arm. “Come on we go together.”
“You aren't leaving me here,” he confirmed. He hadn't planned on her going alone, that would be stupid. He'd been planning to escort her. He watched for another few long moments, then nodded to the next structure he could see. “Stay behind me, we're running to that, on the left side,” he instructed, then waited a beat, before he started the run.
Well, that at least made more sense. She wasn't about to leave him behind, not at this point. Then he was running and Marian was hot on his heels, gathering up the bottom of her dress to run with him, hurrying as well as she could. She needed to get a change of clothes if they were going to do more of this later. The dress was not conducive to running.
Caleb swung at another buck that was heading their way, sheering off half of it's head and it dropped to the ground. They got to the second place just fine, but he saw fire starting to head in their direction fast. “Second round, follow me,” he said, not giving a destination this time, because he didn't see it through the smoke. But he would do his best to get her closer to the castle as fast as he could.
