Max stood in front of the monitor and listened as Richard Woosley chastised her for not during her job. According to him, she hadn't done enough to pull the Atlantis expedition together, nothing she'd had plenty of time to at least put a dent in their ways and steer them in the right direction. Rubbing her forehead, Max listened to him read her the riot act about why the expedition was going to fail.
"Mister Woosley, I have to disagree with you," she suddenly said, hoping to put a stop to his useless ranting. "There is nothing wrong with these people getting married and having families."
Woosley started at this and narrowed his eyes. "It distracts them from their work when they act like a bunch of hormonal teenagers," he huffed.
"You're wrong," Max said in a steady voice. "The moment these people started to have children, the more efficient they became. This is no longer a job to them but a home."
Woosley snorted and shook his head. "You've been listening to them, haven't you? I think you need to remember the IOA is right and they're wrong," he said. "I'm sorely disappointed in your performance Doctor Pace. Lets hope it improves. I look forward to your next report and I do hope it's better than your last."
Before Max could respond, the monitor went black. Taking a step back, she glanced at Chuck and thanked him before leaving Operations. She started toward her office, trying hard to ignore the glares she received from passerby's. Max had been on Atlantis for over three weeks and had quickly became the most hated person there.
Part of her knew she still had a job to do for the IOA, but with each passing day it became more difficult. Everything Woosley had told her about the expedition had been false. He'd made it sound like all the members held late night orgies and didn't care about the city. None of it was true. The people of Atlantis loved the city and worked hard to keep it running and to protect it.
All Woosley did was cause Max to alienate everyone around her. None of the senior staff seemed to like her and she had become the victim of numerous pranks. If people weren't stealing the crystals out of her quarter's control panel, they were stealing or destroying other things that belonged to her. Max knew she should probably tell someone but figured no one would listen.
Turning down the hall and toward her office, Max slowed her steps and looked up. Hanging from one of the light fixtures was one of her tablets. It'd been hanging there since earlier in the morning and she needed to get it down since it contained some of her research data.
Max looked behind her and saw a bench sitting there. She pulled it to under the light fixture and climbed onto it. Reaching up, she was able to grab the tablet but couldn't get it loose from the fixture.
"Crap," she muttered as she tried again.
