Prowling for Foodstuffs (Open)
Beast woke up in the a quiet, lightly wooded part of the park. It was comfortable here, but something was wrong. His head lifted, emerging from beneath the blanket he'd curled under over the night. It was a good smelling blanket, but the little female it smelled like was no longer next to him like she had been when he'd passed out.

He scowled deeply, testing the air. She'd been gone for a while, and that was unsettling.

Climbing off the wooden pallet that had been his bed the creature-like man stayed on all fours, stretching out and letting a grunting snarl out as new muscles were called to duty. He felt immensely better, the pain from the night before was almost gone and he was rejuvinated. Now the only thing wrong was his stomach, and the lack of his companion from the night before.

He dropped the blanket, it smelled good and of her so he'd return here to sleep, but he had no use of it if he was going hunting. He followed where his nose hinted she might have gone, leaving the small canopy of trees and heading across the park, still on all fours. He followed her scent until a much stronger one caught his attention, and more importantly, his appetite. A delicious smell coming out of a box with wheels where a few people were gathered. Beast changed his course almost immediately, and was pleased when he didn't have to do anything to scare them off except snarl a bit. The people, one a mother with a small child, took off running, leaving him to stick his fist through the side of the flimsy glass box and get at the lovely pieces of meat roasting inside, stuffing himself full of hotdogs without worry or care about where he was or who was around him.

Eric wasn't looking for anyone in particular this time. He felt he'd covered all his bases for the most part when it came to freaking out individuals who thought he resided only in the night. At least for now. There was one more he could think of, but it was a different sort of freak out, and he wasn't quite sure he was ready to face Lestat just yet.

But he was still enjoying the daylight. Eric wasn't sure that it would ever get old. Boring. After a thousand years with no sun, he was ready to spend a thousand basking in it.

He came upon the hot dog cart just as the people who had been in line scattered. He watched them run past him, not even looking in his direction as they went. There was something there, now, and he couldn't see it, but it had piqued his interest.

Eric moved around the cart and spotted the strange thing that had clearly been the cause of the panic. He stiffened. His thoughts went automatically to the werewolf trouble everybody had just been through, including himself.

But after a moment, he narrowed his eyes. This creature, whatever it was, didn't have anything to do with the weres. Also, it was blue. Eric was fairly sure that none of the animals that had shown up due to the infection had been absurd colors.

"You don't smell of shifter or were." Eric said to the beast. "But you do smell somewhat familiar."

Beast crouched, eatting his fill and effectively gutting the cart. He scratched at his chest slightly, the thin shirt that had still clung to him was starting to be less shirt and more decorative ribbon, and he didn't like it.

The voice, accompanied by the strange new smell pulled him from his meal, and he stiffened, turning his head slightly and then letting out a low snarl.

He jumped up and onto the top of the cart, his powerful fingers and claws leaving large dents and tears in the cart. Turning, his fur stood a little straighter and he let out a warning growl, testing the air and pausing. The smell triggered something inside. Wariness, but also hatred. He straightened and then readied himself for the stranger to move, yellow eyes locked on the other like a predator sizing up his opponent.

Eric was not stupid enough to move. In fact, he stood more still than any living creature ever could. Not a muscle in his body even so much as twitched. He had, after all, just interrupted an animal in it's moment of feeding. An animal he was starting to feel as if he knew.

"There's no need for any of that." Eric's voice was low and gentle. "I won't be approaching you, or doing you any harm. I'm merely curious."

What was this thing? And how had he not run into it before?

The not moving was... confusing. Beast looked closer. There was no breath, no smell of life. Not like anything he know. But then, there wasn't much indicating death, either.

But the Beast didn't dwell on these conundrums. He wasn't a thinker, he was an animal.

He relaxed ever so slightly when the other didn't move, then snorted and jumped off the top of the cart, knocking it over out of carelessness more than intent. Landing next to the man Beast stood on his legs. It was neither natural nor unnatural for him, it was just a way on inspecting something taller than he was when he was on all fours. He leaned in, face barely an inch from Eric's, then sniffed at him.

The smell of the man was still a confusion, and was captivating his attention. He didn't know if it was an enemy, a friend, something similar to himself.... but there were other smells, too. Beings that this one had come into contact with. Beast knew those scents, but couldn't tell from where or when. He pulled back and huffed before he punched the man in the chest with enough force to shatter a human's ribcage. It wasn't full strength, and it wasn't aggressive, it was just a test from one standing being to another. He wanted to see what this man would do.

The thing before him had great power. Eric couldn't help but notice that. There was an ease to the knocking over of the hot dog cart that no normal thing would have had. It caused a greater interest to crawl through him.

Obviously, the beast was also curious about him. Eric did not flinch when they came face to face in a way that proved the creature had no sense of a personal bubble, as humans liked to call it.

But when the hit to his chest came, Eric could not help the smile that crossed his lips. If it had been a human he was facing, it would not have continued standing. As it was an animal - of some sort, Eric had no idea what it was or where it had come from - he found the gesture to be somewhat amusing. He kept still for that, as well, though, because he felt as if he were on a tightrope with the beast. He didn't want to shatter the fragile calm they were sharing. Not now, when there was still so much to find out about it.

One thing was certain, however. Eric was very glad he wasn't a human at this moment.

"Why do you seem so familiar to me? I have never seen you or anything like you before. Yet I cannot shake the feeling that I know you."

The hit actually hurt slightly, and the man didn't flinch. Definitely nothing like the people around here, who Beast could toss around without even noticing.

And there was no hit back, so no reason to get upset. Beast flexed the fingers that had just struck the other, then tilted his head. Something. Something....

His hand reached up, wrapping around Eric's neck. That felt more familiar. He gave a slight squeeze, and suddenly there was a flash of him, hanging off the same neck. Only back when he was weaker. The flash was over in an instant, but it was enough. Going with what was familiar he repeated the last gesture that his mind could reach, leaning in an nipping at the man's earlobe (never mind this time was with fangs instead of omnivore's teeth) before he turned away.

Disinterested now, Beast went back to the remains of the hot dog cart, hoping on top of them and starting to tear open what remained, looking for any left over meat. He was still hungry.

The familiar rose ranks with the hand to his neck, and skyrocketed with the nip to his earlobe. Eric needed no more clues after that. He knew exactly what... who... he was now facing. He moved enough to feel his earlobe. Where human teeth had once done nothing against his skin, here was a trace of blood from a nick that had already healed.

"Henry." Eric's amazement was not hidden. He could now see some features that had carried over, now that he knew what he was looking for. The eyes, for instance, were the same eyes.

The boy had gone from slightly odd to full on noticeably different. Eric didn't think that the time between now and the last he'd seen of him had been that long, either. Something big had happened here.

Was it science or magic?

"To say you've changed is the understatement of perhaps my entire lifetime." Eric watched the once-boy dig through the heap of the hot dog cart. "I don't think you're going to find anything substantial in there. Perhaps you would like some real meat? There's a butcher shop around the corner. Since the City has apparently stopped moving, I believe it's still there."

Beast took no more notice of him when he spoke. Baba had done the speaking thing too, none of it meant anything to Beast.

He took the cart apart with ease, then let out a growl of frustration, getting off it and slamming it with his fist, sending it sailing across the feild. He looked at it with bored interest, glancing at Eric before snorting and turning heading across the street without direction. The cars that didn't stop or honked got angry snarls from him, but otherwise he didn't pay much attention to his surroundings.

Other than the man behind him, nothing here was a threat to him, and when he wasn't confused or in pain he wasn't that concerned with the pieces or metal or little people running about.

It was pure chance that he was headed towards the butcher shop Eric had just mentioned.

With a sigh that wasn't particularly normal for him, or required due to breathing, Eric followed at what he deemed to be a safe distance. The animal was stronger than the boy had been, faster, and had fangs and claws. He had felt the power behind the punch and knew it hadn't been the full force he could have been given. He wasn't really in the mood to find out just what the beast could dish out.

He was glad to see that it was heading toward the butcher shop, though. Getting some real food into the animal might be a good first step to getting it to sit and think for a moment, instead of being pure reaction and instinct. Eric had no illusions that he could transform the beast back into the boy, but he had to at least try to get it to talk if it could do such a thing.

He had so many questions he wanted answered.

Careful to edge around what he thought might be the potential reach of the beast, Eric moved to direct it more toward the source of meat.

"Go that way, Henry." He said, gesturing. "You want food, that way has food." Eric could see this particular game getting old fast. He hoped that the need to eat would overcome any shiny objects that might distract.

Beast continued on, ignoring the other man. When he gestured he got a dirty look in return, the same look any cat owner would expect when trying to order a house tabby off the dining room table.

With the same indifference Beast continued walking past the shop, only stopping when the door opened and the smell wafered out with a customer leaving with a bag of meat. He stopped, then turned, watching her leave down the road, too absorbed in her phone to notice the animal watching her. He hopped over to the door, yanking it open and then inhaling deeply. There was a cry of surprise from one of the patrons inside, and Beast gave a scowl. He leapt up on the counter and let out a deafening roar, one that was a far cry more primal and full bodied than the one Eric had heard before. One that did it's job easily, sending all of the patrons and employees screaming and scrambling from the shop.

Pleased that the good smelling place was now his own, Beast turned and hopped up behind the counter and to the displays. This was indeed better, there was much more meat here and it wasn't too hot to touch, or spinning around in little bits and pieces. There was almost proper siezed slabs here.

Eric shook his head and tried to determine why it was that people enjoyed keeping pets. He was already finding it impossible and more work than it should have been.

Once more, he walked past fleeing people and into a space that the beast occupied. "Considering this change must be recent, I don't think you want to skip right into raw meat."

Not that, at this point, he believed the animal was going to listen to him. But he really didn't want to be held responsible for the vomit this thing could possibly expend. Half digested meat would only make that worse.

Before anything else could happen, Eric retrieved a large chunk of cooked beef and thrust it toward Henry. It was juicy and not overdone. Even the vampire could smell the blood it held past the scent of cooking. He hoped it would be a good distraction from the raw.

A fist caught the meat before it hit him, and Beast dropped the steak he'd picked up, turning and sniffing the food before giving Eric a long, searching look. Then he accepted the gift, setting into it with abandon and dropping into a more relaxed sitting position on the counter.

Without the urgency, and here in an enclosed and controlled enviroment, he stopped eating with as much urgency, ripping into the food but taking his time now.

He watched the other, wondering if he'd have some food too. There was pleanty to be had.

"Well, at least there's that." Eric crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back against the counter. He was relieved that the cooked meat had won out.

"Does Baba know about this turn of events yet?" It wouldn't surprise him in the least if she did. She had a way of knowing things. Of discovering things she'd be interested in. But if she didn't know, she needed to find out immediately.

He really was determined to get Henry to talk. Doubt was sinking in a little bit, however. This beastly version of the boy didn't seem to even respond to Eric's words in any way. Speaking seemed way out of reach, at least right now.

Beast finished the meat and then looked up. The man's sounds were... different now. Still meaningless but maybe less so.

Still, the man had intentions. Something about him was important. That much was clear. Beast leaned forward on one knee, staring at Eric for a long moment, waiting for him to make more sense.

Eric paused, thinking.

It occurred to him, then, that this one probably didn't know Baba by her true name. What name, then? He couldn't be sure.

He knew that he could describe her, but it seemed silly to try for more words right then. His questions weren't getting answered. So instead, he leaned forward as well. Arms still crossed over his chest, Eric leaned in a way that no human could have managed, bending almost in half with no effort. He inhaled deeply.

Eric smelled the earth, the hot dogs, the beef. And her. He nodded, a gesture he wasn't sure that the animal would understand.

"She knows." That was good.

Thinking, Eric leaned back again. Lost in his own thoughts for a moment, he tossed Henry a nearby rack of ribs to keep him occupied for a moment, while Eric considered the next move. And also to consider that he may have revealed a name to Henry that Baba wouldn't appreciate, and hope that the animal had not connected anything.

Beast caught the ribs as well, but this time noticed his hand as he did so. He froze, staring at it because something was different this time. Something was wrong. He was looking at something blue and furry, but his brain was telling him something else was supposed to be there. A hand more like Eric's.

He dropped the ribs, pulling the hand back, then blinked as he looked over at Eric again. Looking harder. His mind was suddenly confused, noting new things that weren't from his senses. He noted the meat that he'd disturbed and soiled, now noting that they were unsellable. He saw the empty store and knew there were supposed to be people there. He turned, seeing his reflection in the metalic side of the display cooler. But it wasn't his reflection.

He felt his heart sieze up for a moment, and he turned sharply, seeing Eric again.

Eric. The vampire. A threat, a menace, a.... a vampire.

He looked again to the window, seeing the sunlight out there. And Eric was in here, sitting in the sunlight, just fine.

"A nightmare. It's another nightmare," he said quietly, voice ragged and a little bit alien. He pulled back and then turned away, closing his eyes. Another nightmare. Probably induced by the serum. Maybe he was dying, even, and this was that kind of dream.

Eric was pulled from his thoughts by the voice. He really hadn't expected that to happen at all. He'd been trying to figure out how to get Henry back to a place where he could be watched and kept safe. Herding him hadn't seemed to work so well, and picking him up didn't seem like a safe option. It would be seen as aggression.

Of course, none of this mattered anymore, did it?

"I'm afraid not." Eric answered. "What you're experiencing is real. I don't know what you've done to yourself, but this is an extreme change."

He didn't move from his spot, however. He didn't think Henry was going to bolt on him just yet. Not that he was looking forward to that chase, so he hoped bolting was off the table altogether.

"What's the last thing you recall?" Eric wasn't going to question the new vocal ability of the lad, he was going to utilize it while it was available. Who knew if Henry would revert.

Hank hadn't expected Eric to answer. At least, not in that way. That wasn't how his nightmares usually went. Though being blue was a new one, too.

He stood up, frowning. He was a little tall feeling.

"You'll pardon me not taking the word of a vampire sitting in a sun patch," he growled, carefully looking anywhere but at his own body. It wasn't working, the outline of his eyes was blue, too.

His breathing quickened, and though he tried he felt his aggitation levels rising. "Where's Red, then? She's usually here. Or Hannibal." He turned and in a flash of rage (or was it panic?) slammed his fist into the cooler display, shattering it and decimating the selves inside. That felt a bit better, but only for a moment. He started to pace, closing his eyes and trying to wake himself up, but he was still having a hard time focusing. The feral mind wasn't just going away, it was still there, noting the smells and sights and reacting to the human emotions. He hated these kinds of dreams. "It doesn't matter what happened in life. Either I'm dying or just very sick. It won't affect here."

Eric looked down at himself, and sure enough, he'd picked the spot with a good deal of sunlight. It was getting to be a habit. He smiled.

"I can see where that might throw you off. I've had some of my own changes recently. As extreme, but not as obvious as your own." Eric shifted just a little bit, now that he was aware of the sun, he wanted more of it.

"You are neither dying, nor sick, from what I can smell." Those were both very strong scents, and Eric would have smelled them even back at the hot dog cart. "You are, however, much stronger, faster, and more interested in meat." He gestured to the shop they were currently in. "And blue. I don't know if you have noticed, but you are blue. Why are you blue?"

"Stop saying blue," Hank snarled loudly, before he could stop himself. Blue was everywhere.

He stopped pacing for a moment and grabbed his hair, trying to focus his mind. It took a great deal of effort, but he remembered taking the serum, then a reaction. Then pain, running, looking down and seeing....

"Blue," he whispered, looking down at his hands in horror. He didn't remember the last night, but there was just enough... he looked down at his tattered clothing the fur poking through his shirt and coating his arms. His feet. His feet were bigger and still their horrible old shape.

His tongue touched his fangs and suddenly he felt a cold chill run donw his spine. He turned and fled to the the nearest reflective surface, the meat slicer behind the counter, grabbing and lifting it to see a clearer reflection.

The face that looked back at him was, in a word, monstrous. Hank didn't respond for a moment, but then felt a surge of rage and horror that caused him to turn and fling the metal instrument through the window of the shop. It wasn't the last thing, either, as the realization dawned his temper manifested itself physically, much to the destruction of the shop surrounding him.

"NO! No no NO! This wasn't how it was supposed to work!" he roared, loosing all grip on his emotions as anger filled him.

Eric watched the flying objects very carefully. It was clear that Hank wasn't paying much attention to where he was flinging things, and Eric wanted to be ready to dodge if he had to. Avoiding flying meat slicers was not something he'd had planned for any part of his life. He didn't want to know how it felt to be hit by one.

So it was something that had to do with science, and not magic. Eric could guess that much, but not more. He didn't know enough about Henry or his hobbies to take a stab in the dark.

Henry was really losing it, though. He'd been right to wonder if the boy would revert back to the animal. Apparently that switch had a hair trigger.

"Calm down." Eric used his soothing voice again, and resorted to the one thing he knew had worked previously. He flung a roasted chicken breast in the animal's general direction, this time not directly at him, he didn't want to risk hitting the beast and angering it more.

"We're not going to solve any of this if you can't keep your cool. I know it might be difficult, but you're going to have to work at it." Eric was digging into what it had been like to deal with a newborn vampire now. It seemed fairly similar.

By a hair, Eric restrained himself from uttering blue under his breath to see if the beast noticed.

The chicken breast refocused Hank's attention and he spun, wanting nothing more than to take one of the drink coolers he was near and break it over the other's head. Something told him he could do it, too, if he really wanted.

But he had a point. As much as Hank loathed Eric and everything he stood for he was right. He stopped moving and closed his eyes, summoning all of the mental prowess he could. He grabbed the counter and closed his eyes, doing what he could to fight back in the impulses, the overwhelming emotion. But it was different now, whatever had been inside... well, it was outside, now, and apparently as much of him mentally as it was emotionally.

"The serum. It didn't work. It must have... it must have amplified the genes. This is all... I can't be sure, but this is all me. Just... more of the X Gene. It's been amplified, not surpressed." He wanted to cry, but all he could feel was more anger bubbling up, so he surpressed it.

The flying meat had not had quite the reaction that he'd expected, but at least it got some focus happening in the shop. He was glad that Henry was gaining more control over himself.

"The X Gene." Eric repeated. He was not being condescending when he said it, just repeating something he'd not heard of previously. He pondered the situation for a moment. It seemed to him that Henry had tried to get rid of his feet issue only to end up with a more profound one.

"Right now there are only a few choices for you. I can stay with you, we can find Red so she can stay with you, or we need to take you to somebody you trust that can stay with you. Any way it's looked at, you're not going to be on your own for at least a couple of days. You're a danger to yourself and others. While that might be entertaining for me, I think I would get into trouble for letting you roam by yourself."

Eric wasn't really in the mood to take ownership of a giant blue kitten, but he would if Hank didn't think there was anybody else that could corral him. He needed time to get used to what he was. Somewhere safe to do it.

"Do you think this is something that you can reverse? Or will reverse on it's own?"

"Like I need you or Red playing with me right now," Hank snarled outright, heckles rising again at the thought. He smacked the countertop and looked away.

"I'm not even supposed to go near you," he said under his breathing, thinking about what Dinah had said. Dinah... oh lord, how was he going to explain himself to her?

He straightened. "I'm going back to my lab. If this is reversible it may only be so in a certain time span." He looked down at himself, and then at the mess he'd made in the shop. He felt a stab of shame, but shrugged it off. He'd come later and pay for the damages, there was important work to be done now.

"Not supposed to go near me?" Eric was very interested to hear this. "Who tells Henry McCoy what he is and isn't supposed to do?"

He stood up from where he'd been leaning, his arms slowly coming out of their place over his chest. He wasn't going to let Henry get anywhere without supervision.

"Then we'll go back to your lab. You'll work on whatever it is you have to work on, and I'll sit quietly in a corner." Eric followed Henry's gaze around the shop. He had also made some of the mess, but he didn't care about it.

Hank gave him a sharp look.

"You will never step foot in my lab so long as I draw breath," he glowered, pulling himself up to sit on the countertop. "And I listen to the advise of those I respect. "You'll look after yourself?" Eric smirked. "Really? Because you looking after yourself hasn't gone so well as of late." He gestured to the store around them. "It has resulted in you terrorizing many people and destroying a hot dog cart. That's only what's gone on in the time since I found you. What you might have done before that." He shrugged.

At one point, Eric knew, Henry had had an encounter with Baba. A very close one, as strong as her scent was on him.

"Without the knowledge that you are well watched by somebody, I will not be leaving your side. You might not enjoy my company, but you are like a baby vampire. Feral, unpredictable, and dangerous. I have dealt with such things before, I know how to keep you from hurting yourself or other people.

Hank looked over his shoulder, glaring daggers at the man for insinuating he'd turned himself into some type of demon.

Yet, how far from the truth was that, really?

He bit his lip and then thought for a moment. Again, Eric was right. He was a danger, for now, until he made sure he was fully in control again. "I'll go to the hospital. I have a colleague who will be able to help me study what's happened, and there's pleanty of security there to ensure I pose no threat. You have no legitimate interest in me whatsoever, and whatever you and Red were plotting before you'd do well to revisit her and your plans before deciding they'll hold through now. If I need a monitor it certainly won't be you."

He touched his pocket, but realized he didn't have his phone on him. He'd have to drop in and hope Hannibal was just there, then.

If looks could kill.

"I have had no plots concerning you." Eric was a little bored with the animosity. He didn't feel what he'd done was truly that bad. Besides, Henry had gotten his revenge at the end of that encounter. He had, after all, done his best to choke Eric to death.

"You don't want my help, and that's fine. We'll go to the hospital now, I'll leave you at the front door." Eric started for the front door of the shop, passing Henry. "You'd do well, however, to restrain yourself from claiming to know where my interests lie."

He held the door open.

Hank had no time or patience for regulating the lesser emotions at the moment, especially those regarding a man who'd haunted his dreams and who'd hurt his friends. But he pushed it out of his mind.

"I don't have to know details to know you've no decent intention towards others," he growled, walking out and then into the streets.

His anger started to calm and turn to shame however, as he walked and started to recieve gasps and stares from pedestrians in the street. He knew he deserved such a reaction, he was a great monster now, after all, wearing dirty, shredded clothing and no shoes. It still hurt, though.

"Toward no others, now." Eric said, almost mockingly, as he followed Henry out of the shop and into the street. He walked beside and slightly behind the blue creature, ready to chase if it became necessary. "So now I have absolutely no interest in anybody but myself outside of the negative. Nice to know."

Eric didn't pay attention to any of the other people around them. Those were beings he truly did not care about. They were the City's creations, and he had learned how very unlike normal they were.

"Interests can change. Intentions can change. Perhaps I had no decent intention, as you say, when we first met, but it might surprise you that I've come to like you, Henry. You're interesting. You're not as spineless as you first appeared to me. You're intelligent. And now you're also blue. It would displease me to see you harmed. I'd also like to make sure you don't do anything you'd find regretful."

Henry attempted to not growl at the other's mockery. That was what really got under his skin, but he was chanelling self control. Calm, peace..... it was already hard enough every time he saw his own body. Blue, he was blue! What fresh hell had he brought down on himself?

He shot the vampire a suspicious look, confused by the words and actions he'd expressed. Then he looked away.

"I've no intention of forming any sort of relationship with a vampire who uses and abuses my friends on a whim," he said flatly.

"What friends of yours have I used or abused?" Eric asked with honest curiosity. What people could they have in common?

He knew that the City was a truly small place in the end, that it was impossible to keep from running into everyone eventually, but it was still interesting for him to hear who had met whom.

"If I had any inkling that you'd not use the information against me I'd tell you," Hank responded snapishly. The members of the Justice League would most likely be identified soon enough, he wasn't going to start spouting out the names preemptively.

He rubbed his arm, testing the thickness of his fur. "You're walking in the sunlight. Do none of the written restraints of vampirism effect you?"

"If I had any inkling that you'd not use the information against me, I'd tell you." Eric used Henry's words against him. Considering Hank's anger, Eric would not be surprised at all to discover anything he'd said to the boy had been told in hopes that it would bring him down.

"Isn't it glorious, however? It's been such a long time since I last saw the sun. It's been very pleasant. I think I might enjoy seeing the flowers the most. So many of them close at night."

That earned a half hearted gawf from Hank. He supposed it was only fair and didn't press the matter.

"So it did effect you, until recently," he mused aloud. That matched up with something he half remembered the vampire mentioning earlier, that they had both gone through changes. He sighed. "I never paid much attention to them before. But I suppose that's human nature, to ignore the most inherant joys in life until they're taken away. Congratulations on being able to enjoy the sun's rays again." He meant it, too. He'd spent long enough in dark, dank labs to know what a painful relief it could be to see the sun again, and that would only be after a few weeks. He couldn't imagine how long it had been for somebody as old and powerful as Eric.

"Until recently." Eric agreed. He didn't mind sharing that much. He was fairly sure that most of the people he'd encountered had known he was a strictly night-dwelling creature previously. It would be no secret to the majority of his acquaintances that being in the sun was a new and special thing for him.

"Honestly, it's vampire nature as well. After a certain age, you stop thinking about things like flowers. They just don't matter very much in the grand scheme of things. Humans have nauseatingly short lives to us, so you can imagine how brief a flower is to our perception. The number of us that care for plants or pets is very low."

"Hm." Hank filed the information away, he was too distracted to want to investigate the other much.

He noted that the City seemed to be... different around him, and as he set off towards the hospital it wasn't taking too much time to get there. Everything was much more still.

"The theory goes that that is precisely why they are so important. The fleetingness of their existances," he said absently. More to himself than the vampire. He certainly didn't want to waste time looking at flowers right now.

Eric noticed the change in his companion's attention. Hank sounded far away now, not in the moment. Even the anger seemed to have faded from his voice.

"Well, now you're just distracted. And we were having such a nice conversation." Eric didn't know what had caught the boy's eye. "What is it now?"

Hank blinked, coming out of his thoughts. He wasn't used to talking to others with a preoccupied mind and chided himself for forgetting to be social, automatically reacting to the disapproval. Though he wondered almost immediately after why he felt uncomfortable displeasing a vampire he didn't like or want to be around all that much.

"I'm trying to figure out what went wrong with the cure. All of the tests indicated it was supposed to work," he said moodily.

He motioned his hand to the looming hospital. "Well there that is, just where it was last time I saw it." Eric wasn't sure he was going to be able to get used to this lack of movement now that he'd lived with it. It made things interesting.

"I can't say much to scientific things." He turned to Hank. "But it seems to me that usually things are tested before they're used. Did you do that?"

He was glad to see the hospital, tohugh it was odd that he found it so quickly. Maybe the City was helping him, for once?

"I did," Hank growled, unable to help himself. "I did exstensive research and testing. It worked in the lab, but it was tailored. I couldn't well know if it would work entirely unless I took it myself. Obviously something went wrong."

He shook his head and started up the steps to the hospital's main entrance, ignoring the looks he was getting. "This is the part where you leave. I would thank you for the escort but I really didn't need or want it. Goodbye."

"Well, perhaps it's one of those things that don't work the same in mice as in humans." Eric mused. Which was obvious.

He watched the people watch Henry for a moment as the now blue boy departed.

"See you later, Henry." He said. He didn't call it out, getting the feeling that the beast would probably be able to hear him just speaking it normally.

Then he was gone.

Hank heard the man, but just kept walking. He had never tested the cure on a living thing, and although he'd had his reasons at the time even the smugness of the vampire was grating on his nerves, and simultaneously inspiring guilt.

He hurries into the hospital, muttering "I know where I'm going" to the shocked nurses who didn't recognize him before tracking down Hannibal.

To his horror, it was easy once he caught his colleague's scent.
