Zahara and Hyperion had sent out invitations to their children to meet them at the house for brunch and tree trimming. There was a variety of breakfast foods all around, mostly pastries. There were also the fixings to make mimosas. Some of Zahara’s favorite champagne and fresh squeezed orange juice. The tree sat in the center of it all in their large living room, the wrap around couch facing the massive tree the couple had bought. There were boxes of ornaments all around, bowls filled with dried orange slices, cranberries, popcorn, and various strings so that they could make their own garland for the tree. She had tried to think of everything, excited to start new family traditions.
She had decorated the rest of the home the day before, garland hanging from banisters, lights strung up through the house. There was even mistletoe to be found in no less than 5 doorways throughout the home. Christmas had definitely arrived at the Montgomery-Knottingley home.
They had waited until all of the kids had arrived to get out the ornaments to decorate the tree. Zahara was enjoying watching the kids as they hung ornaments that were special to both families. There was a little ornament tucked away in the expanding pocket inside her dress. She waited at least twenty minutes into the tree trimming to take the bean shaped sonogram ornament out of her pocket. “We picked up a new ornament last week, we’ve been excited to share this with you,” she said, while she hung the ornament up on the tree. She was a ball of anxiety as she turned her eyes to the kids, sweeping to Jasper first. She worried about her son, he had taken their engagement the hardest. She was worried he’d take this harder.
Slender hands came to rest in front of her small bump, twisting her wedding band nervously. “We wanted to tell all of you before we told anyone else. We’re going to be adding an addition to the family. We’re expecting a little bean in June,” she explained with her vibrant smile. “We’re so excited to share this with all of you, to join our blended family. I know this is a lot to take in, but we were hoping to celebrate with all of you today,” she said, stopping for a breath. She wanted to let the kids have a chance to speak, as well as her new husband. Speaking of, she leaned back into his arms. Hyperion had stood to join her, his arm around her shoulders, beaming like the proud papa he was.
