Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13

"That's the last of it." Mars stated as he set the last large box in the living room of his and Zap's new home. He had no desire to unpack any of this shit. On the way, they'd stopped at a few of the still abandoned stores to gather what they could (not that there was much left). After a relatively short discussion (as they had both been on the same page) the two had decided to take leave of Xavier's (living at the mansion, anyway) and strike out on their own. Being the only vampires in a mansion full of regular mutants (and post-vampires) was extremely irksome most of the time. Ronan and Zap were also feeling suffocated by Xavier. Not the man himself, but his ideas and rules. They were still under his payroll so to speak, but now they had the actual freedom to do whatever the hell they wanted when they wanted. There would be no snot-nosed brats running around, either (it also eased the urges to snap their necks when they got snarky). The world was also together enough to make the move safely (not that the two of them couldn't handle whatever came after them). They had wanted to leave the mansion for a while, but it was when they'd visited and helped Zap's family during the restoration when they'd felt the freeing push of independence. So, on their return, all that they owned (and stolen) went into boxes and now there they stood. Alone. Thank god.

Mars glanced around the cluttered room to one of the heavily sealed window (to keep out both light and intruders) then over at Zap, who was bent over and looking through one of the boxes. He side-stepped so he was beside her then reached down to give her a sharp jab in the ribs. "There's somethin' we need t'do before we unpack."

"Ronan Cormac Murphy," Zap muttered under her breath after his jab. She wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her forearm and shot him a disapproving, though mildly amused look. However unlikely it was that Mars was referring to something other than sex, she decided to take the bait. "What's that?" Eat? She could definitely eat. And she'd have to cook it herself. That would be something to get used to - cooking every meal instead of putting in an order with Gert. Or, more like sitting in on what Gert had whipped up that didn't include animal parts. Though, lately (the past 9 months), she had found it less and less of an issue to partake in non-vegetarian meals. She supposed the Upir virus was responsible for that.

She turned to face Ronan completely and placed her hands on her hips, bending slightly at the waist so they were nearly nose-to-nose. "Because we already christened this place when we came to check it out the first time."

"We didn't christen every room though, now did we?" he gave her a grin before he stepped away. Mars loved sex. There was no use in denying it. Sex with Zap happened to be the best sex ever, so it worked out well. While he left Zap to ponder that remark, he bent down to open one of the many boxes scattered about the room. He reached in to pick out a random item as his gaze moved back to Zap where he gave her a smirk. As soon as his hand closed around a soft object his eyes narrowed and his face became stony. There was only one thing he owned that could be that squishy... His blue eyes lowered to take in the sight of a battered (and slightly singed) stuffed rabbit. He'd forgotten about it... no he hadn't. How could he?

No, they hadn't christened every room. She had a feeling they might, though. She was about to voice that when Zap caught the look on Mars' face out of the corner of her eye. He had that 1,000-mile stare. She paused a moment before placing what she'd been in the process of unwrapping back into its box and she stepped the few feet over to where her husband had wandered. She pressed her shoulder against his and peered down into the box and his hand to see what he was looking at. She almost smirked at what she saw, but thought better of it. Lord only knew the reason he had something like that sitting around. Her arm shifted so it was behind him and her hand rested on the small of his back. "What's that?"

The Irishman's hand tightened on the rabbit and he turned his gaze to Zap when her hand made contact with his back. Ronan's face, save his eyes, were void of emotion. He had spoken of the time he left Ireland to Zap, but he'd never given the reason why. "Her name was Cate." his eyes drifted back to the toy, "She insisted I take this after I pulled her out of that burnin' buildin' when I was eighteen.. Anti-mutant protesters torched an apartment complex in hopes of outin' one o' the supposed mutants that lived there. Well, he wasn't home that night. Most o' the others were out when I got there. Her mother had run back in to get her, but hadn't come out. The fire hadn't enveloped where the two of them were, so I ran in without a thought in me head. I couldn't see a damned thing, the smoke was so thick. I felt the mother's power fade almost as soon as I went in. Piece of ceiling fell on her. The girl was in the closet, huggin' this." he gestured to the hare. "I grabbed her up and saw her to the hospital. After that I stuck around until they'd let me see her. Said I was her brother." a sad smile crossed his face, then faded away again, "They lost her. Before she went, though, she told me ta have this. Name's George. 'What kinda name is that fer a rabbit?' I said. 'For King George.' Very practical girl, that one."

Her chest tightened uncomfortably as Ronan's story went on; pity and sadness building up in her. Zap was still and silent until he finished speaking and her hand moved up his back once he was through. She had always known he wasn't uncaring, but at the moment she really felt like she was looking at an entirely different side of Mars; a more sensitive one. A more family-oriented one? She squeezed lightly with her hand when it reached the back of his neck and then moved back a bit and waited until they locked eyes to speak.

"I think it's good you kept it," her eyes flicked to the thing, then back to his again. However sad the story was, her heart was filled with pride (and an inkling of hope that there was potential for him where children were concerned). Her hand traveled outward and grasped his free one. "What about names for non-rabbits?" Zap's fingers faltered in their grip before slipping away again. "Like babies? Anything practical in mind for one of those?" Her eyes stared deeply into the box at her side for a second before chancing another look at Ronan.

He nodded in agreement at her statement as he released his hold on the bunny. His fingers wrapped around hers briefly, and a smirk lit up his face at her question. "Non-rabbits, eh?" Ah. There it was. The 'b' word. She'd been mentioning children more frequently as of late. It was beginning to become a bit wearing. "CailĂn," his voice was softer now than it had been during their whole conversation. It was obvious she wanted wee ones... Ronan wasn't sure if he did. "I don' think I'd make a very good father."

Damn it all. Self-pity (or self-doubt) wasn't flattering on Ronan. Still, his argument wasn't something she could brush to the side lightly (or easily). So Zap stepped back toward him and wedged herself so her feet were between his, then rested her cheek against his shoulder. She wanted to hold him and tell him he was speaking nonsense, and at the same time, she wanted to slap him on the ass for the possibility that he was feeding her bullshit excuses just because he didn't want to smell spit-up. "Is that was this is about? There's no way of knowing unless you try," she spoke away from him into the unfinished room. Zap sighed against him. "I love you. I can be twice the mom if you end up being an epic failure of a dad." Her head turned toward him now and she kissed his jaw before settling again. "But I think you have a great shot at doing just fine."

Ronan let out a sigh as Zap leaned against him. It wasn't the only reason, but he wasn't going to voice his other concerns at that moment. She was right. There was no way of knowing. "I love you too, but I can't ask that of ye if I did end up bein' a shoddy dad. That wouldn't be fair." He smiled a little at the kiss and he rested his head against hers when she put it back on his shoulder. He wouldn't fail. Well... he'd try his best not to. "I hope ye're right."

"You're not asking anything of me. I'm asking you to try. Life isn't fair," she recited the last bit; something he often said to others. Her arms moved to encircle him and pulled herself closer. 'Hope' - hey! That was something she didn't hear every day out of her fella. "I want something more out of life, and I want it with you." 'More' meaning children, not some of the other things people referred to when discussing getting the most out of life. "I'll do everything you need me to do," she swallowed slowly then added, "when the time comes."

"I'll do my best when we get to that point. But right now it's time for dinner." And a subject change. Ronan glanced around the room at all of the boxes. He normally would've suggested showing Zap what he wasn't and epic failure at, but all the mention of children and creating them had curbed his enthusiasm. For the time being. "So, what're ye gonna fix," he asked, giving her a smirk and a smack on the ass. "cupcake?"
