There was a bit of an art to having an unfocussed gaze but also paying enough attention to not be thoroughly startled. It was a good thing to develop when you had a wandering mind but also a host of siblings with varying levels of vindictiveness built into their revenge strategies. Caleb had developed it pretty early. It meant he'd heard and half-seen Beau coming, although he couldn't have been sure who it was until he spoke and Caleb himself looked up.
"Hi, Beau," he said, giving him a smile. He half expected to also see his brother despite only noticing one person approaching. His mind had semi-grouped them together, despite knowing they had independent lives and jobs beyond their relationship. "Thanks. I've been enjoying weirder looking flora recently." He wasn't sure if Beau had meant his shirt or his book, since both had a bit of a mushroom theme going on.
He blinked and came back to himself more, straightening up slightly. "What brings you to ...?" he waved to encompass the street, the shop, and the general vicinity, unsure which was Beau's specific target.
