"I'm married now, so if I eat a little steak and want to have sex, it's really not going to cause any problems."
THE BEAST WITHIN
By Brynja D. Wood
What happens to a man when he's bitten by a werewolf? He undergoes a terrifying and painful transformation with every full moon that transforms him into a dangerous beast. Without control his body is stretched and reshaped until he is a snarling, howling monster with a thirst for blood. As terrifying as this concept is to those around him, it is even more horrifying to the victim of the transformation. To know that you could harm another human being, maybe even someone you love, without any control, is the most frightening knowledge of all.
What happens to a man when he's bitten by a werewolf in human form? Something far less terrifying. The first man to ever find out what happens was William Arthur Weasley, hero of the second war and brother of Ronald Weasley. Weasley was bitten by Fenrir Greyback in June of 1996, while defending the students of Hogwarts from the attack that ended in Albus Dumbledore's death. Weasley's face was horribly scarred, but he was not transformed. He could not infect others nor could he be infected by a full werewolf bite after. He entered a unique state. A year later, after the culmination of the war, Fenrir had created many more like him. Bill Weasley's kind became known as Half Moons.
In a post-war world of tolerance towards those of muggle blood, there is still a great amount of discrimination against Werewolves and Half Moons alike. This may be the reason why Kevin Entwhistle, the heartthrob lead singer and songwriter of Chalk on the Board, kept his bite a secret for five years. During the war Kevin felt the very real intolerance for his muggle blood. Entwhistle came to Hogwarts the same year as Harry Potter. He arrived on scholarship, having been raised in a muggle group home, and was sorted into Ravenclaw. When Rufus Scrimgeour was murdered and our world was thrown into chaos, every one of us can say where we were. I was in my own flat, rushing to pack my things before my cover was blown and the Death Eaters came to punish me as a mole. Kevin Entwhistle was at the group home with his two best friends, muggles. He wouldn't have known to flee if not for a letter from Minerva McGonagall.
Those who were labeled undesirables spent the next few months hiding in abandoned houses and camping in forests across Europe. Entwhistle spent this time on the run with Weird Sisters' Donaghan Tremlett, learning to play guitar. The downfall of his nomadic company was joining up with another group. When they fused with another camp, they became too large and were found by snatchers. In the fight that ensued, Kevin Entwhistle, disarmed, made the mistake of punching a snatcher in the teeth. That snatcher was Fenrir Greyback and that little mistake turned Kevin into a Half Moon. Six muggleborns were captured in the attack. Theodore Tonks and Dirk Creswell were killed. Kevin and Tremlett escaped with Dean Thomas (a Battle of Hogwarts hero) and Abigail Scooner (who was later captured and killed).
Since the end of the war Kevin has worn a glove over his right fist. Being a rockstar, this hasn't been considered too eccentric. Kevin has been able to live a normal life. He even got married last year to Gryffindor classmate, Lavender Brown. How has life changed for him?
I got to sit down with Kevin to hear his story. Kevin decided to come out with this secret to help promote tolerance for Werewolves of all kinds, Half Moon and Full. With advancements such as the Wolfsbane Potion, Full Moon Werewolves have been able to live fairly normal lives, only losing a few days out of the month to curl up as tame animals during their transformations.
"I eat a lot of red meat, I'm a little more aggressive, and get... a little excited. That's pretty much the difference." Kevin explained that the full moon brings about a tendency to follow the baser instincts of man. Kevin, who has never been the kind of rocker to get into bar fights and never drinks, has pretty much stayed out of trouble. For the already hot-headed, the full moon requires extra willpower. Entwhistle and his wife refer to the full moon as his "Wolfy Time."
"I'm married now," he explained, "So if I eat a little steak and want to have sex, it's really not going to cause any problems."
Kevin brought up war heroes like Remus Lupin, mentor to The Boy Who Lived. Lupin died fighting against Death Eaters, alongside his Auror wife, Nymphadora Tonks Lupin, in the Battle of Hogwarts. Most of all, Kevin wanted to stress to the public that Werewolves are not monsters, they are victims.
