If there was one emotion in which Ginny struggled to process, it was shame. She was a proud, headstrong woman who stood by her decisions with a level of stubbornness one really ought to expect from a Weasley. But learning to admit when she's wrong, even if just to herself, had been a hard-learned lesson in her life. And the holidays were quite literally right around the corner, and she wanted to spend them with her family, damn it! She'd not maintained near enough contact with her youngest since Lily had (wrongly!) decided to join the Aurors, but that needed to change.

And so, she assumed that as the parent, she would have to take the first step to mend things between them.

As a woman who had also had a bit of a tumultuous relationship with her own mother, she could understand, perhaps, some of the feelings Lily was dealing with. And so, she'd decided to drop in on her daughter unannounced. It was the Weasley way, after all. Taking a breath to give herself a moment to organize her thoughts, she then rapped her knuckles three times on the door. Privacy was a valuable thing, after all, so it wasn't as though she was going to floo or apparate directly inside. She was a bit controlling at times, but she wasn't a monster.

It had been nearly two months since she had drinks at Molly's flat and with work and her own check ups on family she had barely had any time to actually unpack. The small one bedroom wasn't in shambles or stacked like Burrow but she needed to unpack.

She waved her wand floating a loose blanket over the stacked boxes in the corner when she heard someone tapping at her door. "Be there in a minute." She thought it might have been Albus taking a break from his home improvement visit.

She tried her best to clear her mind as she opened the door to welcome her unexpected visitor. As she pushed the door open she noticed long strands of fiery red hair like her own. "Mom?" The word fell out of her mouth as the door tapped gently against the wall.

Ginny could--would--be patient with her youngest, she told herself rather sternly. Her issues didn't have to be her daughter's issues. She adjusted her blouse, not quite anxiously, but certainly not relaxed either, and when she heard Lily opening the door, she let out a soft breath.

"Hello, Lily. I'm sorry to pop in unexpectedly, but I was hoping you might have a bit of time for me today?" She was sure Lily's training schedule was quite busy and didn't necessarily want to take up a significant amount of her off-time, but it felt important to clear the air.

It still took Lily a moment to register that Ginny, her mother was standing outside her flat. She thought back to the boxes she had just placed a blanket over. "Sure." Lily blurted out making a mental checklist of where things were in the apartment. She moved out of the doorway and flicked her wand a box close to the kitchen. "Coffee or tea?" A teapot flew from the box and under the faucet as Lily flourished turning on the stove where the teapot rest on a burner. "I've barely had time to unpack. Sorry for the mess."

Once Lily gave her permission, Ginny let herself in, glancing around with the faintest of sighs. While hardly an obsessively tidy sort, this was worse than she thought a busy schedule should justify. "Coffee," she answered, sighing again and shaking her head. She definitely wasn't here to nitpick her daughter's not having been fully unpacked and organized yet.

"I understand, Lil. How has training been going?" She would have to take a discrete peek around and see what furniture Lily might need. Maybe Lily would have time to go shopping sometime soon--they could have fun with that, she thought.

"Williamson keeps us on our toes." Lily poured the water into her french press, a frivolous little device but the coffee was delicious. She decided against sharing that she wanted to be in the field more than anything. "He's finally moved us on to protection spells and when to use them instead of stunning spells or jinxes."

She slid a full mug over to her mother and placed sugar cubes and cream between them. "If I remember correctly, your Bat-Bogey Hex is still one of the nastiest."

It was an attempt to get her mother to talk about spell work and regardless of her thoughts on Molly's chosen path, it was a proclivity they both shared.

"Rightfully so," Ginny commented, her lips twitching in amusement. If Lily really was serious about this career path, then Ginny wanted her as prepared as she could possibly be. And that meant hard, sometimes harsh, training. She would probably always worry on some level, but Lily was definitely her and Harry's daughter, and would, hopefully, take pride in holding her own in the field when she ended up there.

"I should hope so," she retorted with a laugh. "I mastered that one young. Had to with six older brothers. But you've heard that story lots of times." She sighed contentedly, thinking back on some of her best hexes. "Have you got a favorite hex yet?" she asked curiously as she doctored her coffee.

Lily thought for a moment. "Williamson's been teaching us some more defensive hexes I think my favorite one is the Stickfast Hex at the moment. The last time I dueled one of the other trainees, he about fell over without realizing it." Lily laughed it was nice to hear her mother asking questions about her work regardless of her feelings.

"Ooh, that's a good one!" she said approvingly. She evaluated her daughter for a long moment, and then smirked slowly. "We should spar sometime," she suggested. "Your ol' mum still knows a thing or two," she added with a hint of teasing.

It was interesting to see her mother like this as Lily broke into a smile, "I'd like that." She can't remember the last time she had dueled with her family. Not that it was life and death, they had just been...scattered.

Lily stirred a sugar cube into her coffee watching it dissolve, "So why the sudden drop in?" The question had been clawing at her since she had opened the door but they had been having friendly conversation. Now that their hands were occupied it seemed prudent to talk about what her mother might have wanted to.

It felt really good to see her daughter brighten like that. It felt like it had been ages since Lily had smiled at her, and that hurt, even if she knew her own behavior and reactions to things were the reason for it. "Great. Let me know when you've got the time off for it, and I'll make time for you."

Oh yes, Lily was definitely a Weasley-Potter. The moment made her smile warmly as she lifted her mug to her lips to take a sip. "I just wanted to check in on you. I know things have been a bit off for a while, and I'd love for it to not be so anymore," she answered honestly.

Lily's smiled faded slightly. "It's been a lot recently. The training, I mean." Lily flicked her wand as the blanket covering a neat but large stack of boxes hidden in the corner. "I still haven't finished unpacking." It felt cathartic speaking to her mother. "I've just been summoning what I need and letting the rest of it sit. I really don't want to use magic to fill in the cabinets because I might not remember where everything is."

Lily felt her check go warm. They were probably the shade of her hair by this point.

"I'm sure it has, Lilybug," Ginny said, falling back rather automatically on the nickname she'd used for her daughter throughout her childhood.

"There's no shame in taking a bit longer to unpack, sweetheart. Training is grueling, and rightfully so, so if it takes you six months to be fully unpacked and organized, how terrible is that really? This is your space, and you should make it as comfortable as you need with whatever time and energy you can spare toward it," she offered, hoping to cool that flush in Lily's cheeks.

Lily returned her mother's smile with one of her own. She forgot her tendencies to keep herself wrapped up in her head as she tried to tackle a to-do list as long as her arm. "Thanks, mom." It had been so long since they had spoken that she forgot how calming a talk with her could be. Lily took a breath, "Any plans for the holidays? I had wrote to dad on whether or not to visit him at the Castle." Her parents were separated but that wasn't cause to never mention one to the other. She remembered that it was rather amicable, the split.

Ahh and if that wasn't the perfect opening. "Well, to be honest love, I was thinking it would be nice for all of us to spend Christmas together. Just because your father and I are separated doesn't mean we've stopped being family," she reassured her daughter with a small smile. She couldn't say that it wouldn't be a bit odd, spending the holiday with Harry after he'd left her, but it felt important. She didn't hold any ill will toward him, after all.

Lily paused for a moment searching her mothers face. She wasn't one for slights but she knew better than her siblings that Ginny's mind was always was moving whether behind a smile or a placid face. "I'd like that. Maybe a little dueling in the yard, and perhaps flying?" Lily knew her mother was a good flyer and most likely better than Harry but to see it in action when she could actually remember would be something.

"That sounds lovely," Ginny replied agreeably. And if Lily said something to Harry also, then there was no way he wouldn't come. It would be a good thing for them to still do family things together.
