It Is Pitch Black…
Title: It Is Pitch Black…
Rating: PG (one bad word)
Fandom: Zork
Character: One hapless adventurer and the thing in the dark
Wordcount: 149
Warnings: Not beta’d. Mostly in second person, which I don’t do often, so it may suck.
Disclaimer: Zork was created 25+ years ago by people who had no idea how influential they would end up being. ;-)
Notes: Most people are probably too young to remember the original text-based Zork trilogy, but I learned how to type way back in the early 80’s by playing those (and other, similar) games. When I saw “Dark”, this instantly sprang to mind.
Bleeding and breathless, you stumble away from the corpse of the troll. Who’d’ve thought you’d find something that big in a cellar of a tiny little house? You decide that the direction opposite from where it came from is the safest, so you rest a moment before moving on.
The light from the intersection doesn’t last long. You fumble in the dark for something to guide your way, hands still shaking from the previous encounter. There are no switches on the wall, and no sconces with a dried stick to light. You are trying to remember if you bothered to pick up anything other than the pepper sandwich from upstairs when something breathes nearby.
You scream, but it’s already caught you. Your last thoughts as something sharp starts eating you is something your great-aunt always said: “Take a damn light with you, idiot! You’ll get eaten by a Grue!”
