A Little Help (Open)
There were a great deal of things wrong with the City, even Kaylee knew that, but it did provide when she really needed something. She was starving hours ago and when she rolled out from under the engine she found a sandwich waiting for her. Whenever she got thirsty there was always strawberry lemonade waiting for her to drink in her glass, even if she emptied it the last time she drank from it. She liked having everything provided for her. But at the same time, as much as she hoped for Serenity to spring to life it wasn't happening. Her mechanical know how was pretty useless when the city was living in the dark ages as far as she was concerned. Mal had his guns, Wash was alive, Simon had the hospital, and Kaylee had a dead engine and more repairs to do to Serenity than she'd ever done before. It was like her baby went through hell and back to get here.

It was enough to make anyone frustrated.

It just felt three hundred times worse with Kaylee. Serenity always talked to her, always told her what was wrong. Even when the engine died and they couldn't break atmo. Serenity talked to her and it was as if Serenity was just too tired these days to say one gorram thing. Kaylee sighed to herself as she hung over the side of the engine, grease all over her coveralls and hair a complete mess. Kaylee was ready to call it quits for the day again. They were lucky to have some power. She'd rigged a few batteries and even more electricity to the main power line and got the lights working. But the panel hadn't lit yet, just the normal lights.

Which meant her bunk at least had some power. So she could lay in her bed instead of laying in the hammock beside the poor dead engine. Kaylee felt all but useless this time. Mal really wanted it to work. She really wanted it to work. Serenity was their home. Wash had Zoe. Simon had the hospital. River had.. well she hadn't seen river yet, but River always had Simon. She didn't have Simon anymore because Simon wasn't her Simon. Inara had a really nice apartment in this place, and Inara could blend in anywhere. But Mal and Kaylee? Serenity was it, they both felt awkward outside of it. Kaylee had to fix it, for them. If the others didn't come, well.. It'd be her and Mal. Kaylee could live with that.

"Damn!" She muttered as she pulled her hand out of engine. She'd hit something and the wrench clattered to the floor beneath the engine. Kaylee got down on her hands and knees and started to look for it.

As if this day could be any worse.

Rincewind had left the hospital slightly dejected but happy to have something to do and somewhere to go every day. Plus, he had these scrub things!

The Luggage toddled along behind him, opening and shutting its lid to take in the scent of this new City. Since nothing was actively trying to kill Rincewind right now, it was fairly calm and, while not innocuous, at least not overtly threatening.

He had no real goal in mind, just finding somewhere to live and someone to talk to who would hate him or ask him to save their small town from imminent doom. So he was very surprised when he came upon the large contraption that looked like something Leonard of Quirm would build when trying to make a better bird fountain.

Rincewind looked it over, trying to figure out if it was ancient or not, when he heard a clatter and a very feminine voice curse.

He timidly knocked on the wall of the opening - he wasn't quite sure it was a door, it didn't look anything like any door he had seen - and called out, "Hello? Is someone in there? I hope you're not in trouble, I'm really not too good in those situations, just warning you in advance."

Kaylee wasn't really used to people knocking on Serenity these days. In fact, the only people who seemed to notice her at all since Kalee boarded the ship with Mal and Wash were Zombies. But as Kaylee could recall, the Zombies didn't talk none. Kaylee got her hands on the wrench and slowly crawled out from under the engine and headed for the voice.

Sounded like they were calling from the back of Serenity, near the cargo bay. Kaylee kept the wrench firmly in her hand and flew down the stairs until she was at the door's controls. If it were a monster, well, she'd hit it. Or scream for Mal.

Or find a gun. Mal always had guns around.

She pressed open on the panel and the outside door started to lower (much like a draw bridge.. Kaylee had always amused the idea that Serenity was just a castle.) while the indoor one stayed firmly shut. This way she could see them through that porthole.

"I'm not in trouble, I dropped a wrench. State your business." Kaylee tried her best to sound more like Mal, but she couldn't really. "I mean, you know. I don't normally open the door to strangers."

"And no one's openin' a door to nobody that ain't crew." Mal's voice echoed from the catwalk that stretched across Serenity's cargo bay. When the doors had shifted to open, Mal had noted the difference in the sound of the outer set versus both sets parting to allow someone aboard. Crew knew how to get in from the outside. After the zombie invasion, he was feeling awfully particular about just who was getting on his ship. Plus the undead en mass in addition to his beloved ship that just wouldn't get off the ground -- well, Mal was downright ornery as of late.

Boots clattered against metal as he headed down the steep steps. "You takin' passengers for a ship that won't fly, Kaylee?"

Kaylee dropped the wrench when Mal's voice echoed through the cargo bay of Serenity. She hadn't known Mal was around, or awake for that matter. She'd been so busy dealing with the engine and other problems she hadn't been paying much attention to people at all. Kaylee winched when it clattered on the floor and echoed one again.

Great. She really liked that wrench.

"No, I wasn't plannin' to captain! Just answering the knock is all, never know who would be knocking on Serenity like that. Could be someone got locked out or somethin'." Kaylee looked sheepish and reached down to get the wrench.

Hopefully Mal wasn't in a bad mood. She wasn't keen on watching some kind of gun fight or yellin' contest. Kaylee out the wrench back in her pocket and pushed some hair out of her face. "I'm sorry. I suppose I should head back to the engine room?"

Rincewind ducked and staggered back when the door opened from the top...but there was another door! Clever. He could almost see how it would work, even without spells, but it was still a bit beyond him.

He was about the answer the damsel not-in-distress when an authoritative voice started arguing with her. He found himself experiencing the desire to save her, help her out - a feeling he rarely found in himself because he was usually running away from the pointy-ended weapon right after he got even a glimmer of feeling it.

Clearing his throat, he called out, "Good sir! I was just checking to see if the lady was in trouble or otherwise in need of a wizard. If that is not the case, then I will just be off. Please don't take it out on her. She even told me she wasn't going to open the door!"

Mal held a hand up towards Kaylee signaling for quiet as well as for her not to move. It was a round about way of saying she didn't have to go back to the engine room. Moving towards the porthole, Mal glanced through the thick glass panel to view the self-proclaimed "wizard".

If this guy was a wizard, then Mal was a member of the Londinum Ballet. He smirked, his gaze flickering back to Kaylee for a moment. "You in need of some wizardin' there Kaylee?"

"With the way Serenity is actin' I could use some help really. She's all sorts of messed up and I don't know if I can do much for her. It's like I get one thing workin and another conks out. Got me all sorts of distressed." Kaylee admitted. She wiped some of the grease onto her cover alls and stood closer to Mal.

"But I ain't fixin' for another fight with those undead characters either. Or anyone else for that matter. City's kind of strange if you asked me."

Rincewind smiled at the door, trying to look innocuous....which isn't hard, since he was generally only a danger to himself.

He pointed at his hat, since he still hadn't changed into his scrubs. He was waiting for tomorrow, his first real day of work.

"See? Wizard. I have a degree from the Unseen University and all! I was even Chair of Approximate Accuracy for a time. That was before I ended up on the Last Continent and...well. You don't want to know about that."

The Luggage spat out some sort of contraption.

"Maybe this tool will help? I found it in my Luggage."

The Doctor was interested in advanced technology as much as the next time travelling extraterrestrial scientist was. The Enterprise was a sight to see, larger without the perspective of empty space. Dwarfed by it was a battered craft that obviously did not fly under a planet's flag. What It lacked in spit and shine, it made up for in character.

An oddly dressed man seemed to be speaking to someone in the craft. Having nothing better to do, and all the time he needed to make; The Doctor put his hands in his pockets and strolled on over.

He caught slivers of conversation. Wizarding could be fascinating. He walked beside the man with a strange hat. "Ah she's quite a ship." Looking at it casually "Not familiar with the model, but seems to have a story or two to tell." He eyed scars on the hull that might have been battle damage.

Wordy and well educated. Maybe it would have been better to have just let Kaylee be with the door. Odd choice of hat aside, he was proving to be her "type". But Mal didn't care about the stranger's background or headgear. The only thing of any interest to him was the strange device the 'wizard' held. His voice dropped to a volume that wouldn't permeate through the thick airlock door. "That somethin' you've seen before?"

As he conversed with his mechanic, the population outside doubled. At least this newcomer knew how to start a conversation that would be interesting to the captain. Turf-bound or not, his ship was everything. His passion, his livelihood, his home. As he let Kaylee get a glimpse of the tool in question, Mal offered the ship's basic information. "03-K64 Firefly-class."

Rincewind looked at it with a quizzing face.

"No, but the Luggage is capable of going to all sorts of lands and dimensions, so that's no surprise. If it helps, there's some sort of writing on it, says 'decoupler'? I don't know what that means, but apparently it's meant to make things not a couple anymore."

He ran his hand down the side of the ship.

"She's, uh, a very nice....Firefly thing ship. You live here? It flies?"

"Decoupler." She'd whispered to Mal before the man even said what the thing read. She beamed when what she said was confirmed. "It's one of many peices that go on Serenity's engine. I've been havng problems locating things since we're in some kind of back world of the past." Kaylee shrugged to peek through the port hole and look from one man to the other.

"Serenity's got a lot of stories, she's the best ship in the world. And those 'damages' will hammer out in no time." Kaylee leaned back, and looked at Mal.

"Any word from Jayne? He normally does that stuff seeing as how he's stronger than me."

"No Jayne yet. Besides, we're not in the position to worry 'bout how the outside looks until the inside's up an' running." They also weren't in the position to turn down the strange appearance of a part such as this decoupler that the self-proclaimed wizard held just on the other side of the airlock door.

Mal reached across, in front of Kaylee, to set his hand on the door controls. With a creak and hiss from the mechanics, the door began to raise. Without his brown duster on, there was no hiding the fact that Mal had one hand dangerously close to the holster at his side. The undead encounters had somewhat soured him towards strangers of any biological state near his crew and ship.

"So my mechanic might have some use for that decoupler." He wouldn't allow himself to sound needy. Need drove up the price on just about anything. "I'm sure we could come to a fair type of arrangement to take it off your hands."

Rincewind stumbled backwards as the door slowly and noisily lifted itself up.

"Fantastic," he muttered to himself as the inhabitants of the ship were revealed. Then he pasted a big smile on his face, slightly scared to death of the man.

"Oh, this thing? I'm sure my Luggage could find more if we knew what we needed."

The Luggage's lid opened and closed with a creak, as if in agreement.

"And is this your lovely mechanic? It's nice to meet you. I'm trying to think of what I need, other than a place to live and people not to be trying to kill me. Rincewind the wizard, at your service."

He swept into a bow, his robe trailing on the ground into a puddle. He cursed at the dirt, which obliged him by flying off his robe in a whirlwind and flying off.

"Huh. That's never happened befo...I mean, of course I meant to do that! My spells do seem to work in this strange land, fabulous!"

"I feel weird with the outside lookin' all beat up She don't like to be beat up Mal." Kaylee frowned.

But when he opened the door, instinctively Kaylee stepped up closer to Mal. She nodded a little. "I could use a lot of random bits and peices for Serenity. Anything else in that.. uh.. Lovely? Really?" Kaylee brightened up.

....Kaylee blinked a few times as the dust flew off.

Huh.

"I could use a lot of things for Serenity. Think you luggage has more?"

Mal grumbled a low response as the door mechanics whirred. "Kaylee, I'll worry about the outside, you just concern yourself with the inside and why this door is sounding so loud. Don't need it flyin' off when we get going."

Mal eyed his flustered mechanic as she wrapped her head around the wizard's compliment. Shaking his head slightly, Mal stepped forward to 'welcome' the wizard onboard. Welcome was a relative term. Mal was going to permit the other man to board his ship, but he wasn't keen on the swirling gusts of dust and the fact that their only hope for parts was a walking suitcase. Mal didn't do.. magic.

"If you can give Kaylee here what she needs to get my ship running; you've got yourself the use of one of Serenity's passenger dorms. Considerin' we're currently down by one Jayne Cobb, you don't have to worry about anyone trying to kill you while on my ship. So long as neither you nor your... box there... bring cause to looking into the subject."

Rincewind grinned at the pretty mechanic, then at the captain, despite his apparent hostility. Rincewind had palavered with Cohen the Barbarian and escaped from dragons, he could deal with one surly burly man.

"I would be happy to give Miss Kaylee anything she needs to run the ship! This ship is quite....quite, you know. Unique. I am very glad to hear no one will be trying to kill me, do you think I could have that in writing? No, never mind. It never lasts anyways. Hopefully, all the deadly adventures will occur at the hospital. I work there now, you know."

The Luggage shoved him aside and walked up to Kaylee. It stomped two little legs then spit out a fancy wrench.

"You know, I think he likes you. This is going to work out wonderfully! Um, there's nothing explosive on board, right? He might eat it."

"I'll work on the door once I've finished with the engine. Promise." Kaylee smiled brightly at Rincewind. "That's awfully kind of you."

She nodded a few times. "Don't you worry about anyone trying to kill you. As long as you don't get between them and their meals most of us are quite friendly. When Jayne gets here the luggage just needs to give him firearms and everything will be shiny." She grinned.

Of course then the luggage shoved him aside and spit out a very fancy wrench. Kaylee grinned and squated down. "For me? Thank you!" She picke dit up and patted the luggage. She turned her head up to look at Rincewind. "I'd prefer ..he?.. not eat anything aboard the ship. It'd make me upset and I'd cry and no one wants to see that. Serenity is out home. No eatin' anything on her that wasn't meant for you to eat." She patted the luggage again.

"Hey! If that walkin' footlocker so much as eats a protein wrapper.. deal's off." Mal called after the mechanic, the wizard and the... tool spitting suitcase. Now that he'd given them permission to come aboard, it seemed like he was fading from the equation.

Well, he wasn't feeling conversational-like anyway. Not with a wizard and a piece of luggage. Mal was getting the feeling that the less he saw of them, the less aggravated he'd be. Though, if they got the ship off the ground, he just might kiss them.

"When you get what you need, Kaylee, you can show 'em to the passenger dorms. The bridge, the engine room and the crew bunks are off limits without an escort to anyone that ain't crew. "
