Smile For Me [Cupid Challenge: Susan]
Jack was rather ambivalent about Valentine's Day. He liked it, because when he had a long term significant other -long term meaning a couple weeks, he received gifts and Jack liked receiving gifts. However, when Jack was painfully alone, as he was now, it was just depressing to watch the slew of straights wander about gushing over chocolates, candies and shades of rouge. Maybe it was because he was lonely, but he stood out on the street corner, looking out over the City with a certain degree of frown on his features.

This, to be plain about it, sucked. Valentine's Day alone sucked. But Jack would endure, he always had before. He'd just order some flowers, have them delivered to himself with a mystery note attached and make it look to all around him like he was involved.

He didn't feel it at first. The shift in his emotions and a sting in his heart. He didn't notice it until his eyes caught sight of a young girl crossing is path. "Hello," he said, trying to draw her attention. Something was off, something was not right.

Susan had felt something graze her shoulder as she turned towards the male voice. "Good day sir!" she called in her usual cheerful manner as she spotted the flying arrow. She realized after seeing the tip for a split second it was not one of hers (her arrows having the red feather tips). But then she felt something she had only felt for Prince Caspian (who was only a few years older than herself) and it felt very strange and a bit wrong at the same time. Susan could not explain what she was feeling but she did wander over towards Jack as her simple skirt seemed to swirl around her. As she made sure nothing was wrong even she could not see the bit of blood from where the arrow grazed her shoulder.

This was wrong. It was immoral. It was not something he should have felt for a young girl. Girl, above all. It was awkward and uncomfortable and above all... gross. He didn't have feelings for girls.

Well, not exactly true. He had feelings of mild affection for Karen. But that was of friendship and that kind of love. It was nothing else. Karen was his Karen. His. But that was different. This was different. This was just plain wrong.

Oh god. Straightness... it was contagious.

But he couldn't bring himself to be outright rude to the girl and so he continued to smile at her. "Jack McFarland, at your service."

"Susan Pevensie sir" even she could not shake the fact she was very well mannered. But this was starting to spook the younger woman, Caspian was one thing since he was only a few years older but this was ten times worse. "Did you see an arrow fly past? I could tell it was not one of my own but something strange is going on" she gracefully explained. Besides being somewhat more old fashioned in terms of dress Susan was only 16. "Because whoever is shooting seems to have very awful aim" trying to find some humor in all this.

An arrow? Jack hadn't seen an arrow. Then again, Jack had no reason to look for an arrow either. It wasn't like they were all that common to be flying around in the City, and if they were becoming common, it was time for Jack to move. Self-preservation and all that.

That was to say, of course, that he could even leave the City and go back to New York. Strange things happened in New York, sure, but there weren't arrows flying around. There weren't guys with big swords wandering about. No, this City was strange. Very, very, strange.

"I've not seen anything, no."

"I saw something fly by and from what I could tell the tips are nothing like mine" Susan let Jack see one of her arrows (the tips being red feathers). "But its like something happened when it grazed me" trying to understand why she was suddently very interested in someone much older than she was.

What was with people carrying weapons around with them? Obscure, non automatic weapons at that. He looked at the arrow as she offered it forward. Jack supposed it was nice enough. Nice for an arrow. If arrows were suppose to look nice.

There was a moment of remembrance, when Jack recalled a second of pain that occurred shortly before he'd run into the young woman. "Alright, I'll bite. If it wasn't one of yours, where do you think it came from?"

"I have no idea but I have heard talk of a flying creature that has been shooting them" Susan offered. "From what I could see these arrows had pink tips and not feathers, so I ruled out my arrows having been grabbed" she added.

If there was someone going about shooting arrows that caused strange feelings to take root in them it had to be something wholly unlikely. Something Jack would believe in. Like Cupid.

Had to be cupid. There was no other logical explanation to Jack.

"Cupid!" He said, raising an accusing finger. "That little cherub has always been out to get me."

"Cupid?" Susan was a tiny bit confused. There had been no creature of that name during her time in Narnia so it was not making sense. "But this is so strange, I've only felt this way once before" thinking of Caspian.

"Yeah, you're young yet, you wouldn't." Jack looked around and surveyed the area to see if anyone was watching them. His mind was set on the Cupid idea now. It seemed the most likely explanation.

"I don't feel this way toward girls." Ew. Girls.

"I only felt this once before and he was only a few years older" Susan was thinking of Caspian of course. She was racking her brain as she spoke,"But maybe there can be some good in this little twist of fate" she offered.

Jack eyes her suspiciously. "What sort of good?" He really hoped she wasn't going to get all clingy on him, Jack didn't get into the whole clingy thing with girls.

He also hoped she wasn't going to go all mushy on him. While Jack didn't always mind mushy, there was a line and this would cross it. This was a girl. A young girl at that.

Just. No.
