Who: Lily and Severus to start with, then any Marauders who want to join in and torment them >:D
What: Spending time together, and catching hell for it
When: A couple of weeks after the events of Lily's last post
Where: Grounds of Hogwarts
Warnings: None yet

The past two weeks had been two of Lily's happiest at Hogwarts. She had her best friend back, and she saw him nearly every day. And best of all? He seemed to trust her again.

Lily and Severus were finishing up Potions homework outside, as it was another nice and warm day. After she had finished writing down her last answer, she sighed contentedly, placing her quill down and stretching out on the ground to admire the clouds in the perfect blue sky. She fanned her hair out prettily around her head, looking up at Severus with her brilliant green eyes.

"What do you wanna do now?" she asked him.

The last two weeks were the happiest but they also had been torture for Severus. He was not able to just enjoy having his best friend from forever back, he had to realize that he didn't just have a little crush on her, he had fallen in love with her hard. He knew it was a stupid thing to do, he should have been able to stop himself from doing something like that, he was intelligent enough. But his intelligence had not helped him one bit, he knew he had fallen for Lily Evans and he knew what he wanted could never be.

He smiled a friendly smile at Lily, the kind not many got to see, "Sitting here and talk would be nice." He thought he was pretty good at hiding his real feelings for Lily and just show his friendship, all he had left to do was to convince himself that they were just friends. The moment Lily found the man of her dreams he wanted to be at a point that he believed that he didn't love her and then it would not feel like his heart was being ripped out or at least that was the theory he had. Believe he really didn't love her would mean that it would not hurt when she fell in love with someone that was not him, because no power on earth could make someone as perfect as Lily fall in love with someone like Severus Snape.

Lily smiled up at him. "Okay. Oh, actually, I did want to ask you something, now that I think of it."

Severus hid his feelings well - too well. However, Lily did not attempt to hide hers at all. She flirted with him on a regular basis, but he did not seem to pick up on it or flirt back. Sometimes it was a little discouraging, and she did not know whether he did not like it or if he just didn't understand her clues.

Perhaps he was afraid of having that kind of relationship with her. It would have been understandable. Maybe he did not want to ruin such a good friendship. And Lily did have to admit it: if Severus dated her, he would catch all new levels of hell from James and his lot. Though she'd do her best to protect him from that, she knew she couldn't keep him away from them forever. They'd go after him at a time when she couldn't be there, like when she was in class or something.

Still, she had to try. Lily thought it was a good chance that he just wasn't understanding what she was trying to do.

"I think I'm going to Hogsmeade on Friday. Would you like to go? Just you and me," she promised, knowing he would like it best that way.

Sometimes Severus thought that Lily was flirting with him, but of course that could not be true, it probably was just wishful thinking. He looked at her with surprise on his face, did she just ask him to go to Hogsmeade with her? That could not be right, could it? He resisted the urge to pinch himself to check if he was dreaming.

"Hogsmeade sounds nice." He said, realizing that again it was wishful thinking, Lily was just being a great friend. She was the nicest person he knew, it would be friends having a nice time nothing more. "I would be honored to accompany you." He bowed his head a little, hiding his face behind his too long black hair hiding the slight blush.

It would just be friends spending time together, but he could think of it as a date, in the privacy of his own mind.

Lily thought she caught a glimpse of his pink face before he tried to hide it behind his hair, as he tended to do a lot. So maybe he did realize what she was trying to do, and he was just shy.

Well, she could deal with shy. She thought it was sweet.

"They have some really nice places there. For socializing, I mean. And dancing." She knew he probably wasn't into dancing, but she was trying to drop hints that she was keen on it being an outing as more than friends. And one didn't often see male and female friends dancing together. Or, at least, Lily didn't see that often. Usually that was called a date.

Socializing was something Severus wasn't very good at, but he could manage that if he tried but dancing? Where was he when dancing was added to the list of things friends did? He never heard of that before, but of course he was raised in a very strict family.

"Dan... dancing..." He stuttered nervously. He bit his bottom lip as he tried to compose himself, he really did need to work harder on hiding his feelings. "I don't dance." It wasn't really the truth, he might dance if he even had a remote idea on how to dance. He blushed at the idea, he knew he was not able to hide that one.

"I never danced." He whispered not looking up at Lily.

"Oh, don't worry," she said, raising herself back up to sit instead of continuing to lie on her back. She placed a hand reassuringly on his arm. "I mean, we don't have to dance or anything. Just, you know. If you ever wanted to learn or anything..."

She trailed off, thinking he probably didn't want to. She bit her lip, then just smiled at him. "I'd have fun with you doing anything. It doesn't have to be dancing."

For a moment Severus just looked at Lily's hand on his arm. "I think it would be good to know how to dance." He stated, not sure why but he had heard that a ball was a very proper pureblood thing. He wasn't a pureblood, but a lot of Slytherins were and he had heard talk about dancing at a ball. It sounded absolutely horrible to him but if he could dance with Lily it might not really be so bad. Yes, he knew he was fantasizing about something that probably never would be.

"Have you every been to a ball?" He asked before he could stop himself, he hid behind his hair again cursing himself for that stupid question.

Lily was delighted at the question and did not think it was stupid at all.

"I haven't been," she answered, "but I'd love to go to one."

That was the best encouragement she could give him without being too forward. She was afraid she had already been too forward...

Severus was not sure to be happy or sad, the chance he would ever be able to take Lily to a ball was very slim. He was not from a rich pureblood family, he might be a Slytherin and he knew rich pureblood wizards and witches but that was not the same. He knew that it would be a huge miracle if he ever got an invitation to a real ball.

"I am sure you will go to one, Lily." Someone as pretty as Lily would probably be able to go to lots of balls, someone would sweep her off her feet and take her and she would be the belle of the ball.

Her hopes fell, and she became a little confused. Her countenance showed it; she was not good at hiding her feelings like Severus was. She had been certain he was about to invite her to one or something. Maybe she had been too forward with him and scared him away. Angry at herself, she reluctantly took her hand away from his arm. "I'd really like to go," she repeated quietly, knowing it was no use. Lily cursed herself inwardly for trying too hard.

Severus was confused, what did he miss? Lily wanted to go to a ball, she stated that twice now, but he had no clue what that had to do with him. He didn't know of any ball, he never been to one, he never had even been invited to one. They had been talking about Hogsmeade, they didn't have a ballroom there, did they? Honestly, he did not know, it was something he never thought of looking for before.

"Is there going to be a ball soon?" He asked still wondering what he had missed, he was not good when it came to what girls wanted or were thinking about. He wondered if he should learn legilimency, maybe then he would be able to figure out what people wanted from him.

"No," she said, her cheeks feeling like they were on fire. "I just... thought, I thought, since you asked... Er, I thought you knew of one and...that... you-were-about-to-ask-me-to-one," she mumbled.

Flustered, this time Lily was the one trying to hide behind her hair. She looked down at the ground, not daring to meet his eye now. Stupid stupid stupid, she told herself.

It took Severus a few moments to figure out the mumbling and then it took another few moments for his brain to get around the fact that Lily had expected him to invite her. He would do that in a heartbeat but the fact that it seemed that she wanted to go to a ball with him, was a big surprise.

"I don't get invited to fancy things like a ball." He stated trying not to sound to bitter, but then he got an idea. He looked around to see if they really were alone, when he didn't spot anybody he got up and extended his hand to Lily. "Why don't you show me how to dance at a ball." He hoped it would make his friend smile again.

It did make her smile. "Really?" she asked, taking his hand and standing up. She held on to that hand and guided his other to her waist, showing him the standard waltz.

"The steps are pretty simple. Of course, it's much better with music," she told him apologetically, bringing her arm up to rest behind his neck.

She lost her breath for a moment as she looked up and realized how close her face was to his. Trying to ignore her feeling of giddiness that undoubtedly came from being so close to him, she led him around in some easy steps.

"See? It's not that bad."

Severus knew how people danced of course, but still it surprised him when he was holding Lily so close, for a moment he didn't know what to do with his second hand. Noticing that Lily did not seem to have any trouble holding on to him he gently placed his hand on her back, not too low to be inappropriate.

At first he tried to follow her lead without looking down but that was not as easy as it sounded, before he knew it he was staring down at their feet wondering why something like dance seemed so much harder then the most intricate potion.

"Not too bad..." He muttered, not really convinced about that yet though. He was sure he looked like a dancing wooden chair.

She caught the unconvinced tone of his voice and promised, "Well, it gets better as you go along. But I think you're doing just fine."

She pulled away a little to twirl playfully, giggling.

"Mum says this is how they do at Muggle dances, anyway. I am sure it couldn't be much different for Wizards," she thought aloud before she could stop herself. Lily realized Severus probably was not keen on talking about her family or Muggles. "I wonder if they will have any balls here. At school, I mean."

Severus had to smile at Lily's playful twirl, he also had to stop himself from tumbling because watching her meant not watching what his feet were doing.

He didn't want to think or talk about the difference between muggles and wizards, the whole pureblood, half-blood and muggleborn discussion was something that filled him with dread. He was half-blood in a house filled with people thinking pureblood was superior and his best friend and the prettiest girl he knew was muggleborn. He just knew that was not going to end well

Severus decided to go with Lily's last statement, pushing the pureblood/muggleborn discussion away for now. "Maybe they will have one with Christmas." He tried, it sounded like the best time of the year to have a ball.

"That would be so much fun. I hope they do."

Lily added in a whisper, "But only if I can go with you, Severus."

Severus might be a strong-willed even stubborn person but how could he fight something as lovely as Lily? He couldn't. The little voice in his mind, the one that suspiciously sounded like his horrid father, told him that he would get hurt because he was too worthless to get anything as pretty as the redheaded witch that was dancing with him.

"That would be nice." He said very quietly, his face got redder then it ever had been. Was it possible to die from blushing?

"I think you could be a really good dancer with more practice," she encouraged him. "And I think any girl would be really lucky to go with you."

The lack of music didn't matter. Leading him in this simple waltz to no sound was the most fun she'd had all day. She could only imagine how wonderful it would be, the both of them dressed up, him looking more handsome than ever, moving easily to the music while surrounded by other spinning couples. But none of those girls in the other couples would be as happy as she would be with Severus.

And then maybe, when the music slowed down, they would dance very close, and at the right moment, he would lean down and gently kiss her just the way she imagined...

Snapping out of her daydream, she realized how close her lips were to his. It was a lot warmer outside now.

Severus really was just practicing dancing, he had not intended to get so close to Lily that he was just a breath away from kissing her. He worried his bottom lip looking at her lips, he knew he would be in a world of trouble if he gave into the urge and actually kiss her. Oh, he wanted to kiss her but, even though the dancing was nice and it really seemed like Lily wanted to go to a ball with him, he knew he should not indulge in a fantasy like that.

"I am not so sure I would be a good dancer." He spoke trying to break the tension between them, he would never do anything that would destroy their friendship or at least he would never do it on purpose. "But I am sure girls rather listen to Binns lecture then go to a ball with me." He grinned trying to make the last bit sound like a joke instead of his real insecurities put into words.

She giggled again, shaking off her silly daydream. "You don't give yourself enough credit."

Sighing a little, she stopped dancing and pulled away from him. It really was getting hot out here. "Next time we'll practice with music. You'll be an expert in no time." She winked at him, hoping he did not take her pulling away as wanting to be away from him. That wasn't it at all. She didn't know if she could afford for her mouth to be that close to his again. She might actually give in - and kissing him first would be very unladylike and improper. She had to wait for him to kiss her first.

Sirius knew he should be studying, but damned if he wanted to. Why should today be different from any other, right? Besides, it was a glorious day, too nice to be inside. Although he failed to convince Remus of that fact, to his chagrin, and had to content himself with a maybe I'll join you later when he suggested they take a walk to celebrate the weather. It seemed he had studying to do.

Oh well, maybe was better than no, wasn't it? And James said he'd come along too, and Peter. So all was right with the world. From their secret stash, he got some chocolates for later, just in case Remus really did turn up, putting them in one pocket. The other contained dungbombs. Also just in case. Once never knew what one might run into.

A lot of people had had the same idea, and Sirius found himself surrounded by admiring females, to his annoyance. But he put a good face on it, smiled at them, and exchanged pleasantries, leaving them behind, walking on air, as he bounced about the grounds.

He spotted a red head from a distance, and wondered what Lily was up to. Not for his sake, mind you, but for James. James had the most awful crush upon the girl, Sirius didn't know why. She was rather uptight and not exactly fun-loving. Worse than that, she was a known associate of He who would not be named.

As he drew closer, he saw that she was in his company now. What ever did she see in the git? His lip curled up into a natural sneer at the sight And why in the name of Merlin were they so close together? As if they were dancing? But that was a ridiculous thought, surely. And once he thought it, they pulled apart, so that mustn't be it.

And yet, he couldn't help but think that maybe he could act as though they were, wouldn't that just be galling to the Slytherin? Not to mention, he should report on this to James, he was sure his friend would not be amused.

"Well, well, well, what have we here?" he greeted them, as he walked up to the very cozy scene. "Since when do Gryffindors get all palsy with snakes, I ask you?" He was still galled from having to apologize to the greasy git, maybe he could find a little redemption here.

Quietly Severus thanked any god and goddess that looked down on him with at least a little bit of favor. If he had kissed Lily he would not have just been setting himself up for pain that came from heartbreak, he would actually would have been in real physical pain by now. He was sure that Black would hex before asking questions, especially without Lupin being there. He might not trust werewolves but he knew that Remus did seem to have a more or less positive effect on the rest of the Gryffindors.

Without thinking about it he moved to stand a little in front of Lily, not sure if he was protecting her from the bane of his existence or Sirius from the temper he knew his lifelong friend possessed.

"It is called dancing, Black." He explained as if he was talking to a little boy with the IQ of a newt. "All sophisticated witches and wizards do it." The 'best defense was an offense, might be a cliche but it was true.

"Exactly. And Severus happens to be really good at it," Lily spoke up for him. She moved to stand beside her friend, willing to defend him at any time. She was glad it seemed to only be Sirius, and no James in sight. At least, not yet. Maybe she could get him to go away before the rest of the gang showed up.

"Don't you have something better to do?" she asked Sirius, spotting the gaggle of girls staring at him from a distance. "Why don't you go back to them? Go be around people who actually want you, I mean."

"What's the matter, Evans, can't find a real partner, so you settled for him?" Sirius asked, his voice dripping with faux sympathy, although his pronunciation of the word him was filled with disdain. To tell Sirius was to do something was to risk his natural contrariness kicking in, causing him to do just the opposite. He glanced in the direction of the girls - that way held no appeal for him anyway, which made it easier to remain where he was.

"You wound me to the quick," he quipped, "here I am, come to spend quality time with you, my fellow Gryffindor, and you so callously toss me aside, and for the likes of him? Oh be still, my poor heart!" He clutched at his chest dramatically, dropping to one knee (he'd seen it done in a stage play once, he forgot the name).

Continuing with his drama, he fell upon the ground and "died", before rising to his feet once again, smoothing his robes once again, having fallen into disarray. His countenance was filled with mischief, now that he was started there was no stopping him. "Why'd you want to dance with something like that?" he gestured toward the lean lank figure of Snape, "when you could have your choice of much better partners. I'm sure James is a much better dancer than him. Better looking too. Course I suspect you knew that." It was a short in the dark. He wasn't sure how the redhead felt about his friend, but he sure as heck knew that James was besotted with her. Might as well try to earn Mr. Potter some much needed brownie points. Hell's bells, Evans could do a whole lot better than Snape without even trying. She had some really questionable taste, he thought.

If Lily had not been there Severus would have hexed Black with something to make him less attractive to the herds of brainless girls, but Lily was there and Severus was going to make sure he would be the one looking like the mature one. It would be the best revenge for the moment, Severus was not intending to forget this though, one day soon (or maybe even not so soon but he would not forget) he would get real revenge, he would be Slytherin about it and nobody would be able to prove it was him. If anyone knew how to hold a grudge it was Severus Snape.

He looked down on Black's theatrics, did anyone really think that was funny? He shook his head feigning pity.

Sirius' description of Potter brought an sickly sweet smile on Severus' face. "It sounds like you are the one who should be dating him, Black." He suggested sweetly.

---

Remus had been very productive, homework hadn't been as much as he had thought and without any distractions he had flown through it. He loved Sirius, he was not afraid to admit that to himself, but his dark-haired friend was extremely distracting. Remus was sure his friend didn't even realize how close he tended to sit to Remus and how often he accidentally touched him. It was driving the young wolf around the bend.

After returning his books to his dorm he decided to find Sirius and see if there was still some time in the sun left to enjoy. He moved out of the castle and spotted some girls, he was sure they would know where to find his friend. Of course the giggling group of 4th year Ravenclaw girls knew. He thanked them with a smile and went on his way.

He spotted Sirius and he was not alone. The students with his friend were easily recognizable from where the young wolf was standing. Severus and Lily. Remus knew trouble when he saw it and that was not just trouble, that was TROUBLE.

"Oh no!" He muttered as he started running, he had to stop fights between his friends and Severus, the Slytherin knew his secret and in a fight he might 'forget' he promised the Headmaster that he would tell nobody. With so many students around on a nice day like this it would be disastrous, best case scenario would be Remus being expelled, worst case scenario would him living out his existence in Azkaban.

He had to stop this but he was still so far away.

Lily stood helplessly and watched Sirius's antics, not knowing what to say immediately. She kept throwing glances at her best friend to see how he was taking this. He was holding up well; she hoped that he would not allow Sirius to hurt his feelings. Not that Severus ever would admit it if he did.

"Potter is vile. Why would I want to dance with an obnoxious toerag like him? He's arrogant and struts around like he thinks he's the best thing in the whole school," Lily said, getting angrier the more she thought about it. Why were they always trying to push James on her? "I think Severus has a point. If you think he's so great, you date him! Because I never will!" she shouted.

Sirius let their words roll off of his back. The point was that he was getting to Snape, and that pleased him. What didn't please him was the thought that a Gryffindor would ever be friends with a Slytherin. It was... it was... it was downright unnatural! Yes, that's what it was. An abomination.

"Can James help it he's popular?" He plopped himself back onto the ground, this time assuming a lotus position. Good thing he didn't carry any books on a regular basis, they'd just be in the way.

He pulled out his wand, and drew a heart in the air, a pretty sparkly thing. Inside the heart, he wrote JP + LE. And then he added an arrow for good measure. It hung in the hair rather nicely, and he was proud of himself for having got it right. He did practice his spells, just not necessarily the ones he was meant to be practicing.

He didn't bother arguing with Lily. He'd learned that trying to be logical with a female never came to any good - they just weren't. Instead, he smiled enigmatically, and said, affecting a slight lisp for effect, "Methinks thou dost protest too much, milady." Snape, he simply ignored.

Severus was just an inch away from hexing Sirius, he really wanted to be the mature one but Black was not making things easy for him. He did the whole 'count to 10'-thing not just once but twice, adding a few 'I am not going to kill Black' for good measure.

If Black could ignore him, he could ignore the bully back. He offered Lily his arm like the gentleman he wanted to be, "Let me escort you back to the castle, Lily." He said wondering if he ever would get the chance to take her to a ball, if he would this would be good practice too.

---

Remus got to the scene of impending disaster just in time to hear Severus speak. 'Yes,' he thought. 'Say yes, Lily' He tried to put the thought in the redhead's brain. If they left he could catch Sirius before his secret would be common knowledge.

He might not hate the Slytherin but he was not sure he trusted Severus enough to keep the fact that he was a wolf secret when he got angry enough.

"Hi." Remus tried to sound as happy as he could. "Isn't it a nice day?" Mentally he hit his head, brilliant Lupin!

Lily felt nothing but affection and admiration for Severus at that moment. He was handling things so well and not caving in to the pressure to stoop to Sirius's level, though he had more than enough reasons to. She took the arm he offered and glared at Sirius, then spoke to Remus.

"No, it's really not!" she snapped. "Well, not since he came along, anyway." She gestured at Sirius.

Lily felt bad for snapping at Remus, but she really didn't see why someone so nice would hang out with such awful people. "I'd love for you to take me back to the castle," she told Severus in a much sweeter tone, turning to walk that way with him.

"What, can't find your way?" Sirius couldn't seem to help himself, the words just slipped out of their own volition. He could see and feel Snape's annoyance. He enjoyed goading him, seeing how much it took to make him snap. Although if he were thinking, perhaps that wasn't such a good idea, given the knowledge the other possessed. Or maybe it was because of it, knowing that he was one to follow the rules, a regular stick in the mud that would not dare to go against Dumbledore's express orders not to talk about what he knew. Yes, Sirius felt Remus' secret was more than safe with Snape.

And speak of his friend, here he now was, as if Sirius' very thoughts had caused him to materialize. As if Snape and Evans no longer existed, he focused all of his attention on Remus Lupin, the center of his existence.

"Hello, Remy! Beautiful day, yes! Have you come to join us?" He gave Remus a beautiful smile, beckoning him to him, patting the ground beside him as he did so.

Severus was mentally counting to 10 a few more times, it really was so hard to not just give Sirius a piece of his mind. He wanted to point out to Black that he was the one that was hardly ever along, acting like Potter's little pet. That could wait though, now he had to make a great impression on Lily.

It was pretty clear to him that Lily was not enjoying her fellow Gryffindor's company which was, for now, good enough for him.

Severus gave Black a very dark 'if looks could kill'-glare before focussing his attention on Lily, smiled at her and started to lead her away.

---

The moment Remus saw Severus' intention to leave with Lily the wolf released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. This time his secret was still safe, he decided to be more vigilant in the future though.

He gave Lily a small apologetic smile before turning to Sirius, "want to go the the lake?" He hoped he could put as much distance between his friend and the Slytherin as possible.

Lily could think of hundreds of things she wanted to say to Sirius as she left, none of them nice. Lily forced herself to return Remus's smile, trying to communicate wordlessly that she was sorry for snapping at him. She walked at Severus's side, silent until they were out of earshot of the others.

"Sorry," she said to him, unable to help apologizing as if the whole thing were her fault. "I don't know why they can't leave me alone. I guess some people can't handle rejection so they have to send their friends out to advocate for them." Lily rolled her eyes.

"To the lake?" Sirius echoed, distracted from thoughts of Snape and Evans by Remus' presence. "I'd love that!"

He leapt to his feet, and hooked his arm through Remus. "Lead on, MacDuff!" he encouraged him, feeling his heart expand so much he was almost delirious with joy. Having an adventure with Remus was the best thing ever!

Severus never looked back at the Gryffindor banes of his existence, his attention fully directed to the pretty redhead who he was trying to impress with his great amounts of maturity. Lily was more important to him then anyone had ever been and ever would be.

---

Remus smiled at Sirius, glad that the disaster had been so easily averted.

The arm through his arm was terribly distracting though, he might be glad that he had stopped another battle between the two most stubborn people he ever met, the proximity of his friend to him presented him with another set of problems.

One problem was luckily well hidden by the school robes, his blush was not so easily hidden though. "Shakespeare?" It sometimes amused Remus that so many in the wizardingworld quoted a muggle like Shakespeare and never heard of a gramophone.

He started to move toward the lake, hoping that moving would distract him from just how close Sirius was standing to him.

"Aye, Remy, Shakespeare!" Sirius replied affably. "He has a lot of the most interesting things to say, you know? I can tell you lots of them!

He forgot all about Evans and Snape, focusing his entire being on Remus, as they walked toward the lake, his eyes shining, chattering excitedly away.

He never noticed Remus' discomfort at his proximity, and he was oblivious to his own reactions to Remus' company, not even the way his heart sang whenever Remus was around. Ah, the innocence of youth!
