Pizza Day in the Park (Toot)
His encounter with Lestat had left him wondering. He had not seen the other vampire since to ask him if there had been changes in his own life. Eric had not discovered any new powers himself yet. It would make him very angry if he'd done all that and gone through the pathetic and annoying moments of lust for nothing.

He supposed he was going to have to test things.

If he was going to test things, he would need Baba there, just in case. Not to mention, she would probably have better ideas of what to test.

For now, though, he was taking another day just for the sun. Things were back to normal, it seemed. As normal as normal could get in this place, anyway. There had been no threats to his person, despite what Baba had told him, and he hadn't been able to happen upon Hank himself to ask or explore other options.

In his stroll through the park, Eric discovered a strange thing. There seemed to be a celebration going on, complete with a temporary pizza cart. There was a big, but portable oven, and a counter on wheels. The crowd seemed to be excited by this, as there were many of them crushed up in a haphazard line. Pizza in the park. It was amazing the things that humans found fun.

He began to turn toward it, to get closer to the crowd to observe them.

There was another entity sneaking toward the crowd that day, but not to watch the people. No. This two-foot-tall, winged being hovered nearby, cloaked in glamour so as not to be noticed, but his attention was fixed solely on the pizza cart, and its glorious contents. Fresh, yeasty crust; greasy melted cheese, and delectable tomato sauce...there was just something about it that was addictive to the overgrown pixie. Or maybe it was just the MSG.

Either way, he had a one-track mind, and wasn't really paying attention to the fact that there was something otherworldly approaching the crowd, besides him.

Eric stood in the crowd, listening to the people talk. He felt something strange nearby, but none of the humans he was looking at seemed to be the ones radiating the strangeness. It felt familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on it.

Alert, Eric kept his gaze drifting over the sea of faces, looking for somebody he knew, or something he had encountered previously.

Waiting until the pizza man had his back turned, Toot-toot swooped in, and snatched up a slice of pizza--darting back to the branches of a nearby tree to devour his prize. There may or may not have been a blur of silvery-purple light in his wake, and shimmering around him as he consumed the pizza with near hedonistic pleasure. If one looked closely, one might notice that he carried an plastic-cased box-cutter that bore the words, pizza or die.

It caught Eric's eye, that disappearing pizza followed by the light. He was able to track it, following first with just his eyes, and when it seemed to be still, moving in it's direction.

As he drew closer, the scent came to him. There was no pizza to cover it now, and nobody around to distract him from it. Fairy. Eric stopped as he got within a couple of feet.

Not the same fairy.

This one was a full blooded creature.

Two. There were two here. A young female mix breed and this one. This full blooded, morsel that he could see and not quite see all at the same time.

"Show yourself." Eric's voice was low and gritty when he said it. The memory of the girl's smell and what she had done to him sprang back clearly into his mind. The way he had felt the day after faded away until he could barely hold onto it.

The polevoi twitched, realizing too late that he had been careless. His stomach always seemed to get him into trouble, but pizza was practically addictive to the lesser fae--at least in his world. Maybe it was something about the tomato being a member of the nightshade family. He'd never really thought about it. All he knew was that it was that pizza was to die for.

He just hoped this time it wouldn't be literally.

Drawing his box-cutter, he protracted the blade, and brandished it with all the menace he knew how as he dropped his glamour. His eyes flashed, and his wings buzzed like oversize dragonfly wings, his hair an unruly nimbus of purple-auburn in the light of his own aura--and he let out a defiant curse in Russian.

He knew vampire when he saw, heard, smelt, and felt one--but this one didn't seem like either the White, Red, or Black court. At least not solely. More like some strange hybrid of the lot. Which meant that Toot was probably in way over his head--but since when had that ever stopped him? "You don't want to mess with me!"

Eric looked at the tiny creature. He had not tried to judge size beyond that glow, but what he was seeing now caused a smile to twitch briefly at the corner of his mouth. It couldn't be more than maybe two feet. He was absolutely towering over the fairy.

His eyes fell on the boxcutter.

"No. Not in the way you're thinking of, I don't." He agreed. Eric didn't want to harm the fairy at all. But the smell had begun to take it's hold on him. The sweet scent of fairy. The sight of the wings, the wildness of the hair. It all came together to tell his senses what he was near. Memories flooded. He could recall the taste of the blood now, which he had not quite gotten to with the girl.

"You are a full blooded fairy." He said. "I have not seen one of you in hundreds of years. Did you know there's a little mixed blood around here?"

At two feet tall, Toot was tall for a dewdrop fae--possibly the tallest of his kind. He was athletically built, with the proportions of a young man in his prime, and of course quite handsome, but to mortal eyes, he was only the size of a small child. This could be handy, when he wanted to go about unnoticed, but if he noticed how much the vampire towered, he certainly didn't show it. He held to the philosophy of Jedi Master Yoda that 'Size matters not.'

Unfurling his wings, but keeping the weapon in hand, he rose into the air and hovered closer to eye-level with the larger man. The vampire was not quite as tall as Harry Dresden, and there were many fae that were much, much bigger than either of them.

"I've met her," he said. He felt somewhat protective of the girl, even if he didn't know her very well. She was a friend of Rufio's, and Rufio was a friend of his. "We don't exactly like to advertize our presence to mortals."

Of course they had met. It seemed impossible to imagine, now that it had been stated, that the two hadn't run into one another. The City had many things, but it's borders were not endless.

"I am far from mortal." Eric told the fairy. The fairy who was now at eye level with him. Putting the scent of the creature that much closer. He closed his eyes, taking a moment to try to center himself, and to take in the aroma all at the same time. It was a difficult mix for him.

His ears focused on the sound of blood rushing through veins. He had to open his eyes again to make it stop.

"She's lovely." Eric looked the boy over again. A boy that was quite possibly older than he was, the way that fae worked. "As are you."

"That's what you think," the fae retorted, all but rolling his eyes. Most vampires, no matter how long-lived, had been human once upon a time. And everything that had a beginning had an end. If the sun went supernova and consumed the planet, that would probably do the trick. But that was beside the point.

The point was, Toot would probably rather the vampire admire him from afar. "You haven't seen me on a bad day."

Eric supposed that in the eyes of the fae, who had been around much longer than he had in general, he might look like a young and foolish thing that was going to die eventually. He supposed that he could let go of that argument, for now.

He had little doubt in his head that this particular fairy knew exactly what he was. The girl hadn't, he knew, at least not at first. It was possible she'd figured it out after he showed fang and went after her. But she hadn't had the power of the full blood to back her up.

"I don't need to see you on a bad day." His smile was lazy. "On your worst day you would look like the best thing alive to my eyes."

This particular fae had experience with vampires, and--believe it or not--with things much bigger, stronger, and meaner than vampires. Maybe he was just lucky, but foolish or careless as the diminutive man might be, he had lived to tell about it.

"Alive is good," he said, thinking that he'd like to keep it that way. "Are you just going to stare at me all night, or were you planning to introduce yourself?"

"It could go either way." But he realized that if he didn't say something about himself, he might lose the fairy altogether. There weren't many that he'd met in this place that were willing to dance around in conversation without names being exchanged.

"I am Eric Northman." He said, finally, his gaze still hard upon the creature before him. Eric thought that he could just watch the fairy all day. If the pink haired one were here too, that would just make him completely satisfied with life. They could play together, romp, maybe.

He had to jolt himself back out of the brief fantasy.

"And you are?"

"Erik Northman." The polevoi retracted the diminutive stinger that was his box-cutter's blade, committing the name to memory. The touch of cold steel might be anathema to faeries, but it wouldn't do much good against a vampire unless he was very lucky. But now he had something of Erik Northman's that the vampire did not have of his.

Silly vampire. Toot was not about to give out his true Name and thereby give the vampire the power to summon him at will; but he might substitute some less powerful word, by which one might address him. "I am called Toot-toot."

"Toot-toot?" That broke Eric out of the moment a little bit. "Really?"

He couldn't imagine what this creature could have done to end up with such an unfortunate name. The only times he'd heard the term 'toot' used was when humans were referring to train whistles or the sound that wind made coming out of their bottoms.

Eric watched the fairy - Toot-toot - put away his weapon. He wondered if he'd thought it would actually do any good.

"So, fairy. I know what you are and you know what I am. Yet you would rather stand and fight than flee."

Well, the little man did like to toot his own horn, as the saying went. Small package, big brass...that sort of thing. "Like it or lump it," he said, his jaw jutting stubbornly. It was the only name that he was giving out.

"I've stood against bigger, scarier things than you," he said, "When it's the Right Thing to do."

Eric shook his head. "Bigger and scarier, perhaps. But how can you be so certain that I'm the same sort of thing you've faced in your own world?"

He had no idea if vampires were anything like him where this fairy came from. But Eric knew for certain that fairies weren't the same as this one in his world. The smell, that was the same. But the small stature? The wings? Those were different. He didn't even know if the blood would be the same, though he really wanted to find out.

"Either you are truly very brave, or incredibly stupid." It wasn't an insult directed at Toot-toot, just a fact.

"I never said you were," Toot countered, arching his brows. "Not all vampires are created equal, even in my world. Neither are all faeries." Field sprites like himself were generally counted among the Lesser Fae. The Sidhe, the High Elven, now those were some truly powerful--and beautiful, and terrible--beings, many of whom were much older, and much more frightening than a thousand-year-old vampire.

"If you do something stupid and live to tell about it," he said, paraphrasing something Harry Dresden had once said to an apprentice, "Then you get to call it bravery." Two sides of the same coin. "You, though...you are obviously elf-struck."

Eric appreciated the saying. It made a lot of sense and he could apply it to many things he'd seen. Perhaps not the things that Bill the Human had done, because those really were just incredibly stupid.

"Elf-struck?" Eric shook his head to indicate that he had no idea what the term meant. "If you mean my current state of attraction to you, it's your smell. Fairies are intoxicating to vampires where I come from. Just the scent of you can cause reactions in us."

"Elf-struck," the fae echoed. "It's like...being high on glamour." Perhaps a simplistic explanation, but it would get the point across. Erik's own description only confirmed that--and heaven help Erik Northman if he ever met one of the Sidhe.

"It can be intoxicating to mortals as well. Makes them do stupid things," he said, a little imperiously, "The Sidhe would use that to their advantage."

"There is no advantage for your kind in the way that I'm talking about." Eric was half warning the fairy, he knew - especially given the encounter with the pink haired girl - that he could do almost anything. He had, he thought of it now with extreme shame, played fetch with the girl's shoe, just to be around her. He had kept himself from the most extreme action, but barely. Doing that was much, much harder around Toot-toot and his full blooded musk.

"Where I come from, fairies have been driven toward extinction by vampires. It's said that some still survive, but not in the numbers they once held, and they certainly come nowhere near us."

The two he'd met here in the City were the closest he'd gotten to any fairy in at least a hundred years. Maybe more. He'd tasted them in his life, and had all the same issues with stopping at just a sip that every vampire had. It was impossible to do so without the interjection of another party. Even then, unless it was somebody strong enough to separate the two and keep them apart, there was still risk.

"Take care that you never bleed when I'm around."

If the fae in Erik's world were mostly changelings of mixed blood, with no knowledge of how to used what power they had, then no wonder they were so near to extinction. Toot was fairly certain that Eric would be no match for Queen Mab, or Titania, but Mab and Titania were not here. He was. He did not have their power, and the tall vampire was easily three times his size.

He decided that discretion was the better part of valor.

"You say that as if I'll ever let you find me again."

"I felt you before you showed yourself." Eric offered. "I know your smell now. There's only two of you here, you stand out."

He closed his eyes, distracted by the wings and everything else this fairy had to offer. He wanted very much to just grab onto an arm and latch in with his fangs. He was one of very few vampires that he knew with the self control he had.

"I'm not trying to threaten you." He said, his voice soft and strained. "I'm trying to make sure that I am not personally responsible for the extinction of fairies here in the City. I enjoy what you are, having your scent around me. I don't wish for you or the pink haired girl to be in any danger. When I say that you should take care to not bleed around me, I mean that I don't know if I would have such control if your blood was in the open."

Eric opened his eyes. "The girl has a dust that makes me docile. I don't think that's what she expected it to do. Maybe docile isn't quite the right word." He thought of his insistence about her sweater, the way he had followed her. Wanted to roll in her clothing. "If you talk to her, perhaps she can explain it better."

He stopped breathing, stopped taking in the fairy smell, it was becoming too much. "Your scent is stronger than hers is. Full blooded fairies attract us much quicker and are in more danger. I am the only vampire from my world here at this moment, except for the dancers in my club, but they are all young. Stay away from Fangtasia nevertheless."

Any who knew him might be stunned by the amount of information and helpfulness he was giving to the fairy, but he truly did not want to see them gone.

Toot-toot just laughed. Ask the half-pixie to explain something she herself didn't even understand? No. Meghan wouldn't be explaining anything. She was the one who was full of questions for Toot. He moved backward a bit, and rested on a tree branch, like a child on a swing. He tucked his wings behind his back.

"I have no reason to hang around Fangtasia, Eric Northman," he said. He wouldn't say 'thank you.' It was against fae culture, and implied that one owed someone a favor. But that didn't mean he wouldn't take advantage of the information. "I'm not that stupid."

"Good." The younger vampires that he'd hired to work weren't as controlled as he was.

Eric wondered if Lestat had similar reactions to the fairy, or if he even knew they existed. Did he have experience with them from his own world? It was a question that Eric had never thought to ask.

"You are very distracting." He couldn't remember what he'd come out for today. If anything. He just knew that he wanted this fairy more than he had the girl. It was very difficult to stand his ground and not move closer to the tree.

"Perhaps you should run along before something happens that I cannot control." He forced his eyes off of the boy when he felt his fangs pop. "I would go myself, but I think if I move it will just be in your direction."

"Very well," Toot replied, retracting the blade of his box cutter again--which had popped out just a fraction of a second after Eric's fangs. He resolved to add a pointy stick to his arsenal in the very near future, in case any other vampires caught his scent, and decided to be less polite than the former sheriff of area five.

"I like my ichor where it is."

And he vanished with a twinkle of purple light.
