At that brush of his fingers against her elbow and after he spoke, she blurted out, "My mum died six months ago," softly, and then cringed. "Sorry, not really party talk. I swear I'm usually way better at this." And she had been. Before her mum had died, she'd been so cheerful and lively. Now she couldn't imagine all the wonderful things that she could experience in her life that she wouldn't be able to share with her mum.
"Oh, it wasn't a real date anyway," she admitted, waving a hand negligently and wrinkling her nose. She shifted toward the table then, looking at the tray he'd lifted up. "Ooh, those do look tasty," she agreed, reaching out to pluck one off the tray and take a bite of it. "Mmm, oh yes, very good," she murmured, lifting her free hand to cover her mouth as she spoke.
