Who: Gambit; open.
When: Friday, August 31st, 2007 (sunset)
Where: Xavier's; basketball court.
What: Shootin' hoops.
Status: in progress
Rating:  PG

Thirty didn't feel so old. In fact, Remy felt more energized and at peace at thirty (and at Xavier's) than he had all through his twenties. It was a nice change of pace. Les marmots (or 'students') weren't so bad. Sleeping all day when they were awake seemed to aid in their appeal. They'd since been called to dinner, and were most likely preparing for the start of class. More and more were arriving each day, he'd noticed. With the end of summer came the beginning of the academic year. Gambit was hard-pressed to keep his own studies as quieted as possible. Most of the staff who stayed on over the break had helped him catch up on some of his long-missed school work. But these... students, he did not need them in his business, or knowing for a fact that they had a leg up on him where books were concerned. Gambit liked having the upper hand.

This was one of the reasons he was practicing his free shot. With all of these les grands gars, it was hard for an average Joe to catch a break when it came to sports. He was anticipating the season of autumn simply for the mention of epic football battles. It was around the corner, but had not yet arrived. The summer was still swelling the air with humidity and heat, and Remy couldn't have been happier about it. He'd long since shed his shirt and was soaking in as many rays as he could before sundown. Swoosh! All net. Bon.

Much to LeBeau's surprise, he hadn't been visited or called to a task. It wasn't often one was alone at Xavier's School. At the moment, that fact was a pity. He was on his A game. Swoosh!

As he headed after the ball, he smirked and his black and red eyes gazed out over the lawn and back into the trees where the sun was disappearing. Trouble would find him soon; things were going too well.

les marmots = brats
les grands gars = big guys
bon = good

Summer was Shiro's favorite season mainly because he loved the sun. He couldn't get enough of it. It was like whenever he got in contact with the sun's raise, he was instantly energized. It was like the equivalent of a cup of coffee for most people. Or several. On this particular day, the mutant more commonly known as Sunfire, decided to go for a walk. It was almost autumn and he would not have this benefit soon enough.

Like Remy, Shiro stayed behind for the summer. It gave him extra time to get his High School work out of the way. Only a year left. He missed two years of High School because he had run away when his powers emerged. Now that he reconciled with his father who had been constantly on business and to a degree his sister, he had to get his life on track again. Time to forget the years he spent as a dog to the Yakuza. The people he murdered because he owed a debt to them. He hadn't spoken to anyone about that although he had a feeling his father knew and his sister is smarter that he gives her credit for. It was a life he preferred not to think about.

Not that he liked Xavier's School so much. It was okay but he often found people around him were too idealistic. Humans will seek to hurt those they find different than themselves or they use it up until there is nothing left. He also disliked the lack of freedom at the Institute. Sometimes, he just wanted to leave but a promise he gave his father caused him to stay.

Approaching the mansion, Shiro pondered if he wanted to go back inside or not. He was at the basketball court at this time and didn't want to go inside just yet. Instead, he took out a cigarette and lit it up and took a long drag. Hearing the dribbling of a ball, he looked over and saw Remy shooting hoops. He offered a friendly smile in greeting.

Ah-ah-ah. The cocky one. Gambit's dark eyes had watched the Japanese boy's approach. He had a mouth (and apparently the ability to back it up). That was boring. Remy's chin raised in a discreet jerk, then lowered once again - eyes now filled with determination - as he took his shot. The ball twirled around the rim until it fell down through the net. Go figure. He jogged after it. A smell wafted his way. Fuck. The Cajun had had enough fresh air and exercise.

After locking eyes with Shiro, his fingers made the pantomime of flicking a cigarette to knock the excess ash off the light. "You gotta spare?" He tucked the ball under his arm and against his bare side and headed for the edge of the court. The other fellow looked a bit broodish - which was saying something when Mr. LeBeau was also in the picture. Thousand-mile stare. "Somethin' on your mind, homme?"

As long as no one wanted to take away his smokes for good, like Leyu kept on trying to do. But his addiction was such that he kept on buying more and even hid some so when Leyu went through one of her, 'must help niichan's health' moods, he can have one. He eyed the Cajun as he tried to interpreted his gesture. Finally, he took one out of the pack and handed it to Gambit. The Japanese mutant looked a bit confused at Remy's accent. It was hard to interpret.

At the question, Shiro stared back at him as he tried to sift through the accent, "Excuse me?" He said. He thought he understood the basics of it but he wasn't entirely sure. Shiro knew a little French from the time he spent in Geneva with his father. He also was fluent in English. But this was a combination and thus he was a little lost.

Not out of the usual. Sometimes his Frenglish got him out of trouble - sometimes it caused him problems. And sometimes, it was simply hard to comprehend. Gambit raised his finger to the tip of the cigarette and waited a moment until it went pink, then he backed off. It turned red and began to go to ash. He took in a long drag and then smirked a little as he drew the butt away from his lips. "Penny for your thoughts." He tried again. "T'anks, by the way," his free hand held the cigarette upwards and he gave a universal nod for 'thank you', just to be safe.

"You look like you havin' a talk wit' yourself."

Shiro noted his little trick and smirked. It was like him concentrating plasma to light his cigarette. Sunfire got the Penny for your thoughts and found the expression confusing, "I am unfamiliar with that... expression..." he stated. Well, isn't this wonderful. Both speak different forms of English and English isn't even Shiro's first language. He narrowed his eyes and finally nodded. "You're welcome."

On the last comment, Shiro looked even more confused. He got talk and yourself, "I wasn't talking to myself. Just one good walk before summer ends. Pondering the... ano... beauty of the fleetingness of summer?" He wondered where Gambit was from, "Where are you from?" Shiro was rather blunt, something that got him irritated looks in his country of origin.

It was a beautiful (and warm) day outside. Dani had no intentions on wasting it as she spent her time indoors. It had gotten late on her, but there was still time to enjoy it. After she'd finished grading that days papers, she changed into a black tank top and a pair of jean shorts. The 'teacher' garb she wore could be so constricting sometimes. Maybe she'd take a walk in the woods. When she stepped outside, she heard the accents of two of the 'newer' members of Xavier's 'family'. "Hey, you two," she greeted with a smile. Her eyes flicked from one to the other briefly as she made her way towards them. Shiro had obviously not been playing ball with Remy (she noticed the basketball and Gambit was sweaty and shirtless). "Did you win?" she asked the Cajun with a smirk.

"I rarely lose, chere," the female was too great a distraction for Gambit too ignore. He gave her a wink, which cause the sweat that had been upon his eyelid to stream down his cheekbone and through his stubble to his neck. His eyes traveled (slowly) back to the Asian he'd been speaking to beforehand, then. "Gambit? From N'awlins," hm, "Louisiana, y'know?" He pointed down, meaning 'the South'. "You a, uh," he couldn't resist, "Chinaman?" Remy wasn't ignorant, but he couldn't help but feeling like ribbing the boy a bit. He could take it, eh?

Feeling a part of two very different conversations, the Cajun gestured for Miss Moonstar (oh yes, he knew her name well) to join them. "We won' bite, 'less you ask, petite."

"It's easy to win when you play by yourself," Shiro remarked as he gave a long drag from his cigarette. He, too, checked Dani out but in a more subtle way from Remy. He found Gambit's method's of flirting way too upfront to a degree. As his former conversation continued, he leaned a bit as if trying to pick through the accent what he was saying. "Louisiana?" He asked as he tried to see if he heard that right. He knew roughly where that was. He didn't know much about it. The states all ran together for him but he suspected that Americans didn't know the Japanese prefectures!

His expression changed quickly when Remy asked if he was from China. It seemed he almost got a vague glowy aura for a moment from anger before it quickly subsided, "I'm from Japan..." he said with a slight growl. He was most certainly NOT Chinese!

Gambit's response caused Dani to grin at him, but the grin faltered when Shiro spoke. Hmm. Getting checked out by both men and snarked at by the Japanese man wasn't really Dani's cup of tea (at least the snarkiness wasn't). Shiro didn't seem to have a very good sense of humor. But then again, it might have been difficult at times to understand all of the expressions (and smart-ass comments) that were often tossed around freely. Or because Gambit was a charmer. When Remy invited her into the conversation, she stepped closer to them offering another smile to Gambit. "I might ask." she gave the Cajun a wink, then switched her gaze to Shiro, "It's all right, Shiro. I've been mistaken for a Mexican before. Some woman yelled at me in Spanish." she smiled here, hoping he would loosen up. "You want to play?" she asked Gambit, gesturing to the basketball court. She'd wanted some exercise today, may as well be a ball game with an attractive Cajun man.

It wasn't often Gambit played anything alone. But he didn't feel the need to clear up that fact. Not at the moment. "Mmhmm," he nodded to Shiro's pronunciation. Hell, it was better than most Americans' attempts. Miss Moonstar was full of piss and vinegar, he was happy to see. When she returned his wink, his smirk widened, but it fell when Shiro responded to the question of his homeland.

"My bad, mon ami. Don' take it personally." Remy lowered the cigarette from his lips and listened as Dani spoke (rather wisely). There were so many nations and colors in the world, it was a sorry man who took himself and his pride so seriously that he got upset by a silly mistake. Other people were ignorant, that was that. Gambit himself hadn't known any better. And Shiro hadn't understood where he was from, either. But it didn't look like the hot-blooded Japanese fella planned to boil over Gambit's error.

"One-on-one, chere? I could go up an' down dat court with you all day." He tossed her the ball, with very little challenge. He was in the mood to relax, but there was no need to pass on an opportunity to engage in sport with a spunky beauty. Or other things, for that matter.

Shiro didn't mean for his comment to be snarky then again, he rarely tried to come off as snarky. It just sort of happened. What he needed was someone to really kick him down a notch. He had a lot of personal pride and pride for his country. So this is why he seemed to not have much of a sense of humor. His humor lied in irony but he didn't take to kindly to "cheap shots". Of course that is subjective. It seemed he was the wet blanket of this conversation.

Shiro just studied Remy for a moment. It was just two entirely different groups of people! How could anyone get him mixed up with the Chinese. at Dani's comment, he shrugs a little, "There is a thing called asking..." That would have been the most simple thing to do. He after all asked Gambit where he had been from. Luckily, Shiro wasn't an idiot and could pick up that it was clear Dani liked Remy more than him. He wasn't hurt over it, "I think it is a little different. The Chinese would get just as irritated if you thought they were Japanese. Bad blood, bad history," He twitched a little.

He sighed and took a drag before addressing Remy, "It's hard to understand. Like a combination of English and French. Both are not my native language. Hard to read," He didn't know what to think of Remy purely on the fact that his dialect was hard to understand. He didn't know Remy's intentions so didn't know if trust was an option, not that Shiro fully trusted anyone anyway. But trust did have levels.

As the two seemed to be more interested in tossing a ball around, he backed off. Even if he wanted to shoot some hoops, teams would be uneven. No, he would just finish his cigarette and probably head in.

"I was offended when I was mistaken for a Latina, but I calmly explained to the woman that I was Cheyenne. I got an awkward apology and then she slinked way with her tail between her legs." Shiro had basically ignored her, but she would put her two cents in anyway. Gambit was from New Orleans, but he might not have been around people of different races very often, so mistakes would naturally be made. Remy had apologized for his blunder, so all was well in Dani's book. She gave Gambit sly grin and caught the ball when he tossed it to her. "I'm sure you could." she laughed lightly. She glanced over at Shiro who looked about finished with his cigarette, "Would you like to join us? We can play 'pig' or 'horse'." she gave him a smile.

The Japanese fellow seemed to be done with them for the time. "Bad blood," huh. Bad history. None of that had involved Shiro, had it? Gambit pondered. He took a long drag, nearly doing away with his own bummed cigarette. "Shouldn' hol' on to the pas' like dat. Migh' mess you up inside. Ain' dat what dey teachin' here?" He glanced to Dani for reassurance. "'Everyone is equal'. 'Learn from history'. Hate'll eat you righ' up." He knew. From personal experience, he knew. But the topic had gone lighter and he wasn't up to giving a lecture to a guy who'd never listen - at least not to the likes of Gambit.

Dani's suggestion wasn't a bad one, he decided, but he couldn't help thinking 'Or DRAGON, if it woul' make you more comf'terble, homme.' "I'll go easy on you." This was spoken slowly and with great articulation - his accent was nearly done away with.
