Father's day was one of Juliet's favorite days of the year, perhaps because her dad was one of her absolute favorite people in the world, and she loved any chance to celebrate him and the impact he'd made (and continued to make!) in her life. She had fond memories of Peter teaching them how to cook brunch, because it was one of the few days of the year dad wasn't allowed to work in the kitchen and it wasn't as though mum would be any help there. So many of her memories of her childhood had that layer of warmth, of belonging, of family.

Today was no different in that respect, but it was different because it was the first time they had significant others over for the celebration. Peter and Addison, Thad and Dagny, and she'd even asked Raziel if he would join them for a little bit, though she knew he would have his own family things to get to later in the day. She could practically see the pride and excitement in her parents eyes, how thrilled they were to see the family expanding. It made it easy to put her own issues with her biological family in a box for the day. There was no room for any of that in the pure joy of the day.

After brunch, she'd sat with Violet on the back deck for a little bit, watching as the family scattered for smaller conversations or activities. After her sister wandered off, she got up and walked down into the yard, spotting Dagny sitting in an oversized lounge chair under the gazebo. Sitting down in the opposite chair after she'd poured herself a glass of juice from the jug on the table, she turned to Dagny with a warm smile.

"I'm really glad you came today!" she told her honestly. She had a Feeling that Dagny was going to be the first of the significant others to become an official member of the family, but she was planning to keep that thought to herself.

As an only child, Dagny wasn’t accustomed to big celebrations for days like today. They still marked the occasion, though, and it tended to be one of the days where they toned down their use of magic since Will Connelly wasn’t magical. As a kid, that had been its own kind of fun.

When Jules joined her, Dagny’s phone was in her hand. There was a five hour time difference, so she’d had to wait until it was a reasonable time in St Thomas before she could make a video call home. The gazebo had been a nice, quiet spot to talk in private and she had just finished up. “Me too,” Dagny agree, returning Juliet’s warm smile.

She put her phone down, a pang of homesickness lingering somewhere behind her ribs. Her parents had been outside eating breakfast and there was just something about the colour of the sky that had made her miss the place she’d grown up. It would fade quickly, Dagny knew, and she was a little embarrassed for getting a little emotional. Knowing that Jules could likely pick up on that, Dagny was keen to steer the conversation elsewhere.

“I have to say, the four of you working together in the kitchen is pretty impressive. I don’t think my cousins could ever manage that.” A chef and two potioneers was almost too much specialist knowledge in one place.
