Ginger & Kirk
Discussions of things and a car ride to the airport for Hawaii!
Sunday evening, August 11, 2013; car and possibly air port, idk!
TBD/In progress

"I've never been to Hawaii. have you?"

The last few weeks had been fun, especially the nights she had spent with Kirk. Ginger hadn't been in proper company of a man in awhile. Things back home had been different, then she had died, and things just kept snowballing one right after another in Lawrence and there just hadn't been time for any of the "norms" of dating and things like that for her. She had definitely not expected one night of random drinks to turn into...whatever exactly it was they had going, here. What did they have going anyway? She didn't know, didn't even really question it for the most part. Whatever it was, it was fun and she liked it and wasn't that all that mattered in the end anyway? But after nearly a month, he was pretty sure whatever fling it may have started out as was rather quickly sliding more and more into relationship territory. And she was actually okay with that.

She had met with him earlier in the day to discuss the details of their trip. When they ere leaving, how long they would be gone, all the good stuff. Once it was sorted and tickets were booked, she called the managers she would be leaving in charge of Purgatory while she was away, and finally, she started packing. Now, they were in her car on their way to the airport. Soon enough, they would be on a beach in Hawaii.

"I've never been to Hawaii. Have you?" she asked curiously, casting a short-lived glance in his direction.

This was still pretty new to him, whatever his thing with Ginger was. He had always been the type to charm his way into the bed of any given woman for one night and one night only. He never dated, never spent more than one night trying to get into bed with anyone. Bones had once joked that it should be in his medical files that he was allergic to monogamy, and the sentiment hadn't been far from the truth. So this was all new and strange.

He liked Ginger, liked her a lot. The initial attraction had been that she pursued him. She had initiated the flirting, and he had to admit that he had liked it. He had liked it a lot. And then she had kept it up. She had kept pursuing him, and then one thing lead to another and he was fairly sure he was in his first relationship ever. And it wasn't as bad as he'd imagined it could be. Whatever this was, however long it lasted, he would enjoy every minute of it.

He leaned back in his seat, studying her for a moment. The one thing he had missed the most while he was in the medbay was sharing a bed with her. He missed the sex, that was true, but he had also missed keeping her close. He had taken to watching her sleep and he had hated not being able to do that. He was going to make up for lost time during this trip. He grinned at her before she turned back to the road. "Once, but I ended up getting sick and stayed in the hotel the whole time."

She wrinkled her nose at the thought of it. "What a waste of a trip!" She laughed, shaking her head. "I'll be so bummed if I end up getting sick while we're there." she admitted. "I never did a ton of traveling, really. Columbia to LA, LA to Vegas, that was about it. Well, and then showing up here. But I'm not sure that counts."

She shrugged the thought off easily and wondered if they were ever going to get to the exit for the airport. She was excited and it was making time slower than it should have been. "Oh, wait! I went to Italy once. With one the Doctors in the TARDIS. I almost forgot about that. Was nearly a year ago now, I guess. We should go to Italy sometime." She grinned. "It's amazing."

He chuckled slightly. "Yeah, I caught a stomach bug before we left, and then by the time we got there I was violently ill. And the worst part was, it had all been my idea. Taking a break from Starfleet and San Francisco, and I'm the one who gets stuck in the hotel room puking his guts out for four days. Thankfully one of my crew who came with us was a doctor, so I didn't end up in a hospital, but it wasn't pretty, and they all made sure I knew how much fun they were having."

He watched her face light up when she mentioned Italy. "Was it this era or in the past? Oswin's mentioned the TARDIS goes through time as well. Maybe one day I can get her to introduce me to her Doctor and I can go somewhere else. Or some other time. If he wants to take me, of course." He leaned back in his seat slightly. "I mean, it's already a big deal to be here. I loved this era. But I'd like to go to other times as well."

"Thaaat is just terrible." She said, shaking her head, thinking of how miserable he must have been. Especially given the whole trip had been his idea in the first place.

"This era," she nodded. "I'm not sure if it can go through time, not sure the Seal lets them use that part. Couldn't hurt to ask, though." She grinned.

"No, it couldn't hurt," he said. "But even getting the chance to go to more places would be fun. I mean, I'm glad it's just the two of us on this trip, but I'm sure you'd like to take your friends somewhere, and I get the feeling I'd really enjoy a trip somewhere with Oswin and her Doctor. And while I don't mind planes it might be nice to get there more quickly than an hours long flight."

He looked at the road ahead of them. "I think the turnoff for the airport is coming up on the right. or at least that was what the sign we passed said." He glanced over at her. "Is it bad that I think this is taking forever? I just want to be in Hawaii already, and we still have to deal with the airport and the flight before we get there."

"I am considering it," she nodded, smiling slightly. "A big group trip in the near future, maybe to the Bahamas or something." She had even mentioned it to Amy and Charley before they'd left.

"It is taking forever, doll. If Andrew was still here, I'd have just had him pop us on an island and be done with it." She hesitated for a moment before adding, "He was a teleporter."

"The Bahamas would be nice," he said with a grin. "I like tropical places. I mean, I spend most of my time in space or a city which can be overcast and foggy and cold. Tropical places really appeal to me. Though someday I'd like to go to other places, like Italy or England. Really get to travel a bit." He turned to look at her. "One day I'd love to show you space, if there's a way to do it. I doubt it would be the same way it is where I'm from, but the chance to be out in the middle of the stars is something else."

Kirk nodded. "Considering we have machines that do the same thing where I'm from, hearing that a person can do it doesn't sound so crazy. I almost wish I'd been holding a transwarp device instead of my phaser when I got sent here. Then we could have gone just about anywhere." He paused. "As long as it worked here, at any rate. It might not have."

"Right?" She grinned. "I just love beaches." She shrugged, finally taking that turn off to the airport. "Travel would be amazing. Just, all the time, going to new places and seeing new things. Space, though. I can't really fathom it. Not logically, really."

"I can only imagine the sort of things you guys must have in your time." She admitted, grinning again. Ginger was glad to finally park her car and get out. "Let's get this show on the road." She winked.

"Maybe after this trip we could plan another one, if everything goes well," he said, watching as they drove. "I mean, other than the group trip you were just talking about. I think if I gave more notice than I did for this trip I could probably get more time off. And maybe we could do something like hit a cruise. I've never been on one of those before."

He thought for a moment. "I don't really know how to explain it. When you're here, or some other planet, and you look up at the sky it all seems so so far away. When you're actually in the middle of space, though, it's so close. It's dark, but everything that looks so tiny from the ground looks huge. I mean, stars aren't tiny dots in the sky in space. They're...bigger. I can't really describe it. But it's pretty cool, if you can wrap your head around it."

He got out as well and went to the trunk to grab their things. "There's a lot of tech I wish we had here. Not just the stuff in space, but other comforts of home. Though I will admit I had some tech from this era, so not everything was unfamiliar. And while most of the cars drive themselves, my stepfather had a collection of classic cars so I knew how to drive one, plus I already told you about my motorcycle." Then he grinned. "Though I sent one of my stepfather's cars over the side of a cliff the only time I drove it. Almost went over the cliff myself, too."

"That would be brilliant!" She grinned, excited just by the idea of it. "And don't you worry about this trip. It'll be great." She assured him with another grin. "Oooh a cruise would be fun! I've never been on one either."

Ginger smiled as she listened to him explain what space was really like. She coudn't fathom it, though, not really. In this time, mostly still only astronauts did the going-to-space thing. "It sounds amazing."

"And when you say classic," she said, grabbing her purse from the backseat before locking up the car. "You're not talking two-thousands, are you?" She asked, arching a teasing eyebrow in his direction.

"Then maybe that group trip should be a cruise to the Bahamas," he said with a chuckle. "I bet your friends would love that. I mean, as long as it's a good cruise. When I was going back through some of the big news stories from this year in an effort to catch up on current events I saw something about a cruise liner breaking down. Knowing our crazy luck that would happen to all of us if we went on a cruise."

"Actually, his collection spanned the 1950s to the 2020s," he said as he grabbed the handle of her suitcase and pulled it up. "The car I sent over the side of the cliff was a 1960s era car. My motorcycle was a 2009 Harley Davidson, though. I would have gotten an older bike but it was hard enough to find parts for the 2009 model. But I wanted a Harley instead of one of the other models, like Suzuki or Honda. They were easier to rebuild and maintain."

"A two-for-one, I like the way you think," she said, pointing a finger in his direction, which was quickly placed over his lips as he talked about the cruise ship that had broken down. "Ah, no, shhh! You will not jinx our cruise, mister!" she laughed softly, letting her hand fall back to her side.

"My sister's dream car was a sixty-seven mustang. And who doesn't want a Harley if given the choice, I mean, really." she mused, heading towards the baggage check. "They're going to frisk me, aren't they?" she said, eyeing the security guards and metal detectors and wrinkling her nose at the thought. "They should let you frisk me instead." she winked and headed over to empty her pockets and walked through the detector with ease, spinning on her heel to watch him.

He emptied his own pockets, following her lead. He made it through the security checkpoint with ease, and he collected his things again when he was done. "You know, it is so not like this where I'm from," he said with a grin. "We don't really have security like this, probably because there was an outbreak of world peace a while back." Then it faltered slightly. "Usually it's pretty peaceful, at any rate." He really didn't want to think about Khan or any of that right now. That was the whole reason he was leaving town so quickly in the first place.

They started walking again and he looked at her. "So I noticed we didn't have any tickets to fly," he said after a moment. "Does that mean you got us a private jet? Because if you did, I think we could probably have some fun on the way to Hawaii," he said, his grin coming back in full force. "The mile high club exists even in my time, you know."

"An outbreak of world peace?" she repeated, laughing softly. "Well, that certainly sounds better than Lawrence." she smiled and grabbed her things again. "Can't be perfect," she said, deciding not to press why he suddenly had that fallen look on his face. If he wanted her to know, he'd tell her.

Ginger smirked at that question, "How did you guess?" she said, leading the way. Moments later, they were on the jet, ready to get settled for the flight. "You play your cards right, we'll be joining that club together." she winked.

"It is. Well, it is in a way. The last few years there was one alien race who started conquering other planets," he said quietly, keeping his voice low to keep others from hearing a conversation that would probably brand him a lunatic. "I had a run-in with them. They are not pleasant." And once again, he was back to thinking about that damn bastard. He needed to get off this topic of conversation quickly or else he'd be in a foul mood for the rest of the way to Hawaii.

Or maybe he didn't. He'd talked about it a bit with Oswin, or rather drunkingly rambled about it. Anatoly had listened but he wasn't sure how much the man would be willing to believe so there was a lot he had not talked about. He had put himself through the misery of four hours of his past, and now he was running away from the thing that had caused the stupidity in the first place. Eventually he would need to go back, and Khan...Sherlock...whoever he was would still be there. Maybe talking about it with Ginger wouldn't be a bad thing.

But for now there were other, more enticing things to talk about. He settled in next to her. "It's actually kind of funny, but that is one thing I've never done before, mostly because I was always on a Starfleet shuttle. maybe when I was a cadet I could have done it, but as a captain I had an example to set. And besides, fooling around with someone on the ship is a bad idea. If it all goes south you're stuck together for the duration of the mission." He paused for a moment, then reached over for her hand. "I'm glad we could leave on such short notice. I just needed to get out of there."

"Sounds terrible," she wrinkled her nose at the idea of it. She could only hope the Seal didn't get particularly bored and decide to send alient planet-conquerors to Lawrence or something. She shook her head to dislodge the thought from her mind.

"Really?" she asked, hiding a smirk somewhere in he corner of her mouth. "Well, we should change that today, then." she let him pull her over toward him once she took his hand, "Silly examples," she said with a cute little wrinkle of her nose, arms sliding around his neck. She stood up on her tiptoes to kiss him softly. "What are you running from?" she asked, fingers sliding through his hair.

[ooc: Now I sort of want to see Klingons show up in Lawrence...]

"Yeah, there are times I hate being a good example," he said, grinning at her. "Which is the only reason I'm glad I'm here without my crew. Then I can do stuff and not have to worry about the example I set. Though they would all like you. And they'd probably like this settled down me, too."

He looked down at her as he held her close. "There was a new arrival recently. He calls himself Sherlock Holmes. I guess he was here before, so no one is really blinking an eye at him. But when I look at him I don't see whoever Sherlock Holmes is. I see Khan Noonien Singh, a war criminal from my time. This guy is bad news. Really bad news."

He moved his hands up and down her back slightly. "The reason I watched my movies is because I didn't know how we beat him. All I know is that I died and then two weeks later I was awake and alive and it all had to do with him and his blood. So i decided to watch the movies to find out. I wasn't ready for it. The first one wasn't so bad, because most of the bad stuff happened to Spock. It was hard to watch me fail to save his planet, but some good came out of watching that movie. I got to see my dad be the hero everyone said he was. I mean, it was hard watching my mom lose him, but I was really proud of him."

He paused for a moment, the leaned forward slightly, pressing his forehead against hers. "The second movie only happened about a year and a half ago for me. I thought I could handle it. I thought I'd dealt with Admiral Pike's death, with Admiral Marcus's death. Hell, i thought I'd dealt with my own death well enough. But every time I saw Khan, every time that smug bastard was on screen, and then watching all the deaths..." He sighed. "The stupid part is I drank so much I still don't know how Khan got defeated. But I can't be there with the guy who looks like him right now. I'm nowhere near ready to deal with him, even if it is just a facetwin and I'm having the worst luck with it ever." He pulled away slightly to look at her. "So I guess that's why I'm running away. That, and if I'm right and it is Khan and not Sherlock...I want to make sure you're safe. I mean, I know eventually we have to go back, but if I'm right maybe in two weeks he'll slip up and someone will notice. And if I'm wrong, maybe there will be concrete proof to convince me that he really is Sherlock Holmes."

"Must be tiring," she said, sliding her hands over his shoulders. "Always being such a leader." she smirked up at him. "They might." she didn't know his story, his friends, his crew, and she knew it was just s likely that they wouldn't like her, but she didn't dwell on what if's and maybe's. That wasn't Ginger's style.

She listened patiently as he explained everything about this guy, this apparent facetwin. She didn't know the Sherlock that had been here, but she'd heard about it, about Moriarty nd his reign of insanity, how Katherine had been his vampire guard-dog, how John Watson lost his absolute best friend for the second time. She couldn't imagine it. But his man who claimed to be Sherlock shared a face with someone Kirk knew. Someone who Lawrence didn't need in ther midst if he was right. "I hope you're wrong this time," he said, laying her cheek against his chest. "It's not bad, you know. To be wary when facetwins come through." she frowned, thinking of the way Jerry had deceived them all. "They read back sometimes. Trick you. If he's lying, he truth will come out."

She tensed as he talked about dying, memories of her own brutal death flashing through her mind. "You died?" she frowned, tilting her head up to look at him.

"I hope I'm wrong too," he said quietly. "Khan is...I guess a monster is a good enough term. He'll kill anyone who gets in his way. He killed a room full of Starfleet officers to make a point." He sighed. "I hate thinking this way, but if he'd just killed Admiral Marcus that evening things would have been a lot different. There wouldn't be so many deaths on my conscience now. I lost two security officers to Klingons and hundreds of crew when both Admiral Marcus and Khan fired on my ship. And then there's Admiral Marcus, who only died because I brought Khan on his ship." He shut his eyes. "His daughter Carol is one of my crew, and also one of my friends. Most of the time we avoid talking about it, but every once in a while we would talk about that whole thing. Not in detail, but at least I know she doesn't hold me responsible for her father's death. If I could just convince myself of that, everything would be great."

He opened his eyes, looking down at her, and nodded slightly. "Every ship in Starfleet is powered by a nuclear reactor in the ship. It's closed off to people to keep them safe. After Admiral Marcus and Khan both fired on our ship, we got pulled into Earth's gravitational field. The housing that contains it was knocked off balance. We had to get power back on or we would all plummet to Earth and everyone on the ship would die, as well as thousands of people in the city below, and the only way to do it was to go into the area housing the reactor and fix it by hand. I knocked out the chief of engineering and went in myself. I died of massive radiation poisoning. I managed to make it back to the clear door separating the compartment from the rest of the ship, and..."

He was quiet for a moment. "Spock was there," he said quietly. "I've never seen him cry, ever. He's half-Vulcan and half-human, but you'd never guess there was a human side to him unless you actually got to know him. He doesn't show emotion. No Vulcan does, really. And the last thing I saw before I died was him crying. That was the last memory I had until I woke up two weeks later in a hospital room with Bones standing over me, checking my vitals. No one told me how they defeated Khan. All I know is Spock did something with Uhura's help and they got his blood, made it into a serum and brought me back." He looked at her closely. "That's the whole sordid story, or at least what I remember and what I gathered from the movie before I got too drunk to remember much of anything."

"I'm sorry," she whispered, reaching up to touch her fingertips to his cheek. She could tell he was still reeling from all of this, still not healed from it all. And who could blame him? Some wounds never fully healed. "I wish you didn't have to carry all of this."

Ginger wasn't sure how to process all that he was saying. It was a lot to take in all at once and it wasn't a happy story with a fluffy ending. Neither was hers. She ignored it most of the time, but as he talked about battles and deaths and dying, she found herself clutching at his shirt, practically clinging to him, images flashing through her mind. Answering the door at the penthouse in Vegas only to be mauled to death by a vampire; waking up in Lawrence, lost and confused, covered in blood, but the wounds healed into simple scars; the curse Maleficent had placed on her, turning her into one of them, only difference being she fed on energy instead blood; the day Peter, no, not Peter, the monster wearing Peter's body had caught her in the alley after Jerry had turned him. Tears had welled up before she had time to try and stop them.

Maybe she wasn't dealing so well, either. And how could she, when she didn't face things, only shoved them down and ignored them. Fake it until you make it was pracically her life motto with those sorts of things.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, taking half a step back, reaching up to wipe the tears away from her eyes.

He hadn't let go of her yet, and he pulled her close again. here he was, spilling his story, and it was affecting her and he wasn't sure what to say. "Hey," he said quietly. He began rubbing her back slightly. "We don't have to talk about this. We can talk about something else. Anything else. If you want to talk about what happened with you, though, I'll listen. I'll do what I should have done when I watched those movies and let someone else help. I'll be there for you, okay?"

He didn't know if he was saying the right thing, or if he was just making things worse. He was good at comforting people on a larger scale, of saying soothing words to thousands of crew over an intercom when he didn't have to see the fear or shock or sadness on each face. But here, alone with her, he wasn't sure if he was doing the right thing. The only thing he knew was he really hated seeing her cry. It hit him in the gut and he just wanted to do whatever it took to get her to smile again. "I'm sorry I brought it up," he said quietly, pressing a kiss into her hair. "I'm really sorry."

"It's okay," she mumbled, leaning into him, letting him hold her because somehow, it made her feel better, safe. "I just...I don't deal with things, you know? I just ignore it and I lock it away until I just sort...don't think about it anymore. It's easier...to ignore everything instead of facing it."

She was fidgeting with his shirt again, as she tried to find a way to say what she needed to say, but the words just weren't coming. She shook her head, "I can't," she mumbled, burying her face in his chest. "Something else," she muttered, pulling away again. "Let's do something else."

"Hey, it's okay," he said quietly, just keeping her close. After a moment he pulled away from her and tilted her chin up so she was looking at him. He looked at her, smiling to put her at ease. Not his usual "I'm charming and I know it" grin, but a more relaxed and genuine smile. The kind he often found himself wearing when she was around. He'd think more about that later, because at the moment he didn't want to admit even to himself that he was falling for her, and falling hard and fast. "We can talk about other stuff, if you want. Like plans for this vacation, or anything else."

Then he paused. "Or, we could always do something a bit more physical. Not that every single problem can be solved with sex, but if you're trying to forget something it works fairly well. And I, for one, would like to do something to make you smile right now. So whatever you want to do, I'm open to anything."

She stared up at him, the fear and anxieties seeming to dull and she managed a small, if slightly stiff and forced, smile. "Plans," she nodded, "plans are good."

But then he mentioned getting more physical and she couldn't help the smirk that spread across her lips before she spun to walk away from him, "Think you can handle it?" she asked, turning back to face him, smirk still firmly in place. "I mean, you've never been in the mile high club before."

"Trust me, I can handle it," he said, his own grin becoming decidedly more seductive. "It's not as though it's in the water. That is always a lot less fun than you expect. And keep in mind that while I am not currently a member of that club, I've gone to space. So a plane ride should be nothing."

He moved over to her and kept moving them so her back was against the wall of the plane. "Eventually, you know, we're going to have to sit down so the plane will take off. Pilots don't like having people stand during takeoff," he said, his face hovering over hers. "But since this is a private jet I'm pretty sure we could share a seat and no one would say anything." And with that he leaned in and kissed her, moving a hand to her waist to pull her away from the wall a bit and closer to him.
