He'd known something had to be up, of course. James wasn't stupid at all. But he had made the apparently wrong assumption that this was just announcing, oh, perhaps a more formal version of the open relationship his mother had been having with Blaise Zabini.
What he had not expected was for his mother to announce that she was pregnant.
Wow. Just. Wow. He stared at her quite blankly for a moment, trying to process the entire concept. He wasn't angry or anything. More like gobsmacked.
Then he turned and stared just as blankly at Lily when she spoke, because that was also not how he would have pegged her to react. Lily was always the loud, super emotional one. She was the one who fought most often. That she was just blithely accepted it was a shock to him.
"Wow," he managed to say finally. "I can't say as I expected this, mum. But so long as you're happy. It's just so bleeding weird." He ran a hand back through his hair, turning it into a bit of a crazy mess - not an unusual look on him. "But like Lils said, anything to help, of course. You know how much I like kids." And how much he'd tried to help with his siblings. Though this one would be young enough to be his own child! Now that was a kicker. He shook his head again, trying to shake of this utterly weird feeling.
