Night's End (Lindsey)
Takes place just after this

The night had gone very well in Lois's opinion. She'd gotten some good quotes and just enough backstory to keep things interesting in regards to the opening of the opera house. The article was still leaning toward puff piece, but Lois supposed that every reporter had to pay their dues on that sometime.

And besides, she'd had a fantastic night. The opera truly had lived up to the expectations and it had been... nice to be out with someone when it wasn't strictly business. Sure, she was there in a professional capacity. But Lindsey had been there as her date-or escort, or whatever the proper term was. It had been nice to have that. Nice to have someone to dance with and talk to. So far during her time in the City, she hadn't exactly made any friends. That wasn't new to Lois-she could be a little bit abrasive and with her line of work, friends usually didn't come easy. All the same, she wasn't hating the time spent with Lindsey.

Then again, Lois did have a knack for finding men who could be trouble. She hadn't forgotten Lorne's warning, nor would she just ignore it. She just knew that she couldn't live her life in fear of things that might or might not happen. And maybe that was part of what was attracting her to Lindsey-that mystery. She definitely didn't know the whole story and she couldn't help but wonder-it was in her nature to wonder. Maybe spending time with him wouldn't get her answers and she valued the new friendship (or whatever else it might be) too much to press too hard. All the same, she couldn't help but want to solve the mystery surrounding the lawyer.

"This is my place," she said as Lindsey's truck turned down the street where her apartment was.

Lindsey pulled up in a spot where he could parallel park and killed the engine.

He leaned forward slightly to get a better look, past Lois, of the place she called home. It was still difficult to imagine that she existed off of a page. But not only was she real, Lindsey was pretty close to certain he had a thing for her. That thought had gone through his head a fair amount. It wasn't a new idea.

He gave her a smile, a slight one. He was good at those.

"Have a good night?"

Lois did have a home here. That was the one thing that she'd been grateful for. She'd found a little apartment. It wasn't much, but it was a home. In fact, she'd had a little more stability than she was used to in her time in the City. The inability to go anywhere meant that she couldn't bounce around from place to place like she had for pretty much all of her life, first from being an army brat and then from simply trying to find a place where she fit. She still didn't know how she fit in the City, but this was her little corner of the world here and she was fond of it even if it wasn't anything fancy.

She quirked an eyebrow at Lindsey as he looked past her at the building. She wasn't sure why he seemed to find it so interesting, but he did.

She nodded in response to the question and gave him an easy smile.

"I did. Thank you for coming with me. Did you have fun?"

He smirked. Lindsey was not especially good at saying 'you're welcome.' Mostly because, in recent history, he'd done a lot of hiding and not being near people followed by trying to destroy Wolfram and Hart. Those things didn't lend themselves to a lot of 'thank yous.'

He did have fun. Despite himself, Lindsey really did enjoy theatre and opera and all that. He wasn't sure if it was because of his time in L.A., living what he considered a life that was not his, or because deep down those things really resonated. He was leaning toward the latter. He was, after all, a musician.

"I did," he said. "Haven't been out to a theatre in a long time."

(no worries!)

It was okay that Lindsey wasn't used to saying 'you're welcome.' Lois wasn't used to thanking people for things either. She raised an eyebrow at Lindsey and looked from her building back to him.

"Good. So, you going to walk me to the door or what?"

She grinned to show him that she was teasing. Lois wasn't the type to invite a guy in after the first date, but she also wasn't going to let him get away with just dropping her off without walking her to her door. Not when they'd done the whole formalwear thing and all.

He gave her a close-lipped smile.

Lindsey's mother hadn't raised her son not to walk women to the door--date or not. He also opened doors, unless you were Lilah Morgan.

He was out of the truck in another second and walking around to the passenger side, then opening the door for Lois, and giving her an even larger grin.

He didn't say a word, just offered her his arm.

Lois beamed up at Lindsey and accepted the offered arm. With her free hand, she gathered up her dress so she could step out of the truck without it getting snagged on anything.

Once outside, she looked over at Lindsey and then started to lead the way to the apartment. Lois liked gentlemanly behavior, but she wasn't a follower. She even sometimes found herself trying to lead when dancing. She didn't mean to, but she just wasn't very good at relinquishing control.

Once they got to the door, Lois stopped and considered Lindsey for a few minutes. Her lips curved up in a smile.

"Thanks again for a lovely evening."

This felt oddly first date-y. Like when Lindsey was a kid, and would take a girl out in high school to a dance. That's kinda what this felt like. He figured that made some kinda sense... wasn't Lois Lane supposed to be THE definitive girl-next-door, or was he wrong about that?

Of course, most of Lindsey's dates went better after college, once he had the law degree and the fancy suits and a prettier set of words to come out of his mouth.

"Not a problem," he said. "Well, minus the minor inconvenience of the suit, anyway." He gave her a wink.

This was that awkward part of any outing with a girl you thought was pretty, Lindsey knew. He'd kind of like to kiss Lois. But that...

Worms. Big can of 'em.

Lois knew this part of the night all too well herself. For her, it was usually the dance of will he-won't he, and sometimes the rush to excuse herself before said guy got the chance to try. She didn't want to excuse herself this time, but she also didn't know exactly what this was with Lindsey. There was a part of her that had a fear of even trying for more than friendship. After all, she had a habit of screwing relationships up and she didn't want to risk doing that with the only person in the City that she actually would consider a friend.

That didn't stop her from reaching up and giving him a kiss on the cheek. After all, he had donned a tux and taken her to the opera. Guys didn't do things like that for her every day.

She beamed up at him.

"You don't like monster trucks, do you?"

Lois did love her monster truck rallies after all. It wasn't asking him on a date. Not... exactly. Just another chance to hang out. Maybe.

She always did have a habit of coming on too strong when she liked someone.

Not surprisingly, Lindsey's cheek tingled where Lois's lips touched.

You don't like monster trucks, do you?

His eyebrow arched, and he looked down at her, slightly puzzled. He'd never heard those words outta a girl's mouth before. Ever.

He wasn't a giant fan or anything, but there were few kinds of trucks Lindsey didn't like. He'd prefer a good classic car show any day of the week, but there was something that was a lot like back home about anything that had to do with trucks and racing (or wrecking) them.

Lindsey smirked. "They're ok. You tryin' to ask me out again?"

Lois would be quick to point out that she wasn't a normal girl. Not even a little bit. She did laugh softly at the question.

"I don't know. It could just be two friends enjoying a night out with monster trucks?" she asked with a small smile.

She wasn't opposed to the idea of a date, though she'd had her heart broken enough over the past few years that she was just a little bit gunshy. However, she hadn't missed the fact that this night out had felt distinctly date-like and Lois did like to test her boundaries sometimes.

His eyebrow raised and lowered. Lindsey did an awful lot of that dance between together and not together, especially with Darla. Lois was obviously a much nicer girl... 'girl,' too. Human.

Eve hadn't been human, not really. And being in lust with a vampire for so long wasn't normal, either.

Maybe he was getting soft in his old age.

"Could be," he said.

Couple years back, he remembered that there was a song on the radio with a chorus about Superman being dead. It popped into his brain and a smirk crept across his face. Lindsey leaned forward and gave Lois a similar kiss on the cheek, like the one she'd given him.

"Guess we'll see. I'll go with ya, though."
