A real date with God? (Jesse)
Zoe stared at herself in the mirror. She fixed her hair, then looked at her dress. It had been some time since she cared about someone and how she looked for said someone. She rarely bothered with dressing up; the dinner was already in the oven, remaining warm. It wasn't anything overly fancy, but it was actually something different. A stew with cornbread. It was something more suited to his upbringing perhaps. Yes, she'd taken the time to find out what he might have eaten before he came to the City.

The dress tight in just the right places, hung in others, cut just right to show exactly how female she was. Her hair had been straightened for a slightly different look. She was a woman tonight, and she partially wondered if he would even notice or care about the difference. There was some part of her that wanted to throw it all out and not worry about it.

For once Zoe Washburne was making a conscious effort to be something more. Or something different. Now she just had to wait for him to show up.

Jesse hadn't expected to get a phone call inviting him to another home cooked meal at Zoe's. He'd thought that the experience would be a one time thing. A thank you for saving her that would be best not brought up again and again.

Of course, he couldn't resist the invite. Not only was she a brilliant cook, but she was very easy on the eyes. He enjoyed every part of her, and having an invitation to spend time with her was very welcome.

He made sure to be on time. He made sure that he was in much better shape than he'd been when he'd been visited by Charlie. He even made sure that he didn't smell too much of cigarettes. It took two showers, almost an entire bottle of something called Febreeze, and a splash of cologne, but in the end, the only place he could really smell the scent of stale smoke was his fingertips. He assumed that the aroma had sunk into his bones and nothing would ever get it out short of godly intervention.

Jesse knocked on the door softly, and waited.

There was a pause as she checked herself one more time. This was gorram ridiculous, but she was going to see it through. There had never been this strange time with Wash, yet Wash had been the one to pursue her. She wasn't even sure that she was pursuing. She knew that the man knocking at the door was a very friendly type, which was extremely understating it.

Zoe, who looked more like a "modern" woman than a woman from the frontier future, opened the door. She was even in a pair of heels. He could no doubt see her dark smooth legs that slipped right up to her skirt.

"You came." It wasn't said in surprise, nor was it a question; but, there was something about it. He was actually here, and he looked...cleaned up. She was certain she hadn't said it was a date. Then again, she wasn't dressed as comfortably as she could have been.

He found himself staring when the door opened. His jaw might have even dropped open. He'd seen Zoe dressed up - for work anyway. He'd seen her in her normal clothes. And he'd seen her in the Batsuit. Nothing compared to what he was seeing now. She looked amazing.

Jesse smiled and stepped inside, without being asked.

"You look pretty goddamned good." He grasped her hand and forced her to turn in a circle, as if they were dancing. He wanted to see every angle. "Very goddamned good." He amended.

"So I guess it was a good thing I went with my gut on how to dress, huh?"

Zoe resisted for only a moment before she spun as directed. There was a soft laugh as she faced him again. It wasn't exactly what she was expecting, his reaction. If she were the type to blush, she might have. Instead she just smiled at him. Shifting the hand hold, she guided him to the kitchen.

"I thought I'd try something a little different, I suppose. You as well." She glanced over her shoulder at him, a slight smirk on her lips. Her fingers softly squeezed his, and soon they were standing in the kitchen. The cornbread was out on the counter.

"I'm not certain how all of this will taste. You don't have to lie if it isn't good." She let go of his hand to turn and grab the mitts to remove the large dutch oven. She couldn't hide the bulge of muscles, reminding both of them that she wasn't some soft girl or woman who couldn't lay a normal man flat. She made a soft sound as she lifted the castiron up to set on a waiting trivet. She might have made a soft Chinese curse or three.

Jesse let go of Zoe's hand only so that he could get nearer to the cornbread and smell it. He hadn't smelled that since ... well, he couldn't really remember the last time. If it was within the City limits, it certainly hadn't been home made.

"I won't lie." He promised. "But so far, so good. Smells tasty."

He turned to see her lifting a dutch oven, any other woman and he would have insisted to do that part for her. But Zoe being Zoe, he was sure that she would have hit him really hard if he had, and she was also done before he could even mention it.

"Any special reason for this dinner, darlin? Or is it a just 'cause we ain't seen each other in a long time thing?"

Zoe didn't answer him right away. Hell, she wasn't even sure what the true reason was. Leaning back a little, she pulled the lid off the dutch oven and set it aside. The steam rose, letting the smell of what was definitely homemade stew waft through the kitchen and out through the rest of her apartment.

"Thought you'd like something...different." She didn't look at him; it felt awkward saying it aloud. He didn't have to treat her like some warrior woman, certainly not when they were alone. It had been a strange thing with Wash, or not strange. He had protected her when they were alone. Jesse did the same in his own way. It wasn't that she was comparing them, but these little things helped her.

She stretched slightly for a set of deep plates. They were more her home than his; a beaten bit of metal or a pressed metal set down in "wooden" base plates. For a moment, she doubted what she was doing. She still wasn't sure what it was.

"Havin a home cooked meal that's from my home certainly is diff'rent." Jesse nodded, making his way over to the stew. Oh yes. This most definitely was food from Texas. "You went to a bit of trouble t'find this, didn'tcha?"

He was smiling. He thought he finally knew just how Zoe felt about him. He hadn't been sure before. They'd kissed, they'd slept together, but she'd always kept things to herself. But Jesse knew that women didn't go to so much trouble over a simple meal if they just thought you were a fun guy to pal around with.

It might have actually be a smirk. Because of the knowing.

He took the plates from Zoe and found a serving ladle. He filled them both, got a knife and cut the cornbread, giving each serving a very large helping.

"It wasn't the easiest. Finding that gorram piece..." Zoe motioned to the dutch oven. "I wanted something nice." She'd turned to watch him. There was a shake of her head as she reached into the fridge and pulled out a pitcher of what was no doubt ice tea.

"I had to ask Alfred for help." She didn't pour a glass for each, but instead took the pitcher to the table along with two glasses. "He laughed."

The warrior woman knew that the laugh, what it was, wasn't from cruelty or maliciousness. Alfred was happy. Zoe may have done something Master Bruce never had. Of course, Zoe had to figure out a way to "seal the deal" if there was a deal at all to seal. This was why she was nervous.

"The old man thought I might have taken an extreme liking to you to go through all this trouble." Zoe dipped into the fridge one more time to find the lemon wedges and grabbed a small sugar bowl should Jesse want to sweeten the tea.

"He ain't the only one with such thoughts." Jesse followed Zoe with the two bowls of stew and set them on the table. He noticed the bowl of sugar she'd brought in.

"Darlin, if yer gonna become a right Southern woman, I'm gonna have to teach you how to make sweet tea." He waved a hand toward the sugar bowl. "Ain't none of this silly 'add sugar to a glass' nonsense."

Of course, there wasn't enough sugar on the table to do it properly, so he'd just have to make due. Sweet tea was another thing he hadn't had in a good long while. He wasn't sure if his tongue and stomach could handle it anymore. Though he'd grown up on it, he was fairly sure that not putting that much sugar into your body after a while made it act like how a non-southerner's body would act. Which would be to reject sweet tea with violence.

Jesse moved to the chair he was sure Zoe would choose and pulled it out for her.

"Where I come from, a gal goes to this much trouble for ya, and she's carrying an extra bright torch with yer name on it."

Zoe's lips thinned, but soon pulled to a slight smile. She settled down in the chair pulled for her, and waited til he sat before replying.

"It's not proper tea if it's cold." Zoe came back. She knew more about hot tea and honey; though if she were drinking anything, she actually preferred clean pure water, which was something she rarely had on a ship. "Alfred suggested the bowl. I don't plan to be a right Southern woman, but I don't mind making concessions now and then for a particular Southern gentleman."

She looked over the table, smiling. It really wasn't a bad spread, even if it looked a little simple. Far simpler than what they were wearing at the time.

"I wanted to show you that I care. You didn't want me to die, and I didn't think it was your normal good ole boy wishing to keep a gal alive either. I like you." 'Like' might have been the wrong word, but the right one wasn't there yet.

"And where I come from, when anyone goes to this much trouble, either you've got something hard on them, or they want to paint your name on the side of their ship." Yes, brightly burning afterburners.

Jesse could have actually argued all night about hot tea versus cold. Hot tea just was not right. Of course, he came from a place where it was rarely cold enough to really enjoy a cup of tea hot. If it didn't have a lot of ice in it, it just wasn't right to him.

Clearly it was a fight that would last until one of them died, however.

"I like ya too." Jesse said, but he knew it wasn't what she meant. He wasn't going to push her, though.

"So which is it, do I need t'buy you a ship so ya can paint my name on it?"

Zoe laughed softly.

"Well, you do know one of my darker hobbies." Zoe looked at the cornbread slice then at all the food on the plate. It did look good; it looked like something she had had on a fringe planet. It looked like home.

"Wouldn't you like that? A ship as big as day with Custer's Revenge or Jesse's Long Ride, some nonsense. I know of some folk who brand their loved ones name into their back end like they would a bit of cattle." Finally the Amazon picked up a fork and speared a piece of meat.

"But, then, branding like that only works if you plan on showing your tail to a few people." She lifted the piece of meat to her mouth and slid it tween her lips, chewing slowly and methodically.

"Custer's Revenge." Jesse nodded. "I like that one."

He followed suit with the eating, but not in the same way. He used his spoon to put some of the stew on the edge of the cornbread and took a large bite.

"Folk do that in my home, too. Just with tattoos. Not always on the rear, neither. Nor just the name. Some folk get real elaborate, get whole portraits done." He took another bite. "It ain't about who's gonna see it. It's about known that it's there."

"Never was one for that sort of thing." Zoe watched him for a moment. It wasn't bad food, and she'd made sure the meat to vegetable ration was about even. She couldn't have a meal made completely of meat, no matter how good it turned out. She set her fork down as she looked at him.

"I suppose it could be. Knowing that it's there." She looked at her plate and took a breath. She hated dancing around, avoiding a subject. Straight to the point had often worked for her.

"I haven't felt something like I do for you since Wash died. Probably not the best thing to say over a good plate of food, but it had to be said. It's not like how I felt with him or with Mal. I don't trust easy, and while I could have any man in my bed, if I were looking for it, there's only one I want there." She wasn't looking at him exactly. Her focus was more on his ear than his face. "Problem is, the man I want there may not want to be there all the time, or even with just me. You've never lied to me, and you've never pretended to be something you're not. I appreciate that. But, I won't be just one of many; if that was what I wanted, I would have become a Companion. Better money in that than there ever was in serving on a ship."

Her language didn't match how she looked perhaps, but it was honest. It took a lot more than most would think to say too.

The conversation switched to something much more serious, they weren't just dancing around things anymore. They weren't just flirting and playing at things. He put down the bread and his spoon and looked at her.

"I won't never lie to ya." Jesse said. It was a promise, but he'd never lied to a woman in his life, especially one he had feelings for. It didn't turn out well, ever. He'd known that from the start, but his daddy had also told him that if you respected somebody, you never lied to them.

"I wasn't sure if ya wanted anything to do with me beyond what we'd been doin, but I can say I ain't opposed at all to the idea of it bein just you and me. I like women, but I don't gotta have em all. I told ya I've settled down before. It ain't impossible, or even difficult for me." He shrugged a little bit. "Is that what ya want?"

"I know, and I know things went south for you too. Didn't know if you'd be interested in doing so with me." Zoe finally looked at him, in his eyes. "I wanted to be sure I wanted it. Not one to start something if I don't think I'll finish it." Not the best words, but they were the best she could find at the moment.

"I'm tired of being alone, and I'm tired of waiting to see. You're not someone to fill the time, just so you know. I want to settle down, and I want you to be the one I do it with." She wasn't talking children; the way the world was, or the City anyway, it seemed a bad choice, but she didn't mind getting a step closer.

"I'm not going to stop working at Wayne Enterprise, and I'll continue being Batman. Until Bruce comes back to it. He may one day. Not sure what I'll do if he does, but I'll probably find something just as reckless or dangerous. I'm a big damn hero after all." She gave the cowboy a slight smile.

Jesse smiled and reached over the table, leaving his hand palm up where she could reach it. He hadn't thought he would ever find somebody to really be with again. Not after Max. But Zoe had slipped in and filled that part of his heart completely. He was glad for it.

"I don't want you to stop what'cher doin. Not one bit. I'd never ask ya to."

He liked everything else she was saying. Being together. His smile softened.

"So it's you 'n me, then. Against the world." Playfully, he narrowed his eyes, studying her. "Alls I gotta quit is the other women, right? Yer not gonna straighten me out and all that shit, are ya?"

"Well, not fond of the smoking." Zoe didn't say she'd stop that habit, but she'd let it be known. Then again, she'd never hidden how she felt about it. Her hand slid into his easily enough. "Plus, I think if you haven't gone straight yet, it's not going to happen. I'm not here to fix you."

Zoe'd never tried to change Wash, or Mal - even if those two relationships were nothing like. If she felt the need to change them, then they weren't the ones for her. Or that had always been her opinion about men and women. He wasn't some pretty thing for her to make into what she wanted.

"I'm not the most jealous type, but I will have words with any woman who thinks you should see her once you say 'yes' to this. I think you could settle it, but I'm not above having words." Zoe'd never had to worry about it with Wash. He simply wasn't that sort of man.

He'd had a feeling that she wasn't the type to try to take over a man's life once she was a part of it. He'd been mostly teasing about it, though it was also a good way to reassure himself that most of his bad habits were going to still be in tact.

"Don't you worry yer pretty little head. I might still be flirty, but it won't go no further than that. I ain't a cheat." He grinned at her. "Downright loyal. Like a dog."

"Mm, 'dog' isn't always a good thing." Zoe squeezed his fingers, but her smile said she was teasing. "But, you do make a good dog."

She looked at her plate, glad the metal was keeping it somewhat warm. It wasn't steaming, but it wasn't cold even with their talking.

"I don't mind the flirting." She was glad to know that he wasn't going to try to change her. She wasn't a genteel lady, nor was she someone who need to be saved, even if she did put herself into danger.

"So, how do we settle this? Never lived somewhere that my beaus didn't live close by. Usually they were on the same ship." She smiled. "Have to say doing this on land is a little odd."

"If you're living out in the Black, you pretty much take what you get. Sometimes being locked up with someone was damn fun." Zoe smiled at him. She shifted a little and leaned over to kiss his cheek.

"You do what you have to to survive. You'd get used to it; you'd survive." She leaned a little further and kissed his lips, but was soon sitting back in her chair. "Now, I suppose we finish this meal, then you take me to bed and have your manly way with me."
