We're Not in Wonderland Anymore (Zatanna)
There was only one thing Hatter was completely sure of. He wasn't in Wonderland.

He knew that place better than most anyone, perhaps even better than its royalty. The royals couldn't possibly know the underground the way he did, the back alleys and the traps and the outer forests. As a kid on the run, he'd learned the slums of the cities in and out, and as he grew into the smooth talking conman, he'd learned the city proper. And finally, as a member of the Resistance, he'd learned the secret hideouts, the places for people to go who wanted out from under the Queen's eye. This? Was definitely not Wonderland.

But it certainly wasn't what he'd been expecting when he'd gone through the Looking Glass, either. If this was Alice's New York, he wasn't sure he liked it. He'd read about it in the books in the Great Library, and he didn't recognize anything. Either it had changed drastically since the book had been published (as getting Oyster books to their world wasn't really on the agenda of the Queen), or he'd somehow ended up somewhere else. Occasionally he'd ask questions of passing people, but he was admittedly loathe to trust most people and had reverted to his old ways of hiding in alleys and stealing scraps of food where they could be found.

He was, possibly, one of the only people in the City who had no idea that it wasn't how it was supposed to be. It looked normal to him, and so he ran with it. After all, he'd dealt with some ridiculous and strange things in a city that shouldn't even have existed to the Oysters. Why would this place be any different?

Still. He'd come such a long way from the boy he'd been, always hiding, always on the run, never using a 'real' name. He had to suck it up and deal with this. If he was in the wrong place, he'd have to work on finding a way back. And he wouldn't know if he didn't get out there. When he found himself in front of the library, he felt a little better. Books were easy to get answers from, right? They'd never let him down before. He'd just head in there. Easier than putting his trust in a person, Oyster or otherwise.

Zee was tickled absolutely pink! She didn't care if everyone else in the City was freaking out about having to cook their own meals, pick up after themselves. She could teleport again! Since the streets no longer switched around willy nilly there was no more potential to pop into someone's shower (ahem), in front of trucks or possibly a wall. As soon as she figured that out she was teleporting everywhere!

She'd seen the off handed request for her "so called vigilante group" to do something about this, but Jack hadn't seen fit to contact them and nertz to him anyway. Big stupid mayor! So that would be a no, she hadn't forgiven him yet, and she wasn't planning on it until he apologized, even if just to her.

Today she was just randomly popping in and out of places as the whim took her. The one place she hadn't been to yet was the City Library. She honestly hadn't been able to find it before now. Her working theory was that the City felt she had enough of a library in Shadowcrest and was keeping her from its own library. Well to hell with that! She took advantage of this whole stand still and appeared right at the front door of the library with the full intent of seeing what sort of mystical section it had, if any.

Little did she realize that her teleporting ways might still startle the hell out of the innocent bystander.

She might not have startled all innocent bystanders. Maybe some were used to that sort of thing, magic and superpowers and all. But Hatter's knowledge of magic was limited. He wasn't prepared by any means to have a woman, beautiful though she may be, appear directly in front of him.

This? Was why he should have just stuck to the alleys. What a load of crap. The yelp he gave was neither masculine nor dignified. In fact, it was somewhere between eight year-old girl and little old man being attacked.

"Seriously... I.... What... Are you real?" Okay, not the most normal of questions to ask. But he was from a land where she might just be an illusion, or he could be drugged up on some tea that he'd had no intention of taking or...or...something. Anything. Because meeting someone with that kind of power would just be a whole new level of weird for him.

Hey in this place it was a pretty valid question so while she wasn't surprised by the question, she did look contrite for scaring the bejeepers out of someone.

"Oh! Geez." She grimaced a bit of a smile at the poor guy. "Sorry. Didn't mean to pop right up in your dance space there." She chuckled apologetically and shrugged. "But yeah. I'm real. Hi."

She gave a meek kind of wave and hoped she wasn't about to get punched because that would just be her luck. Thankfully she wasn't in costume so no fishnets and top hat to immediately get her arrested for being an outlaw.

Punching was high on Hatter's list of things to do, but then fought to think logically. If she could appear and disappear, what else could she do? Though everyone who knew him knew you didn't want to go one on one with those fists, she obviously had the added bonus of...something. A power of some sort, one he'd never seen before. He should think this through first. Or at least not get himself charmed or magic-ed out of there.

"Um. Hi." No. This wasn't Alice's New York. He knew Oysters didn't have magic powers. Did they? No, of course not, that would be ridiculous. "No, it's okay. I didn't... It's not like you landed on me or anything." Though on second glance, that might not have been so bad. Hell, if he was stuck in this weird place, ought to make it worth it, right? "I uh... I've just never seen anything like that is all."

Smooth talking men weren't so smooth talking out of their comfort zones, okay? "I'm David," he offered, reverting to the Oyster name he'd chosen to give the few people who'd approached him so far. The fewer people who knew who he really was, the better. And he'd always liked the name in the books he'd read, so why not?

It's not like you landed on me or anything. Zee restrained herself from rolling her eyes wryly. She was trying to curb her landing on strange men habit, or in front of their trucks. Maybe she should rethink this teleporting thing even though the City was staying still. Drat!

She chuckled for the stammering. Honestly, he was doing better than some people when she just magicked herself around. "Nice to meet you, David. I'm Zatanna." She smiled with a shrug. "Guys I scare a year off their life can call me Zee."

In Hatter's defense, stammering was a somewhat natural reaction when faced with shock. And, well, what else would you call it? Still, he was trying to recover as quickly as possible. This was new and different and not something he should have been dealing with but there it was.

"What if you only scared six months off of me?" he asked slyly, tipping his hat to her. Literally. Because he was, as always, wearing a hat on top of the unruly mop of hair. Good thing Zee wasn't in costume, or he was going to think he'd met a soulmate of some sort.

"So...since you did nearly trample me with...magic, was it?" he questioned, trying to look smooth and easy going instead of panicked. "Maybe you could give me a hand here?" She seemed nice enough. She even had a great smile, which was nice. Maybe she'd know what the hell mess he'd gotten himself into.

Oh gods he was adorable! Zee was charmed already. Honestly, that wasn't hard to do, but the hat thing was just charming! She grinned with her blue eyes dancing and chuckled. "Just six months I guess you can come up with your own nickname for me, as long as it isn't 'hey bitch'."

At the request for assistance she smiled and tilted her head in curiosity. "Sure! Or rather, I can try." Things could get weird in this City and she wasn't going to just assume something just because the streets were staying put. "What can I help you with?"

Hatter hated to trust anyone. He really did. Too many times being betrayed, or being hurt, or just having that trust thrown back at him. But he really did need answers. The fact that the pretty brunette had nearly killed him (well, she could have!) meant she owed him now. Right? Well, close enough. Whatever, he was desperate.

"Wouldn't happen to know where I am? I think I got a bit lost." It was admitting a weakness, something Hatter was terrible at doing. He'd worked too long and too hard to get where he was to let anyone think anything fazed him. Even then, at what was a fairy vulnerable moment, he was smiling adoringly, as if this woman had hung the moon and he was grateful to her for it. At that point he'd do anything if it got him answers as to why the Looking Glass hadn't worked for him. Why him? It worked fine for everyone else!

He turned to glance back at the library for a brief moment and then shook his head. "I was actually headed in there to find out. You know, general information. If you don't have time or you're busy or something, that's totally okay."

Stars above she could just hug him! Poor guy. Hearing that she guessed he just got here. He got lucky for showing up during a time when the City was behaving like just a City instead of an entity with the sense of humor of a bored fifteen year old.

"Ah," she said with an understanding and sympathetic smile. "Just got here? Yeah, I don't think the library would really give you much information on the truth of this place since its the City's library. But I'll be happy to tell you what I know."

Just? Well, no, not really just. But she was close enough to earn a half-hearted little smile from Hatter. "Ah, yeah, kind of. A couple of days ago." Which meant he had no idea how weird the City was behaving. It looked normal to him, for someone from a city that was also pretty weird.

She seemed kind enough about it so maybe that meant he wasn't entirely crazy. Or, at least, she didn't think he was. "So...I'm just guessing I haven't wound up in New York, then." He bit his lower lip briefly, trying not to look as anxious and uncomfortable as he felt. He'd dealt with lousy situations before. He'd deal with this, too.

"No. Sorry." She was beginning to get the impression he was pretty upset, possibly scared and she made it worse with her teleporting in front of him. Gleep!

She gave him a sympathetic smile, her head tilting. "You hungry? We could grab a bite and I'll explain things. My treat."

Oh, sweet suits. He was pretty sure she outright pitied him. Was he really that pathetic looking at the moment? Brilliant. Simply brilliant. And ordinarily, he'd never let a lady pay. Even at his worst, that was just low. Not to mention a blow to the ego.

But then, he didn't really have a choice. And a meal with a beautiful woman who may have the answers he needed sounded like a fair idea. Or a brilliant one, if he was being honest. She wasn't Alice, she wasn't the girl he'd crossed worlds for, but he did need help and though he was proud, he wasn't too proud to admit that. "Ah. Yeah. Sure, that'd be all right." And it sure beat hunting for scraps.

Pitied? Gods, no. Sympathetic. With all her being! At least he wasn't about to get arrested for disturbing the peace as he shouted at his stupid house which had locked him out in his pajamas. Ahem.

"Cool." She beamed a smile at him and headed for the stairs of the library. "Now your choices are what kind of food do you want, and do you want to walk or see what teleporting is like?" She's pretty sure she knows the answer to the last part.

Hatter's face went a bit blank as she suggested teleporting. Oh, it sounded fascinating, sure. But terrifying. And too many new things at once didn't appeal to him at all. Oh, sure, if questioned he'd consider himself brave enough. He could certainly fight his way out of a corner, or at least go out kicking and punching if he couldn't. But that didn't mean he couldn't be overwhelmed by two days of pure insanity.

"I uh...how about an IOU on the teleporting thing?" he offered, shifting his weight from foot to foot. "As for what...you'll find I'm hardly a picky eater. Most anything is fine with me." Oh, he'd developed a taste for fine things. Years of living in the lap of luxury and being held in a high regard helped. But that didn't mean he didn't remember his roots. Not that he'd tell Zee that. She didn't need to know. No one did. Hatter had worked long and hard to put that past behind him. No need to revisit it.

She chuckled with a wrinkle of her nose. "I wasn't really expecting you to take me up on the teleport thing so no worries." One of these days she'd get someone to try it out. Granted she was feeling a bit tetchy these days and she thought about talking Dean into it, after getting him sloshy drunk, then leaving him on Jack's lawn to puke. Hmm...maybe John Constantine really was a bad influence on her.

"Pizza it is then!" She beamed a smile with a nod as if to punctuate the decision then chuckled again. "C'mon. There's this great little place with a crabby old Italian man running it, but the pies are to die for!" She grinned then started down the stairs.

"It sounds brilliant, really..." And it did. But that didn't mean he wanted to screw with his head anymore than it already was! Hadn't he been through enough lately? Honestly! "It's still amazing, though, absolutely amazing."

Pizza! Now there was something he knew. Well, knew of, at least. It wasn't exactly a regular food in Wonderland and all the books and things talked about it. It sounded like a good idea. "Are all Italian men crabby?" he questioned, not realizing quite how naive he sounded as he followed her. She was fun, he'd give her that. He could see himself trying to keep up with her. And probably failing, which would be entirely new for him. But not horrible. "I guess it doesn't matter as long as the food is good, right?". Good but too slow recovery. "I've dealt with some terrible customer service. As long as he doesn't shoot at us, I think we're okay."

"That's probably a very good question, but it probably has to do with Italian women, I'm sure." She made a face then chuckled with a toss of her hair. She wasn't Italian, but eastern European women were about as bad. "He won't shoot us more than dirty looks. Me for being unmarried and not pumping out babies, and he'd probably see you as some punk who is no better than you ought to be." She giggled and winked at him.

She kept up the idle blathering until they'd gotten to the pizza place, got the looks from the old man as she predicted but they got their slices, her with her pepperoni and a diet coke. Once they were a few bites into it then she got to the meat of what he was after.

"So. This is the City. That's its name. No real name that I could find out. You kind of just appear here and from everything I can tell we're trapped." She shrugged, not looking all together that happy about it. "Usually it's weirder than this. The streets change with no rhyme or reason, but for some reason that all stopped."

The giggle was slightly addictive and a sly grin crossed his face. After two days of living on the street and hiding out from most human beings, this was okay. She was nice. She was friendly. He could live with that. The shy, insecure feeling was starting to give way to his usual self and he gave her a crooked smile.

The old guy at the place was rather annoyingly glaring, but after dealing with Charlie, it was nothing Connor couldn't handle. In fact, he beamed brightly at the man as he ordered the same thing as Zee. Mostly because he figured it safe and not quite so obvious that he wasn't a local if he ordered something he knew would be okay.

He listened as she talked, trying to take it in. It wasn't that big of a blow, really. Other than ending up there when it was the last place he'd intended to go. "It's weird..." he agreed, then shrugged. "I'd been...traveling at the time. I think I originally thought this was where I was supposed to end up. Obviously, I was wrong." He lifted his eyebrows and studied her, his expression slightly amused. "You people are awfully creative. The City?"

"Hey I didn't name it." She chuckled around a bite of pizza, catching a bit of sauce with a finger at the corner of her lip. "I just ended up here with my house same as you, though you might not have a house."

But that reminded her and she hummed, holding up a finger in a wait gesture while she washed the pizza down. She wasn't exactly a dainty thing. You should see her with a cheeseburger and a beer. "Which reminds me. If the City ever goes back to normal your bank account will replenish itself every day. Your clothes get washed, house cleaned and food stocked. As it is we're all living like regular people, and I for one am not complaining."

Ha, a house. He was used to the one room living, two when he was particularly wealthy, thanks. The City should probably have more common sense then to throw too much of a dwelling at him.

The City at its 'normal' state didn't sound so bad to him. In fact, he kind of liked that idea. Lap of luxury and all. But he was used to taking care of himself, so why would he argue that? "Why would it do that? More, how does it do that?" He could see why people were so into this pizza thing. Whoever thought to put the spicy meat on the bread with the melted cheese and all that sauce was a genius! "I can't say I'd complain about not having to fight to survive, but it also seems kind of pointless. Keeping everyone lazy. What happened to it? The City, I mean."

Her brows lowered thoughtfully as she chewed on the corner of her lip for a moment then slowly shook her head as if uncertain of her answer. "I don't know. Honestly I've been afraid to investigate too closely." And if he knew the entities she'd gone up against in her time that was saying a lot. She's mouthed off to the First of the Fallen. Not as bad as John, but no one was that foolish.

Again she shook her head with a regretful smile and a shrug of her shoulders. "Not a clue." But part of her was beginning to think maybe she should investigate this in case this was permanent. Maybe people could start going home. "Normally I'd get snoopy about something like this, but to tell you the truth I'm keeping a low profile as best I can."

Apparently he'd thrown her off. Hatter hadn't meant to do that. Rather, he'd hoped it wouldn't come to that, that she would just have the answer at the ready. And, apparently, she didn't.

He regarded her thoughtfully, then gave a slight smile. Well, now she was speaking his language. "I get you there. Wanting to help and kind of not being able to? Eventually figured it out but it didn't win me many fans." His shoulders lifted in a shrug and he tasted the drink in front of him. The fizzy aspect took a second to adjust to, but he definitely enjoyed it. "Any particular reason we're keeping a low profile? Am I out and about with an outlaw?" His voice was teasing, but it wasn't like he had any room to judge!

Her eyes flashed momentarily with an irritated glint and a look of frustration was on her face. The JLC's status with the City was still a point of aggrivation to her, but it wasn't David's fault so she forced a tight smile back onto her face as she tipped an invisible hat and adopted a cheesy cowboy accent.

"Indeed you are. The honorable Mayor Jack Douchebag Heart done labeled me and mine genuine vigilantes." Her huff was part sarcastic chuckle and part wry disdain. "Obviously I have a differing opinion, but so long as I don't save anyone from anything while you're around me you should be fine."

Douchebag might've been a new word for him, but he could tell by her tone it wasn't a good one. And the rest? Hatter nearly choked on his pizza. When he finished coughing and the spinning in his head stopped, he merely stared at her. "Jack Heart? Did you say Jack Heart?" Not even Chase. Bloody bollocks in hell, really? This had to be a mistake. A really, really bad mistake.

Or else this City of theirs had the worst sense of humour ever. A sarcastic and somewhat hateful tone took over his voice. "Last I checked saving people was a good thing. Boy, you really must be mad, thinking you should save people. What is wrong with you?"

She felt bad that something she said apparently made him try to inhale his pizza. Her immediate instinct was to try to pat him on the back to help, but she knew from experience that really was no help at all so she just waited it out.

Then her brows lifted a little as she tilted her head in curiosity. "Yeah. Jack Heart. He's the mayor of the City and once upon a time he was on his way to being a good friend." Which she was still kind of upset about losing.

His sarcasm was better than hers. She approved and chuckled with a lopsided smirk. "I know, right? I should have my brain examined obviously, and you haven't even seen the costume."

He felt the pizza shifting in his stomach and he had to stop chewing for a bit. Seriously? Who had he pissed off enough to make this nonsense happen? Oh. Right. Mostly everyone. Whatever. "That sodding git..." He rolled his eyes and released a long sigh. Now that the initial surprise and annoyance had worn off, he was just irritated. Nothing that could be done about that, though.

Mostly, his appetite was gone and he was glancing down at the table and nearly missed her smirk. He did catch it, though, and shot her an appreciative smile. "Maybe that's it. Maybe he doesn't like the costume. He's very fashion conscious, you know."

She gave a wry snort for that. She really doubted it was the costume. It was generally appreciated by most people of both genders. "Maybe." Of course the first time Jack saw her costume was in his shower when her teleportation was going wacky, but he seemed to have gotten over that.

"I take it you know him?" She tilted her head, her eyes and expression suddenly more wary but interested. David didn't seem to like Jack any more than she did right now. Possibly liked him less.

Things Hatter never wanted to hear about: Jack Heart's shower. She couldn't possibly know how grateful he was to not hear that little tidbit. But he did enjoy the fact that he'd pulled a reaction out of her with his comment.

"He's the prince, well, king where I'm from," Hatter said simply, looking as annoyed as he felt. Suits, he hated that man. The image of him interrupting what could've been a right brilliant moment with Alice was still fresh in his head. Not to mention him all but proposing to her in front of the Glass. Fool. Pompous ass. Yeah. "We don't exactly get along. He's very by-the-book, plays-by-the-rules, and so on. Even when he's against something. Probably why he's not a big fan of you vigilantes."

She couldn't remember if Jack had told her anything about where he was from, other than they didn't celebrate any sort of Christmas or Yule festival. Her mind flashed to when she'd had him to Shadowcrest and introduced him to Christmas movies, eggnog and making cottonball snowmen. It had been a happy memory briefly.

"Yeah well he could use a lesson ins what friendship is all about," she said with a bitter edge to her tone of voice. "But that does explain a lot."

Hatter planned to keep his own details about where he was from pretty quiet. He knew it didn't exist, not to the Oysters, anyway. To them, he was nothing but a character in a children's story. And it wasn't even him! That was a whole different man, an insult to hats, really. So if she didn't bring it up, he'd go on the assumption Jack hadn't either, and just go with it. Only way, really.

"He could use a lesson on a lot of things. Like how the world works. And how not to hurt people. And how not to break women's hearts. But I digress," he continued, trying to wipe the irritated look off of his face and about half succeeding. "What is it you vigilantes do, then? What's got him so ticked off?"

Jack was a touchy subject for her, slightly in the ouchy category which pissed her off. The look on her face gave truth to that as she hmphed in agreement with what David said about him.

She grasped on to the question if only to get off of the direct subject of her disagreement with Mr. Mayor, shrugging a shoulder. "Take care of things regular people can't. The one that got us in trouble was dealing with King Kong climbing buildings and taking woman hostages." She piffed in a scoffing manner. "As if the police could handle it any better."

Zee wasn't the only one grateful to not be talking about Prince Prat any longer. He found himself listening interestedly as she spoke. "King Kong?" he asked, sounding potentially ridiculous, and wasn't he supposed to be trying to blend in? Oh, well. He didn't know the answer and he couldn't even fake it.

Though he wasn't stupid, he did know taking women hostage was a bad thing. "So, what, he just wants you guys to sit back and let officials deal with things even though you're perfectly capable of helping?" Unfair. And so like Jack.

At this point nothing was surprising or ridiculous so she wasn't phased at David's seeming ignorance of what King Kong was. She gestured over her head with her hand with a bland look on her face. "Big ape. Huge. Like fifty feet tall or more." She lowered her hand back to the table. "He climbed one of the biggest buildings in the City and took a reporter hostage. We didn't have much time or choice."

She laced her fingers together on the table with a sigh and shrugged her shoulders. "Looks that way. Won't stop me though." Her smirk was a little sly, a little smug. "I want to see him put me in jail for rescuing someone."

Hatter nodded, though his eyes were wide. Apes made some sense, at least, even if the idea was completely insane. Fifty feet? "I'm guessing...fifty foot apes aren't common around here?" He was getting used to the idea that the City wasn't normal, not even for people not from Wonderland. So maybe it wouldn't be entirely ridiculous when he didn't know some things. That might not be so terrible.

And hey, if Jack was mayor, maybe people knew where he was from and Hatter wouldn't have to blend in quite so desperately. Maybe.

"Can he do that?" he questioned a moment later, studying her carefully. She really was quite attractive. The fact that she cared about the safety of others just made her someone Hatter wanted on his side in this strange new place. "Put you in jail, I mean? Just for helping people?"

She giggled as she shook her head. "Fifty foot apes aren't common anywhere." But King Kong had been the least of the things she'd seen and fought. That had actually been something of a vacation. Not that it had meant anything after Jack made his statement.

Her amusement disappeared swiftly enough though, and she shrugged a shoulder. "He could, and charge me with being a vigilante. Technically it illegal now. I'd probably get slapped with obstruction of justice, property damage...whatever they could think up."

This place was going to take some getting used to. And that was rich, coming from the guy from Wonderland, where things were topsy-turvy, so to speak, and everyone really was a bit mad. "Fifty feet...wow."

He released a slow breath and shrugged his shoulders. "Zee, you know something? I don't have the first inkling of a superpower or whatever, but I think I like you already. I like how you think. If you decide you want to fight back against the powers that be," also known as Prince Prat (he hadn't come up with a name for his majesty the king yet), "then I'll back you. May not be much good, but I throw a mean punch."

Her brows lifted for David throwing his weight behind her against Jack and his stupid stance against the League. He didn't know her really, or the whole situation, and he could get in a lot of trouble. Something told her he might be used to being in trouble, and she couldn't help but smile in approval.

She nodded. "Thanks. I appreciate that." Then her expression turned a bit sly as she winked at him with a chuckle. "The City could use more people like you I think. While the League and I are flashy, in your face someone like you could be overlooked while you get things done."

Frankly, Hatter was behind anything that Jack found appalling. But it didn't seem right, these people who were trying to help being stopped in their tracks. How was that fair? If they were truly hurting others or causing harm to the City, as it were, maybe that'd be one thing. Saving people, though? Isn't that what a good government should want?

And he was most definitely used to being in trouble. And getting out of it.

His lips turned up in a sly little grin of his own as he shrugged his shoulders. "I'm used to flitting about under the noses of my enemies," he admitted. "And I may not always like it, but I'm damn good at playing both sides."

She chuckled with a wrinkle of her nose. "Oh I don't think we'll ask you to play double agent. First of all I've never done that and I get first dibs."

Hatter laughed, then. A real laugh, though quieter than he might have usually. It was something at least. Considering the events of his last few days, it was a pretty impressive something. "Trust me, it's not something most people want to do. And it helps more if you can blend in." He eyed her, a hint of a grin on his lips. "Why can't I see you managing to blend?"
