Thoughts and errands, thoughtful errands (Annie, Megan)
Fred hadn't been in hiding since the strange meeting at the bookstore. She'd meant to check on Errol, but the check-up hadn't gone at all how she'd planned. Not that she'd had anything planned in particular, but she was certain that she would not have planned what happened had she been allowed to plan anything. Or admitted to planning anything.

She was glad to see that Errol was working with someone, rather than sitting all alone in the bookstore. He needed companionship, someone to remind him that he was human and it was okay to smile. Beauty seemed very much the right person for that, what little Fred had been able to gather from the odd brief meeting. She smiled - Beauty had - which was a good thing. And, she was soft in a giving way; Beauty'd only wanted the best outcome, hadn't she? She cared, again another plus in Fred's opinion. Of course, this was all going on a very short brief meeting and way too many assumptions. Then again, Beauty worked in a bookstore, not a strip joint, so surely she was that sort of bookish Beauty, not the other kind? Not that there was anything wrong with strippers; Fred just hadn't met many.

The brainy Texan continued this sort of inner dialogue, working out what had happened as well as throwing in a few items from her day job; she was starting to wonder if they didn't need an accountant or insurance. Angel Investigations wasn't a huge money maker, but sure, she could make the money that did come in work for her somehow.

The City allowed her time to think during her walk. She had a destination in mind, a purpose, and she hoped that she was going to get good answers. Annie could help; she just knew the technopath could. That's what mutants were for if they weren't trying to take over the world and subjugate the human race, right?

It was a really nice day. So instead of teleporting to work, even though that would have got her there early, Megan took the long way. She even picked up some breakfast on the way. Even though breakfast for most people wasn't fresh baked cookies, she supposed. It was still baked goods, and they had eggs in them, so it counted.

She walked, even, that's how nice of a day it was. Too much flying and she would forget what her legs were for. Megan had her earbuds in, nearly skipping along to the beat of her happy playlist. She grinned at people as she passed them by, usually getting a smile in return.

She kind of loved it here, except for the vampires.

Annie had gotten up early to get herself breakfast at a little cafe that she'd spied out her bedroom window. She'd rushed, not knowing how long it would be there, and she really wanted something that she didn't have to cook herself right now.

On her way back, she spied Megan's pink hair. She could feel the technology that Megan was using and briefly thought of using it to alert the other girl of her presence, but decided she didn't want to interrupt a good song. So she just sped up to a slow run until she was side by side with the fairy.

Megan seemed to be in a good mood today. Not that she'd seemed otherwise in the time that Annie had known her, but the mood seemed even lighter today.

She smiled at her friend/employee.

Megan wasn't the only one with toys. Fred had a camera she'd lifted from the Tower and her tablet. She couldn't get rid of the tablet; she rarely went anywhere without, seeing as she was very stuck to it.

"Could you help me? I have a friend. Could you do something for me? It's for a friend. Do you think you could diagnose something? Is it even possible to be sick? Viruses do exist." Fred was talking to herself at the moment. She blinked as the person she was practicing for was right there in front of her with...

Fred's mouth might have been open in a little 'o.' Was that what she thought she was seeing? Or more a who. That wasn't a what, that was a who. Who was a who? She had wings? She blinked. Wings! Those were wings?

"Annie!" Megan said, bouncing up and sticking there. Wings were useful that way. "It's so pretty out, isn't it? I got breakfast!" She popped out the earbuds, draping the cord over her neck, and held up the bag, showing it off. "Mostly chocolate chip, but I got some oatmeal raisin, since it's technically breakfast and all." She took one out of the bag--chocolate chip, naturally--and held it back for Annie.

Someone talking just behind them caught her attention, and she turned and smiled down-ish at the woman staring. It usually helped to smile when people stared.

Annie took the cookie. She'd had real breakfast after all, nothing wrong with morning dessert. Though, honestly, she probably would have taken it anyway. The cookies smelled so great.

She turned her attention to where Megan was looking and spied Fred standing there looking surprised, though not in a bad way. Annie could see that the other girl was entranced with Megan, and for good reason.

"Hey, Fred!" She waved a hand in front of her face to bring her out of her stare. "This is Megan. She works for me. Megan, this is Fred."

"She's got wings." Fred smiled, brightly, very brightly. "You've got wings. You know you've got wings? Of course, you know you've got wings. They're your wings. They're lovely wings. I've never met anyone with wings. I've said 'wings' too many times, haven't I?" She wasn't blushing; she was just very happy to see something new that hopefully didn't mean her death. Curiosity was definitely something that would kill a Burkle cat, especially this Burkle cat.

"Annie! You know her! Oh! Megan, lovely name. Are you able to do what Annie can do? Are you like Annie? That's wonderful if you can, but if you can't, that's okay, too. You've got wings. Is your hair that way naturally, or do you do that to yourself?" She continued to smile; her original purpose for finding Annie was forgotten for the moment, even if she was carrying a camera, a tablet, and thinking about a phone somewhere.

"Hi. I'm Fred, even though she just said it. It's nice to meet you, Megan." She held up her hand to the pretty winged type person.

"I've got wings," Megan said agreeably. "Thank you. Want one?" She held the bag out to Fred.

"I can't do what Annie does," she said, looking suddenly bashful. "She's useful, isn't she? I fly, and I've got the hair and ears and all, and I've got this dust... it's good in a pinch, but it's not useful, like." And the other things, but those were less mutations and more unpleasant but useful side effects. But it was a nice day, and she wasn't going to think about that. She grinned instead. "It's fun, though. The hair's real, by the way." She shifted the bag around to shake Fred's hand. "It's nice meeting you, too! And yeah, I'm Megan. Have you been here long? Where are you from?" She glanced quickly at Annie. "Or when. That's seeming like it's a thing here. Weird, isn't it?"

"Pretty much all of us do different things." Annie said to Fred. "Sometimes there's similar stuff, but I've never seen anyone with exact powers as anyone else. But I haven't met very many mutants anyway, so maybe there has been. Megan would know better than me."

It was fun to see somebody have pretty much the same exact reaction to Megan that she'd had. The wonder of it. The fascination.

"When is definitely a thing." She agreed. "When and where, I think that's the question I'll be asking for the rest of my life here."

"I suppose that's how it is with everyone really. Some people can do somethings, and others can do other things, and we all kind of work out. Usually." Fred smiled up at the winged girlie; she was very excited to see more mutants. It made her very happy to know of them.

"Yes, when, where, multiple realties, it can be very confusing and interesting. I'm from early 21st century. LA most recently. Was in a different dimension all together before that, so I've been so many places, though not many." Her nose wrinkled as she thought about it. "Then again, I was from Texas before then. Hope that helps in figuring the when, where, and maybe not the why, but the who."

She smiled at the two young women. "Annie, I had a few questions for you. Some are for me; some are for a friend."

"There's some overlap, but I haven't seen anyone exactly the same," Megan told them. "Unless you count the Stepford Cuckoos. But even they're not the same all the time. They're these telepath girls who like to freak everyone out by saying the same things at the same time," she clarified. "I think they're sort of a hive mind or something, and also maybe clones, but I've never been sure and we don't really talk much." She sounded remarkably matter-of-fact as she said it. Just another day for Megan Gwynn, whose best friends were a lizard guy and an exploding rock person and whose former roommate had been a female clone of one of her teachers.

"I'm from Wales," she told Fred, "Except I spent a lot of time in New York and San Francisco and a floating island off the coast of San Francisco and then there was some time in another dimension but it doesn't really count. Did they have Dazzler where you're from?" She hoped so. She liked talking music with people, and so far nobody here had heard of Dazzler. It kind of took the awesome out of bragging that she'd been a back-up dancer for her for a while.

She landed and shoved some food in her mouth while Fred asked her questions. It was a good opportunity, as well as ensuring that she wouldn't interrupt. Probably.

"Of course, Fred." Annie smiled. She was glad to help where she could, and glad to be able to use her powers here like she did. No worrying about who might see and who might tell whom. It was sort of nice, actually. She had a whole shop dedicated to what she could do. Definitely a step above working in a factory.

"You know, Megan, you should just stop telling us all about Dazzler, and actually play us some music some day." Annie grinned. The fairy had asked her the same thing, and she'd still had yet to hear anything from the artist.

"The mutant who got all sparkly when sound was happening?" Fred was only remembering bits and pieces. She looked from the winged pinked mutant to the one she'd come to see. It was definitely an odd and wonderful fun bit for the day. It made her happier.

"Can we go in? And, I'm not sure you should know about all of this, either of you, without my friend around, but you may have to look at things eventually that aren't really for just anyone to look at, though you can get it online." Fred shrugged slightly and started toward the shop, but not so quickly that the girls couldn't catch up with her.

"Also..." She offered up one of the cameras. "I need to know what you can do to this."

"Or I could do that," she said agreeably. "I have her last three albums queued up on here, if you're interested. Maybe after you're done with your business?"

She beamed at Fred. "That's the one! I was one of her backup dancers for a while before coming here. Kind of an all mutant special effects crew between her light show and my dust. It was so fun." She sounded wistful. There were parts of the past year that she could have done without--a lot of the past year, actually--but she wouldn't trade that for anything.

She trotted after Fred and Annie, knowing she was absolutely no use other than moral support when it came to repairs but glad for good company.

Annie went inside the shop, holding onto the camera that Fred had offered up. To look at it, it didn't look very special on the outside, but if Fred was bringing it to her, likely there was something about it.

"I won't say anything about whatever I see." She promised.

"Megan, why don't you go ahead and put the music on now. I don't mind it while I'm working, it doesn't distract." She was eager to hear this Dazzler now that Fred had said she knew about her, too.

She moved to her typical spot behind the front counter. Mostly because that's where her stool was, and waited for Fred to explain or ask the questions that she had.

"You don't need silence to talk to them? I guess you don't, seeing as you've let me talk during the last time I was here." Fred laughed softly and shrugged. "I'd like to hear her. I remember her being all flashy and stuff, but I never got to hear it. So, yes, that'd be great." She gave an emphatic nod to the pixie/fairy/mutant before turning her attention to the cyberpath.

"The camera. It's one of Jensen's, but I thought maybe if we established some sort of ad hoc protocol? We created sister/brother/whatnot systems. They always connect to certain ones. We'd have to boost their signals, sending/receiving, but they always find each other, always connect and report in relation to each other. If we can find how and when and all that, what if they give us more information. Data is good." Fred smiled. It was a step in some direction; she just didn't know what.

"I have a friend who got stuck with a problem phone. I thought if anyone could fix the phone, it would be you. If you couldn't fix it, you could at least figure out why it didn't want to cooperate. You're good like that, right?" She didn't exactly smile; this was definitely something serious Fred wanted to see done. It had to be. Dinah needed some peace.

Megan flew in after Annie and Fred, heading up toward the ceiling and looking for a set of speakers she'd seen the other day while cleaning up there. She didn't plan to take them home and didn't figure that Annie would mind if she used them for a quick demonstration so long as she didn't break them or steal them.

"Aha," she said, finding the speakers she'd been looking for and flying them down to where Fred and Annie were at the counter. "I'm going to put them right back, promise," she told Annie. She plugged them in, made sure that the volume wasn't too loud, and set her playlist to shuffle by artist. Dazzler's cover of "Proud Mary" came blaring out.

"A recording really doesn't do her justice," Megan said. "The live show's the best, with Ali doing her thing." She sat back to let them listen and let Annie do her thing.

"Nope." Annie assured Fred. "It's not really like normal talking, and I don't want you guys to get bored or anything while I'm doing it, so why not."

She nodded as she listened about the camera and thought about what she could do. It would be easy, really. But she'd maybe need access to more than just one. This one would be a good start, but talking to them all in a group, all at once, that would be easier. She wondered if Fred would be okay if she found a way to link into the system, or if that would be a no-no.

First the phone. Annie held out her hand. "What's wrong with it?" There was another phone she'd just fixed, and she wondered if maybe it was the model having issues. If that was so, they were going to get a whole lot of business, seeing as most people she ran into had the same thing.

Annie glanced at Megan. "Well, yeah. With everything you're saying, I doubt that hearing the music is going to be the same as experiencing a whole concert. Which, by the way, sounds like it would have been a blast to go to. Maybe if she shows up here you guys can give us a little minishow."

She did like the music, though, and smiled to convey that to the pink haired girl.

Fred listened to the music; she liked it well enough, but her mind was on other things. She leaned against the counter to watch Annie, peeking at the winged wonder now and then.

"Oh, uhm, someone might have done something to it. I don't want to get into too much detail because it's not really my phone. It's my friend Dinah's phone. She is having some issues with it." She shrugged. "Think it's better if she tells you, just wanted to make sure you were up for maybe fixing a phone. I have to get her in here to see you." She nodded.

"So, what do you think?" Fred reached out and nudged the camera. "Think we could work something out?" The brainy female looked at the pixie girl.

"It's really good. The music. The show must be amazing." She smiled. "And what do you mean dust?"

"That's the second one this week, isn't it?" she asked Annie. "Do you think I should make sure mine's okay?" She perked up at the name, though. "I know a Dinah! Or I met one once. It's not a common name, is it?"

Megan grinned at Annie. "It's not just a live show. Ali converts sound to light, so her concerts are something special. It's like... interpretive dance, only flashier. And you don't really need to dance. And a lot prettier, if you ask me. Also, she can blow people up with it, but it's not usually a worry at the concerts. She taps into the music, like, and gets the emotions across. It's awesome."

She turned back to Fred, looking pleased with herself. "So my mutant power--other than the wings and looks and all--is this dust. We call it pixie dust because of how I look, right? It makes people see things. Hallucinations. Only nice things, though," she rushed to add, even if she wasn't entirely sure of that after Limbo and having her dust fed back to her. But she'd heard people talk about fish and bees and unicorns, so it probably still did. "I used to go to some of Ali's concerts and fly over the crowd, do a little dusting, and, you know... bright lights, pretty things, everyone went home happy. Not even a headache after."

"Oh!" Annie laughed. "Yeah, just send her in, that's fine."

She didn't hesitate to check Megan's phone and then her own. Her eyes went fuzzy while she did it, but it only took a couple of seconds. "Our phones are fine, Megan. I don't know what's going on. I hope they stay fine. If this is some kind of mass problem, or some kind of ... happening, I don't know. That guy's was pretty easy to fix, though."

It had taken her only a moment or two to delve in and tweak what needed to be worked out. She'd also replaced his battery, because it needed to be. He'd been a little strange, a little spooky, and the memory of him made her shiver a little bit. Even though he'd done nothing wrong and hadn't even been rude or acted in a strange way. The big words, though, she hadn't ever heard anyone talk like that.

And, okay, maybe it was the eyes.

"I think I can work out what you're looking for. But I need to connect into just this one. I can do that by plugging this one into the system the others are on, but otherwise trying to give this one instructions to send out to it's fellows is going to tax what you're trying to do. There's a chance that without me to guide it and connect the ones you want to relay to each other, with the movement of the streets and everything, that it'll just all get confused. If I hit them all at once, I can link the pairs then, and just leave them with the instruction on where to send the information they gather."

She hoped that made sense. Since she was talking to Fred, she thought that the other would be able to see what she meant.

"I like the sound of that concert." She said to the fairy.

"You might need into the system as a whole to create pairings or groups?" Fred smiled slightly. "I think if you wanted, you could get into it without asking or hinting. So, I'm going to say 'yes.' You haven't tried, and you are kind of hinting." She didn't seem to mind.

"I know I just met you, Megan, and this is going to sound all grown up and judgmental. But, I don't think the whole dust hallucination thing is very nice. It seems..well, kind of tricky and sneaky. It's like slipping a little E into someone's drink. Sure, they may feel uberspiff, but what are the aftereffects, what is really happening to them? How is that ethical? They didn't ask for the dust did they? I'm not saying you were being malicious, but that wasn't very responsible if Dazzler was an adult." Her head tilted slightly as she looked up at the winged girl.

"I'm sorry. That wasn't cool. Was it?" She liked being cool, but she also wanted to understand.

"It's an experience," she told Annie.

Megan frowned at Fred. "It's not really supposed to be nice, ordinarily," she said. "It's a defense mechanism. Like squid ink, only it's pink and dusty. And Dazzler advertises that she makes use of mutant powers in the show. It's kind of her thing." Except she couldn't remember if her dust was ever advertised. She was fairly sure it was. It had to be. Ali was a responsible adult who didn't want to get sued.

Except she and Jean-Paul did take her out drinking that one time...

"And it's not like anyone ever got a lot of dust, with me spreading it out so much," she said, pushing past that annoying little thought. "It doesn't actually hurt you after. I should know, someone once pulled it out of me and shoved it back and made me think I was somewhere else." Okay, that came out entirely more bitter than she meant it to. She smiled nervously, her fingers suddenly picking at the hem of her shirt. "I was fine after, though. Got rid of him and everything, just fine."

Annie listened to the exchange. "I'd guess it'd be a lot like going to a Reggae concert, if you wander in and expect you aren't going to get lit up like a Christmas tree, you've gone to the wrong place."

She took the camera in hand and looked it over again before setting it deep behind the counter. She thought she'd need a couple of hours to get them to do just what Fred wanted, and that was if everything behaved. Considering that the City had a mind of it's own - literally - she didn't know how much it would like what they were trying to do.

Annie didn't think that Megan's concerts sounded that bad, but she'd tried various substances on her own, without going to concerts where they might have been dumped on her by a fairy.

"Hey," She said, thinking. "I thought that mutant powers weren't supposed to work on the mutants they came from when it's stuff like that. That must have been fairly unpleasant."

"But, you know what you get at a reggae concert. You drug someone, you drug someone. I doubt they'd advertise drugs. Or dust. It's a hallucinogen. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but that still was a precarious situation to put you in." Fred shook her head.

"It also makes me wonder how good she thought her show was if she had you flying around. I mean, she could do nifty things, but if she felt she needed you, whether she said it or not...or even knew it. That's just a weird thing to do at a concert and it be legal." Her nose wrinkled.

"Bah, I should like an old person." Her nose wrinkled. "And, I am sorry someone did that to you. Maybe I should just leave this for you...and I'll come back? I'll find a sunbeam to fall asleep in or yell at kids to get off my lawn?"

"They're not supposed to," she told Annie. She hesitated before adding, "There were demons involved. And kidnapping. And magic. It was a really bad evening." She still felt horrible about it, especially about leading her friends into a trap that had only been meant for her. She'd only been meaning to share something nice with them, since it was supposed to have been an exclusive concert. No good deed went unpunished--or in this case, un-kidnapped by demons who planned to harvest your dust and torture you as some sort of freaky beacon to get your fairy mother to show up and extract the Souldagger for its own weird demonic purposes.

To Fred, she said, "Well, she really only asked as a favor to me. I was in the hospital after someone beat me up and broke my wings and--you know what, this is sounding like a pity party and I don't want to bring everyone down. The point is, Dazzler's fun, concerts are fun, and do we ever have any here? I went to a place on New Year's Eve that had music and that was nice, but it wasn't exactly a concert."

"Well, that's what I'm saying, Fred. You go see one of those shows, you expect pot. You go to a Dazzler show, and you know that thing might get a little weird. It's like one of those things that's in the price of the ticket. You don't go if that's not what you want, and it's not like you don't know what's going to happen, cause all your friends have gone to see her rock out and they come back telling you what an awesome time they had."

Annie didn't know if Fred got to a lot of concerts or what, but that's how they'd always worked for her.

"Sounds like a bad evening." Annie agreed with Megan. There wasn't really any way her own powers could be used against her, but if she'd had something like Megan's dust, it would have been her worst nightmare to have it reversed on her. Even if it wasn't a horrible trip, you were supposed to be immune to your own powers just for that reason.

"I haven't seen any concerts since I've been here. But Fred's been here longer, maybe she can answer that better."

Fred gave them a slight smile. Her head tilted as she looked between them.

"I'm not against drugs. Not exactly, but people should know where their funtimes come from." She smiled a little more before she turned her attention to to the camera, in thought more than anything.

"You got out of it. This is a good thing." She looked up at Megan, smiling in a strange understanding way perhaps. Fred believed people could do so much when they had to. Or at least the ones worth anything did. "And don't worry about the pity party. Think we all have some baggage...well, most of us. Pretty certain anyway...no."

Fred's mind finally caught up with the question. "No, but! There's an opera house! And a dance troupe! So, no.." The smile faded a little. "I haven't been to a concert in a while, and I was taken from my life to here before I got to see my first real ballet. No music that I didn't make myself five years before that. So, we may be due a concert."

"With a little help from my friends," she said to Fred and Annie, grinning again. The smile wilted just a degree. "And my mother."

She changed the subject, glad to be talking of anything else, but especially concerts and dancing and actual fun stuff. "Dance? Really? What kind, do you know? I don't know ballet or anything like that, but if there's some kind of modern dance thing that could be interesting. And I've never been to an opera before. Or do they just call it an opera house but really they just put on regular plays there? We should look into that. Maybe we'll get lucky and some sort of famous musician will get sucked in next." Except she grimaced and clapped her one hand over her mouth as soon as she realized what she'd said. "That was horrible. I'm sorry."

"I'm pretty sure the Opera House does a bit of everything." Annie ducked behind the counter for a moment, searching through a bunch of stuff that she'd stuck back there to get sorted. Then hadn't sorted it, of course. She popped back up holding a flyer.

"There, see?" It was a pretty thing, all fancy and attractive to the eye. She slid it across the counter for Fred and Megan to see. She hadn't looked into the place beyond this, though, because she wasn't really sure it was her kind of thing.

"I know the feeling of hoping you'll see somebody you know and then thinking about how selfish that is, considering what this place is. But it's gotten better since I've made friends." Annie laughed a bit. "Of course, it's been a lot easier to make friends here than it's ever been in my whole life."

"I know the manager, I think he's the manager. He is kind of handsy, but not in the bad way. I think he might touch the wrong person, and he'll get a whallop." Fred nodded then sighed softly. That had been one of Jensen's and hers arguments. The last one maybe. Stupid boys.

"I have had people I knew here. They left. It's kind of sad when they go, but then you just keep moving on. You can't stay still or you die, kind of like sharks but in a much nicer way." She laughed softly.

"But, I know there's going to be ballet at the Opera House, and there might be actual opera there. Who knows. But they had auditions..." She motioned to Annie's flyer. "It is very nice making friends here." Yes, she was going back and forth between subjects, smiling.

"Well, ladies, I am gonna get going. Annie, let me know what you can find. And, I'll take any heat if someone gets miffy about your being in the system. I don't think they will. Who knows what we can find once we get it all figured out." She didn't ask the one question she really wanted to ask; she wouldn't. Not yet. She didn't know if the information that was lost could be recalled or even duplicated. She wanted to ask, to know, but she'd just let it be. For now.

Megan leaned in to look at the flyer. "Oh, that's pretty. Flyer like that, you know they're classy. Plus the whole opera thing."

She grinned at Fred. "It was nice meeting you. If you want, I could burn some music for you. I don't think Ali has to worry much about royalties from this place."

Annie smiled at Fred. "I'll let you know as soon as I can." She didn't know just what she was getting into, but she was fairly certain it'd still be a good sight sooner than would be expected.

She looked at the flyer again, then at her friends. "Maybe we can arrange a night to go check out what they've got."

"Oh, that'd be great." Fred smiled at Megan, very glad that she wasn't leaving on such a down/uncomfortable note. They were good girls after all.

"Just let me know when." She meant that for both of them. "Thanks again, both of you. I'll see you round. Tacos and waffles are on me!" It was almost a triumphant announcement before she waved and showed herself out. She left feeling productive, a little old but productive.
