Axel had been in Vallo a couple of weeks, now. Long enough to have settled in to a routine. But routines had to be adjusted when food ran low, and he had to go to the shops to replenish the things they had at the apartment.

He carried himself like a soldier, because active duty or not, he was a Marine. he would always be a Marine. And he was far too used to being on high alert, ready to knuckle down and kill anyone and anything that got in his way, if necessary. Thankfully there were no vampires in Vallo, at least not like what he knew. No one and nothing had tried to kill him, or Vanessa, yet.

He wasn't about to let down his guard, though, Which was why, when a woman stepped into his line of sight, he stiffened. He quelled the impulse to attack first and talk later, and after a second or two when she seemed to pose no threat, he let out a breath and let his shoulders relax the slightest bit.

"You startled me," he said. It wasn't strictly true. But it would explain his tense reaction, even if it wasn't the truth.

Reileen was exploring. She wanted to figure out the best place for her club, but she hadn't really decided yet. There was simply so much groundwork to do that it was going to take a bit of time. But she had a place to stay that she preferred to the apartments, Poe's was a delightful place and her brother was there.

She however had a tendency to be creepy by just being. And she also had the habit of walking almost silently, so it was no surprise she startled, even however briefly, the man. She tilted her head a smidge upwards.

"Did I?" she did not, however, offer any apologies. "I see." she looked him over, trying to place him, and figure out in what hierarchy she would regulate him in her worldview.

Truth was, he was jumpy. Because he was in a strange place, with a million and one unknown factors. Things he couldn't predict or prepare for. So he was jumpy, on guard, alert to the slightest shift.

He squared his shoulders, keeping a defensive stance. He held himself like military because he was military. he'd dedicated his life, before the rising, to the Marines. And after, well. He'd dedicated it to protecting the mission at all costs. Once a soldier, always a soldier.

"You wouldn't happen to know where a guy could get a good meal, would you?" Food was a universal subject. Everyone needed to eat, whether food or blood or something else. It was as good a place to start a conversation as any, and better then talking about the weather.

She had been a soldier once, and also Yakuza.... but shed been so many people she had a pretty neutral stance currently.

"Sure." she said after a moment, she cocked her head to the side, storing every piece of information for later. She didn't need it here, but you never knew.

"Do you have a preference?"

His preference was Kit Kats. But that wasn't a full meal. Really, as long as it wasn't pea soup or canned tomatoes, he was good with it.

"I am partial to a good burger," he told her. There was something about her, and the way she seemed to be assessing him. He wasn't sure what to make of it, or what it meant. But it was interesting. Like she was gathering data.

"Name's Axel," he added figuring names went a long way when talking to someone.

She nodded, "Here." she pulled up an address and name of a place. "Try there." she showed him the address, then she smiled, it was a cold smile though, Reileen was faking being nice, and sometimes the mask slipped.

"I am Reileen. A pleasure to meet you, Axel." well, a pleasure was a stretch. She wasn't exactly the most social of creatures and she was not hob-knobbing it.

Axel was no stranger to the cold shoulder. He recognised it for what it was. After glancing at the address, and committing it to memory, he nodded. "Thank you for your time, Reileen. I won't keep you."

He didn't want to be a nuisance, not even to someone he didn't know. She clearly didn't want to chat, and he really couldn't blame her. She didn't know him. She didn't know he came from a world where casual conversations with strangers were virtually a thing of the past, because most people were either dead, imprisoned by vampires, or turned to mindless bloodthirsty bastards intent on wrecking havoc and destroying everything in their wake.
