Sephiroth was napping when Hojo had come in looking far too pleased with himself.
Now, normally, he wouldn't have gotten away with just the lazy eye opening he did before shutting it again, but he did for two reasons. One, Hojo -was- pleased with himself. That tended to make him more relaxed about things, if not a bit more worried about one's health. And the second was Hojo had learned that trying to stop Sephiroth from taking naps randomly during the day was doomed to failure.
His own fault for using feline genetics, then.
"The upstart's projects have officially been considered failures. However, it is planned to bring them in as SOLDIERs if they can pass the testing."
Upstart? Oh, he was talking about that other scientist again. Hollander. Stretching, Sephiroth's brain finally processed the rest of that sentence.
Other projects?
His attention was noticed by Hojo, who smirked. "He used avian instead of lupine, and while it does work, it doesn't work as well. Fool. Besides, I'm sure that wasn't the only mistake that he made."
That wasn't the part Sephiroth cared about, and he looked at Hojo with narrowed eyes. Ignoring it for now, the man took advantage of his captive audience and continued to talk.
"You'll be moving soon. If the others will be joining soon, we need to have you firmly in place by then. You are already earmarked to lead the SOLDIER section, with the possibility of taking command over the rest of the military under one of the President's top men."
Sephiroth wondered what the rush was to have him placed in the command structure. Not that he minded. Anything to get out of the labs would be good. Even if there was a war going on.
"So, as soon as you return to normal, you will be taken to a camp outside of Midgar and joining the new troops there. You'll be sent through basic, then moved to the SOLDIER program. From there, if you show talent for it, you'll be put in a command position and sent to Wutai."
There was warning in that tone, and Sephiroth knew what it was over. Hojo had been preparing for this moment for a while, and Sephiroth had been taught as much as they could about leading people. If he failed at commanding, it would be back to the labs. And this time, there would be no chance for escape. The twelve year old did not like that concept at all, but he refrained from giving any his normal signs of agitation. He had to have better control over it than that.
Though he wondered how Hojo expected him to deal with men with his...condition.
Again, as if reading his thoughts, Hojo answered the unspoken question.
"You'll find, once you reach SOLDIER, that you are not the only one who has the ability to shift. While the Turks have long been changed to do it, the SOLDIERs have as well. They are like yourself. Feline based with lupine grafted in instead of the pure wolves that the Turks are."
This...was the first time Sephiroth had heard anything like that. That there were others like him.
Running a tongue over a silver-furred paw, he contemplated that.
There were others like him. Different from everyone else, but....
He wasn't alone. Not a experiment that was completely different from everything else in the world.
And with that, his world view shifted.
There were others.
Sephiroth would succeed at this, and he'd find his own kind.
The large, silver cat almost purred.
But not now. Hojo was still there, and he was still talking. So Sephiroth listened.
Nothing was going to get in his way of getting out of here.
