RP: Please Be Real
Who: Thad and Dagny
What: After messaging through the dating app, Thad and Dagny meet in person.
When: 30 July 2027
Where: The Drunken Zebra
Warnings: Cuteness overload
Completion Status: Complete

It wasn't often that Thad bothered to look at the dating app that he typically kept active all the time, having simply turned off the notifications for it. But yesterday, he'd had a whim and as he flipped through the profiles of the women who had matched him recently, he'd been completely drawn to hers.

Dagny P was absolutely gorgeous, no doubt about that, those sea-foam green eyes so full of depth that he'd stared at her picture for longer than he wanted to admit before matching back and sending her a message. And then they'd chatted on there for a bit, and he'd completely forgot that there were other matches to look through. But then, Thad could have one hell of a one-track-mind when he wanted to. It did him well on the pitch, certainly.

And he'd taken that adrenaline rush from good conversation with a beautiful woman onto the pitch today, predicting correctly that they would win. And what a win! They'd been neck and neck with the Kestrals for hours and then down twenty points when he finally caught the snitch. Some stretches and a quick shower after the game, and then he was off to the Drunken Zebra.

Dressed a little more sharply than he usually was in the hope that Dagny might actually show, Thad wandered through the bar, chatting casually with the regulars and some of his team while keeping an eye out for her. And then he spotted her, and he walked away from whomever he'd been talking to, making a beeline for her.

"Dagny, I presume?" he greeted her with a crooked grin. She was every bit as gorgeous in person as she'd been in her pictures. "I believe I promised you a drink."

Dagny's evening with the dating app had garnered mixed results. She had been less than inclined to carry on conversations with people who didn't appear to know basic punctuation and one guy had seemed okay until about the fifth message when he started asking for pictures which... no. Not going to happen.

But she'd kept coming back to That's messages. He'd seemed sweet and genuinely interested which was not at all what she'd expected when she'd reactivated her dating profile. She was fully prepared for this all to be someone's idea of a joke, but she'd checked with Isla and not only was the Drunken Zebra a real place but it was where the local Quidditch players hung out after matches.

And there he was. Dagny smiled widely, pushing a loose lock of hair behind her ear. She hadn't been sure what to wear to the pub, but eventually found a dress that was kind of casual but polished enough to make a good first impression. "You presume correctly. Thad? It's nice to meet you." So it turned out his profile pictures had been accurate. That was more than a pleasant surprise. "I would love a drink, thank you."

She really was lovely, and was it weird that Thad hoped her personality was just as lovely as her countenance? It wasn't as though he'd been a professional Quidditch star for long, but already the meaningless flings were boring him. Perhaps being on the team with Gavin was influencing him in the opposite direction.

Thad's grin was a bit crooked as he nodded his head toward the bar, intending to head that way with her. "What's your poison?" he asked, not wanting to be presumptuous and risk ordering her something she would hate. Plus, he'd always thought you could learn a lot about someone by their preferred drink.

Dagny followed after him, taking a chance to look around. She supposed that she shouldn't have been surprised that the pub was so busy and there were definitely a lot of people in Magpies colours milling around; it was a really nice vibe.

She peered behind the bar, trying to see what they had. "Do they do any mixed drinks?" Dagny liked a cocktail when she had the chance, but maybe this wasn't that kind of bar? Beer would be okay if they didn't. Normally she was good at making decisions but sometimes being in another country, even one she'd visited countless times, had her on the back foot. "What are you drinking?"

"They do the classics and a variety of custom mixed drinks. What do you typically like? Maybe I can use it to suggest one of their customs you might like," he offered. "I'll probably stick with scotch."

And he would take it slow, definitely not in the mood to get drunk. Besides, Thad thought, he was hoping to actually get to know this gorgeous woman who'd come out to meet him. Getting sloppy drunk on her wouldn't leave the best impression, he was sure.

"Something with vodka, maybe?" Dagny suggested, intrigued to see what Thad might order for her.

She leaned against the bar to better look at him as they waited. Merlin and Morrigan, he was handsome. Now that she was looking at him up close and personal Dagny had to revise her initial appraisal of his profile pictures being accurate to the photos not doing him justice. Maybe she was ogling a little, but who could blame her? There was no shame in appreciating

"So I may have been listening to the match on the wireless earlier," she admitted. "It sounded like you saved the day at the end."

"Vodka, hmm," Thad murmured, glancing away from her to look at the menu of custom drinks. The bartender caught his eye, and Thad nodded at her, waiting until she came over to put in their drinks order. "We'll have a scotch on the rocks and a witch's heart."

Drinks ordered, he glanced back at her with that goofy crooked grin, charmed at her words. "Did you now? It was a good game. Maybe you'd enjoy seeing one in person sometime? I know you said you aren't Quidditch-obsessed, but it can be a good time." It didn't even have to be one of his games. In fact, he was thinking more of going to a game with her. And how fucking weird was that? He hardly knew her, yet here he was, trying to come up with different ways to spend more time with her.

Dagny smiled at the name of the drink he ordered. She hadn't seen the menu, but by the name alone it sounded like something she would order for herself.

"Maybe," Dagny said in agreement, surprised with how pleased she was at the suggestion. Quidditch was hardly a staple feature in her life and she barely had enough knowledge about the game to keep up when the World Cup was on. "But I think I'd want to go with someone who knows how everything works." She laughed a little. "Otherwise I might end up cheering for the wrong team."

Thad paid for the drinks, passing the smoking purple drink to Dagny with a grin. It was a little bit sweet, a little bit tangy, the alcohol disguised enough to tame the burn of it. He could admit that he'd tried just about every custom drink the Drunken Zebra concocted. It was team tradition, after all.

"Hmm, I'll have to think about if I know anyone I could suggest," he mused jokingly, tapping the index finger of his free hand against his chin speculatively. And then he chuckled, dropping his hand and nodding away from the bar. "Want to grab a table? I'd like the chance to convince you to let me take you to a game sometime," he admitted, knowing that he lacked subtlety and running with it.

Dagny hadn't expected the drink to smoke and she was quickly learning not to underestimate the Drunken Zebra. Clearly catering for the Quidditch crowd meant this wasn't just some hole in the wall establishment.

"Yeah," said Dagny with teasing sarcasm, "I wonder if you can think of anyone. There must be someone out there who can teach the clueless American a thing or two." She took a quick sip of her drink with the aim of making it less likely that she would spill it as she walked; it was delicious and she made a small sound of approval. "Delicious. And I would love to give you that chance." After the horrible betrayal at the end of her last relationship, the lack of guile was endearing. "So that's drinks, an amusement park and a Quidditch match. I'll have to start coming up with some ideas of my own for dates."

She led the way to one of the only free tables. "So, I've gotta ask. How does a guy like you end up on a dating app?" Dagny grinned and pulled out a chair for Thad. "There's probably half a dozen witches giving me the evil eye right now," she added, only half-joking having noticed a couple of less-than-friendly stares as they chatted.

Thad chuckled at the sarcasm, thinking idly that of course he would be interested in a woman with quick-wit and a lack of simpering. "You didn't strike me as clueless. I'd bet there's a thing or two you could teach me," he suggested, waggling his eyebrows exaggeratedly at her, hoping for a laugh. "But I do approve of your coming up with date ideas too." And the implication that she was interested in multiple dates with him.

She surprised him by pulling a chair out for him, but he sat without comment, stretching his foot out under the table to nudge the other chair out for her. "There's other witches here?" he asked, feigning cluelessness and looking around briefly, blinking owlishly as though she'd just opened his eyes to it. A beat later, he chuckled and shrugged his shoulders, setting his glass on the table in front of him. "There's not a lot of fulfillment in trying to date groupies. Didn't really mind that before," he admitted, shrugging again. "But I think I'm ready for something more serious than that now." He'd be twenty-four in just a few months, and while that was still quite young by wizarding standards, he could admit that he wanted something like his parents had. Though knowing what Jules was up to might have influenced him, too.

Dagny laughed, her curious mind jumping to all sorts of ideas. "Good." He didn't look terrified at the idea of severa dates just minutes after meeting in person. In all honesty, she didn't know why she was suggesting that either, but she did know that Thad was kind of giving her excited butterflies.

She nodded as she listened. Just a few months ago, she'd thought that she'd had that serious sort of thing with someone but looking back she had been fooling herself. Secret on again-off again romances with someone a decade older than you weren't something to aspire to, but instead of hiding herself away she remained optimistic that there was something better out there. "Mutual trust and respect," Dagny remarked. "That's... that's what I'm looking for, you know? Someone who's my equal." She wouldn't let herself get sucked into another power imbalance.

The way she said that--it seemed like a hint of vulnerability, and he tilted his head slightly as he studied her a little closer, lifting his glass to take a sip of the scotch within. "I get that," he agreed. "I want something like my parents have--which I realize totally sounds like a line, but they're pretty good role models for that. They've got the mutual trust and respect thing down pat."

He'd never denied having the biggest soft spot for his family, though it wasn't something he usually talked about with the groupies. Hence the dating app and taking things more seriously now with Dagny.

Trying to shake off that unwanted moment of introspection, Dagny took a drink. The tangy sweetness of the drink brought her mostly back to the moment. “I put my trust in someone,” she admitted, though she wouldn’t tell him the whole story of the photos tonight. “And they didn’t just break that, trust, they smashed it to teeny tiny pieces.” Her lips curved into a self-deprecating smile. “Not that I’m some broken thing or anything like that. Now I know I deserve better.”

Okay, that was enough of that. Her foot nudged his a little nervously under the table. She could reflect on why she had confidence in telling him something like that so soon some other time. Right now she wanted to enjoy having drinks with a handsome, funny wizard who might have won her over by asking to read her work before they had even met.

“I get that,” she said. Her parents had a good relationship too, though she knew that a few generations before a Muggle like her dad might not have been accepted into the family. “I have some good role models too. I swear my Uncle Adrian still has hearts in his eyes every time he looks at his wife, even after all this time.”

That... definitely seemed to come from left field, but Thad listened to what she said with a focus that would make his dad proud. "I'm sorry--no one deserves to be treated that way." He didn't need to know the details and had no intention of asking, definitely not tonight.

Grinning, Thad nudged his foot back against hers. "That's sweet," he said, thinking about how his Uncle Ferrol sometimes had stars in his eyes when he would look at his partners, but somehow he didn't think bringing up his uncle's highly unconventional polygamous relationship was a smart idea on a first date.

"So you said you're staying with cousins?" he prompted, curious as to which family she was related and if he knew them. Adrian wasn't exactly an uncommon name, after all.

"Ugh, that was a lot, wasn't it? I'll be honest with you, I haven't dated anyone new for... a long while. I'm a little out of practice." She rolled her eyes, making light of an unexpectedly serious moment.

Dagny nodded, taking a sip of her drink. "Yeah, there's three of them." She wasn't related by blood to Liam and Isla, but they had never been any less her cousins. "My cousin Bash is our age. Uh, Sebastian Pucey? He's a Healer." And she was damn proud of him for it.

"Maybe a bit, but raw honesty is kind of refreshing," he responded with a small shrug. He couldn't say he was particularly practiced at actual dating, but he was willing to give it a go.

At her explanation of who her cousins were, Thad couldn't help letting out the soft bark of laughter, his eyes sparkling in fierce amusement. "Ahh, Bash. Not sure I know him--I only shared a dorm with the guy for seven years." Chuckling, he shook his head. "And you shouldn't believe a word he says about me if you ask," he joked. Really, he couldn't be sure what Bash might have to say about him, but he would hope it wouldn't all be bad or in the realm of warning her off him.

Dagny laughed. "Really?" She hadn't been expecting that. "Huh. I guess I forget that Hogwarts is smaller than Ilvermorny."

She leaned an elbow on the table, surveying Thad and giving him a teasing look. "See, now you've said that it makes me think there must be stories. And if there's one thing I love it's digging into stories." Dagny flashed him a bright smile. "Unless you were all little angels who never put a foot wrong?" Being the squeaky clean never had much appeal and Dagny had earned her fair share of detentions at school - funnily enough, usually for asking too many questions.

Thad chuckled again, bringing his glass up to his lips. "Hmm, maybe I like the idea of you poking into it, doing your research to see what you can dig up," he retorted. There weren't any skeletons in his closet that would destroy him, after all. Just normal teenage boy shenanigans.

"Just don't tell my mum," he added, though really, his mum probably already knew most of it. She always seemed to know.

“That does sound like an interesting challenge…” Dagny mused, gaze dropping to watch the last few curls of smoke on her drink dissipate. “But I think that might take all the fun out of getting to know you in person.” He was easy to talk to, she decided, not to mention easy on the eyes. Those other ideas for dates were still looking appealing.

“So.” She twisted the stem of her glass in her fingers. “What does a star Quidditch player usually do after a winning game? I haven’t stolen you away from team celebrations, have I?”

"Hmm, a woman who enjoys surprises?" he guessed, looking at her with one brow quirked, considering the possibilities. It was possible she didn't care for surprises, but he got the feeling she might. At least, she seemed rather adventurous, and he quite enjoyed that thought.

He couldn't help but wonder if that question was a trap. "Depends on the star," he hedged with a grin. "But it's never really like formal team celebrations. For us singles, there's usually drinking and flirting, maybe some dancing. Us Magpies like to keep things simple." He paused, his grin going a bit crooked. "Sometimes."

"I guess," Dagny said, considering. She definitely didn't hate surprises. "I like to find out the 'how' and the 'why', but I guess the journey of finding things out can be pretty satisfying." Knowing everything all at once would be like reading the last chapter of a mystery novel first - if you knew whodunnit, what was the point of reading the rest?

"Okay, good." She was relieved that she wasn't stepping on any traditions. "I've known more than a few Quodpot players who were kinda attached to rituals before and after games. I don't want to be the cause of any bad luck." Dagny smirked a little. "Just so you know, I think the drinking and flirting is going well so far."

Thad nodded, thinking that made a lot of sense. Especially knowing she was a writer. "Here's to hoping the journey doesn't disappoint," he quipped, lifting his glass in a mock toast before taking another sip from it.

"Quodpot? Ahh, Americans," he teased, shaking his head with a joking tut. He would never understand why the Americans always had to spurn the worldwide popular support in lieu of having their own special sport. "But honestly, I don't think you could ever be bad luck." With a smile like that? He already could feel the Finals cup in his hands.

"Has there been flirting?" he asked, feigning surprise before his lips stretched in a winning smile. "So, does that mean you're up for exploring those vintage fairground rides with me after all?"

"Hear hear." Dagny raised her glass too, happy to join the mock toast. Those excited butterflies didn't seem to be going anywhere soon, she thought as she finished her drink.

She rolled her eyes, partly from the sports quip and partly from the lucky comment which was adorably corny. {Just because it wasn't popular over here that didn't mean it wasn't enjoyed elsewhere; the Quodpot teams at Ilvermorny had always drawn much bigger crowds.)

Dagny nodded, cheeks perhaps a little flushed. "I'd love to. As long as you're still interested, too." Which she supposed he must be if he was asking.

"Oh, hmm, let me think," he said, bringing his index finger up to tap his chin, his eyes peeking up toward the ceiling as though in deep thought for a brief moment. "Gorgeous, check. Intelligent, check. Sense of humor, check. More to be discovered? Check. Yeah, I'd say I'm still interested."

From her strangely serious moment early on tonight to the way she'd seemed to respond to him honestly, he was absolutely convinced that she wasn't some vapid groupie and that she was someone he would greatly enjoy getting to know better. It didn't hurt that he rather thought his family wouldn't be put off by her, though he wasn't in any rush to find out for sure.

Okay, she was definitely blushing now. "I could tick off the same attributes for you," she assured him, beaming. "I'm so glad I reactivated my dating profile."

She touched her empty glass. "How about I get us another round of drinks?" she suggested. He'd bought the first ones, so that seemed only fair to her. "And maybe later this might be one of those nights where there's dancing as well?"

"That's good to hear," he said with a smirk. He could admit that he'd heard more than once that he was a boring meathead, and it might have been a persona he embraced at the start of his Quidditch career to keep anyone from trying to get too close when he didn't want anything serious. Now that he was interested in something more, he was glad he apparently still had it. "I'm glad you reactivated it too."

At her suggestion, Thad glanced down at his own drink. It wasn't empty but close enough. "Sure." While his dad might give him some side eye for letting the lady buy a round for him, his mum would certainly set her husband straight. He would happily keep paying for their drinks, but he didn't mind the equality. "I think dancing can certainly be arranged," he agreed easily.

He didn't balk at a woman wanting to pay for something which was another plus for Dagny. In the past, she'd been on dates where men had tried to imply that she owed them something and she didn't want to ever go down that route.

"Great." Dagny pushed back her chair enough to stand. "I'll be right back."
