Who: Jane, Hadie, and Harriet
What: Hadie and Harriet lightly torment Jane
When: yesterday
Where: prison
Warnings: None
This place was beyond awful. Jane clutched to the bundle of fabric to her chest as she hurried quickly down the hallway of the prison. Why did she have to be in this place? Ben was here and so was Mal, but things were strange between those two. Evie wasn’t around anymore and, well, Jane felt like a fairy that had been knocked straight out of her story. She rounded a corner and nearly collided with someone, but thankfully she managed to stop in time. A faint sound of surprise escaped her. “Oh! Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.” She glanced up at the girl she had nearly collided with and that was when she realized she may have walked straight into a shark. Jane’s face paled slightly as she tried to smile. Tried. “Harriet, right? H-how are you today?” Her gaze shifted to the boy standing behind the pirate and she felt a faint chill run down her back. Hadie grin wickedly as he looked between Jane and Harriet. “Well, I thought this little run in would have happened sooner. So tell me,” he leaned against the wall with an amused look on his face. “Are you enjoying slumming it?” There was a chance he might have to play conflict mediator, but until then he was content to stand back and watch the fireworks. Harriet had been talking to Hadie about nothing in particular, which had been, of all things, nice. It was good to just chat and banter with someone who understood her, without the heavy intensity that had been laid all over the prison for weeks. When they were interrupted. By her. The pirate rolled her eyes, her lips turned up in a faint sneer for a moment before it became a smile. But there was nothing friendly about it. More like a shark’s smile. “That’s right, Harriet. Harriet Hook.” Because they hadn’t actually been introduced. Harriet had been trying to avoid snarling her way into any conflicts, hence why she hadn’t spoken again to Ben, or commented to Jay. It was just easier that way. “Living the dream,” she shrugged. “People might complain, but this food is so much better than what I’m used to. I’ve had actual sugar. But sickly for my tastes, but I guess that’s how the palette gets trained.” Especially when one had been forced to eat nothing but scraps their whole life. “Must be a strange little thing for you, being down here with the filth instead of in your pretty little castles.” She had known there were VKs in the prison, VKs that weren’t Jay and Mal, but knowing and experiencing were two very different things. Jane made a faint noise in the back of her throat as she clutched the fabric to her chest tighter. “Hook? Oh. OH! You are related to CJ.” CJ and Harry, but she didn’t want to talk about Harry. That pirate terrified her. Well, okay, Harriet kind of did too, as did the guy standing next to her. A faint whistle escaped between Hadie’s lips as he tried not to laugh. “Easy,” he said to no one in particular. The young prince of the Underworld flashed his pearly white teeth at Jane and couldn’t help rolling his eyes as the girl eeped again. “I also found the sugar a bit much for my taste, but I tend to like the fiery foods.” He held up a finger and let some Hellfire appear. Okay, he knew he should have been playing nice, but it was kind of fun to see just how pale Jane could get. Sometimes he gave into his villain side. It was like watching a timid squeaking mouse. The kid wasn’t actually in any real danger from the villain pair, they weren’t monsters. But she didn’t seem to know that and it was amusing Harriet to see how scared she was. “That’s right, I’m her sister. CJ and Harry’s sister.” Dropping in that reminder that the Hook brother, the one who had clearly made an impact on the Auradon kids, was one of hers too. “They’re the nice ones of the family.” As Hadie revealed the flame, Harriet leaned over so the palm of her hand was close to it, not enough to burn but definitely closer than most would have dared. But Harriet knew Hadie had complete control over his power now that he was free from that prison Jane’s mother had forced them into. “So where are you going?” “They are the nice ones?” Her gaze was fully on the flame as she spoke. Jane was entranced and terrified at the same time. Blue was one of her favorite colors, but the fact it was in the form of fire? That wasn’t so good. “Oh, bippity boppity. Um, I was just going back to my room so I could try to make some more clothes?” Hadie cast a look at Harriet before letting the flame vanish after a moment. He had noticed the way Jane was staring at the magic. Was the girl afraid of the stuff? She was from Auradon where magic wasn’t under lock and key. Though, now that Hadie thought about it, he had heard rumors they had pretty much banned magic. “Was that a question or a statement? Yen Sid always said some confidence goes a long way. Commit, Jane.” Jane blinked slightly and gave a nervous laugh. “Right. Confidence. I’m sorry, I don’t think I know who you are. I mean I don’t actually know a lot of people here. I should just…” She debated turning and running, but settled on just hugging the fabric as tight as possible. Harriet rolled her eyes, really, was this girl for real? Was she scared by every tiny thing? The pirate had no idea how she was going to survive in a world full of zombies. Auradon did seem to make them sheltered. “Him?” She gestured her head towards her companion. “This is Hadie, prince of the underworld, son of Hades.” It wasn’t as though he ever hid who he was, plus all Jane would have to do was ask someone like Mal anyway. “We don’t actually bite, you know.” Though when Harriet smiled she did show all her teeth. “Most of the time.” Hadie flourished an expert bow before winking at Jane. The girl was going to die of fright at the rate she was going. It was kind of sad and he felt just a bit bad for toying with her earlier. “Friend of everyone. If people give you problems, besides Harriet of course, then let me know.” Jane was caught between wanting to run in terror and trying to actually be nice. Mother did always say a person had to be kind. There was no reason to just freak out because two VKs were talking to her. An actual giggle escaped her at Hadie’s remark. “Thank you, I think. I mean no one has bothered me yet.” She glanced down at the fabric in her arms before back at the two VKs in front of her. “Do you, um, maybe want some warmer clothes too? I was going to try and make a hoodie and I could try to make you some, but I’m not Evie and sometimes when I try to create things I don’t always get the results I expected, but I don’t know why I am rambling so much…” “Cause you are nervous. I’m guessing the kids in Auradon don’t dress or act like us. Relax, Janey.” Oh, now Hadie was being nice. Harriet turned to him and pulled a face for a moment, though not where Jane could see it. It wasn’t fun when it was just her being mean. Though she never did quite have the need for mean that some of the other villain kids did. Sure, she had a cruel streak, but petty meanness wasn’t all that interesting to her. For a moment she felt a flare of offense at Jane’s offer, glancing down at her own clothes. Some of it was from this place, but her boots and leather pirates coat was from home. Battered and repaired, it showed someone who had never had much so was forced to make those things last. But she supposed Jane was just being nice or something, in that sickening sort of way. “Cold doesn’t bother me,” Harriet shrugged. “I don’t need anything warmer.” At least her tone wasn’t actually hostile, just calmly matter of fact about it. Hadie grinned wickedly at Harriet and shrugged slightly. He had always walked a thin line so was it really so surprising he was playing nice? Besides, well, he felt bad for Jane. She may have been close to their age, but she seemed like she was a terrified toddler. “Oh, okay. Um, if you want something just let me know.” Jane honestly didn’t know what else to say. She flashed them a panicked smile before finally speed walking past them. There was only a little pause in her step as she heard Hadie start laughing. She squared her shoulders and kept her gaze straight a head as she tried not to let her heart pop out of her mouth. The young demi-god laughed harder and leaned against Harriet for a moment. “By Evil, she is like a freaking baby bird. Timid and flighty.” He reined himself in quickly and the calm mask was back on his face. “Auradon kids. I just don’t get it.” |
