It was a testament to how utterly distracted he'd been that Wes hadn't registered the presence inside his wards upon returning home. He did, however, hear Kenzie pad out onto the deck, and he was so attuned to her that he knew it was her by the way she walked. He kept his eyes closed, his face turned toward the sun that was still low in the sky. There was a slight chill in the air still, but it didn't bother him.
"I never mind you being here. I wouldn't have given you a room if I did," he reminded her with a thread of amusement. It wasn't the first time he'd reminded her, and he doubted it would be the last.
Wes finally turned his head toward her, and he stretched out a hand, inviting her closer so that he could tug her onto his lap.
