That's the whole point of life, you know? To meet new people.

Lan Zhan & Ben Hawkins

Perhaps meeting somebody you had only exchanged light meaningless conversation with over the network was not the best idea. He attributed this risk taking to his prolonged exposure to Wei Ying who he was sure if he were in his position would embrace the opportunity. Lan Huan too, he was of the mind that Lan Zhan needed to make friends, more friends, and get out more. He disagreed however his arguments had fallen on deaf ears much to his chagrin.

They had agreed on a place, a diner, and Lan Zhan was definitely facing a cultural exchange as he perused laminated menus and avoided eye contact with an over eager waitress who seemed to have hot coffee readily on hand. It was very different from what he was used to, less crowded for one, and he imagined or rather hoped the 50s aesthetic was intentional given the uniforms and overall experience from the moment he had walked in the door.

Names had also been exchanged as well as a location but he realised too late that they had not informed one another of how the other looked. Hopefully that would not be a problem but it was too late to worry about that. He would just need to keep an eye on the door and use gut instinct to guide him in the direction of who it was he was meeting. Nerves were present, lurking in the depths of his stomach, causing him to lightly tap his fingers on the table. It was rhythmic, familiar but not, a tune he had been either humming, tapping or playing ever since he was a child. He didn't know why or how he had learned it, had assumed (possibly incorrectly) that his mother must have hummed it to him when he had been younger.

The waitress was still hovering and Lan Zhan acquiesced to her unspoken demands, allowing a coffee to be poured into his empty mug.

Ben wasn't the most social creature. He had a general dislike of people, because in his experience most of them were assholes. Not all. Definitely not all, but most. And because his work forced him to interact with the public, he tried to avoid people as much as possible when he wasn't working, and yet here he was. Meeting someone he didn't know, someone he'd only chatted with briefly on some stupid network when he didn't even know why he'd bothered to join the network in the first place.

He drew in a breath as he tugged the door open. Stepping into the diner was like stepping into a different era. It was modeled not just to resemble a 1950s era diner, but to submerge a person in the feel of a small town diner in the 1950s. It succeeded, pretty much from the first step inside.

Ben glanced over the dining area, looking for someone who was...waiting for someone, he supposed. Since he had no idea what the guy he was meeting looked like.

Quite honestly Lan Zhan stuck out like a sore thumb. Not only was he the only one outfitted in modern clothing but he was also by his observation the only person of colour currently in the diner, but text on the network didn't translate to ethinicity, which was in many ways the benefits of written exchange. He blinked and in the time it took his lashes to lift again the door had been opened, the small bell tinkling to announce the arrival of a new customer, and after a brief assessment he drew the conclusion that this must be Ben.

He held up a hand and cleared his throat, indicating that he was the person he was looking for.

"You must be Ben," he said as the other man approached. "I am Lan Zhan."

Ben nodded. He had assumed someone named Lan Zahn probably wasn't American, but he didn't really care. People were people, and especially in California where people from all over the world seemed to converge. He supposed it was the same in other places, but his only experience was in California. He'd never been across state lines to know from experience.

He smiled warmly and offered his hand for shaking. "I'm Ben. It's nice to meet you, Lan Zahn." If Lan Zahn accepted his hand, Ben's handshake would be firm. Not too tight, but not a limp fish either. He understood the value of a strong handshake.

Shaking hands upon greeting was a very Western form of greeting or so Lan Zhan had discovered. He had adapted to this fairly easily despite it not being the way in which he would greet somebody and it reflected in how he reached out, took Ben's hand and returned the firm strong handshake in the same manner it was given.

"It is nice to meet you too, face to face."

He gestured towards the opposite seat and glanced at the menus which had been laid out not too long after he'd been seated. "I have not ordered anything as I did not know what you would like." Honestly he didn't know what he would like let alone a relative stranger. Coffee however was a safe bet, it was universal around the world.

"I suspect the waitress might be losing patience with me."

Ben released Lan Zahn's hand after a couple seconds, and slid into the seat.

"She'll get over it. Her job is to serve us, so." Ben shrugged. He might seem to blow off the issue, but he was a firm believer in tipping for good service. He knew how hard the work was. He just didn't want to make a bog deal of it.

He glanced over the menu. "I'll probably just get a burger and fries," he said. He was a traditionalist. He liked a good burger, and diners were usually a good place to get a burger. "And a milkshake. I hear the shakes are really good here."

Good customer service was something that Lan Zhan could understand as well as appreciate. Courtesy and manners were highly valued where he came from which might explain why he was struggling on occasion with some interactions, but it was a learning curve, one he hoped he would be able to level out soon enough.

He made a mental note about the shakes, wondering if Wei Ying would enjoy them, but he would keep to his coffee. It was not tea, but it would do.

"How are you enjoying your rare day off so far?"

"Can't complain," Ben said. "It's a nice day, I'm enjoying it." Possibly making a new friend, that was just bonus, and completely unexpected. He wasn't sure what he expected when he joined the Valar network, but he wasn't complaining about the interactions he'd had so far.

He needed to meet people, he knew that. He'd lived a relatively solitary life outside of work, for too long. Meeting a complete stranger for a meal in a diner was a good start. Making friends had never come easy for Ben. He felt like he was doing all right this time out.

Lan Zhan knew the importance of having time to yourself. Not necessarily because he practiced it himself, but he understood the reasoning and logic behind it. Self-care was integral to a good mental and physical health.

The waitress that had been hovering came over, pad in hand and looked at both men expectantly.

"What can I get for you?"

"Another coffee and a mushroom swiss club, please."

Ben ordered the BLT, with fries and a coke. That was his basic go to meal when he ate out, if it was on the menu. He didn't eat out often, but it was a nice splurge now and then.

"Oh, before I forget," which he wasn't likely to do, but Ben passed over a manilla envelope. "There's a couple discount tickets and a map and stuff in there," he said. The words Knott's Berry Farm were embossed on the envelope. He loved his place of work, and was happy to share the excitement of the park with some0ne new.

"Oh, thank you," Lan Zhan replied as he reached over to take the envelope being extended to him. He still was not sure what had possessed him to ask, but he thought that perhaps Wei Ying might enjoy the excursion and possibly others too.

He slipped the envelope into the bag next to him.

"Do you have any recommendations on which ride we should try first?"

"You're very welcome," Ben said with a smile. he liked sharing what he had, helping someone else. It wasn't a big thing, in this case, but it was still meaningful.

"I guess it depends what kind of rides you like. They're all fun, I think. The Timberline Log Ride is my favorite, but I like the water effect," Ben explained. He knew most of the guys who operated the rides, though so he was aware he might have a different experience because he worked at the park.

Lan Zhan nodded as he listened to the recommendation from Ben. He did not know what sort of rides he would like as he had never been to a theme park before, so he could safely assume that it would be a case of trial and error.

"I will be sure to try the Timberline Log Ride." He sipped at his coffee. "I have never been to a theme park before so it will be a day of experimentation, discovering what rides I do or do not like."

Might be good, to get him out of his comfort zone.

"It can be a little bit overwhelming. Especially if you don't like crowds. But it's definitely an experience." Ben told him. "I think you'll enjoy it. You might even find a ride or two that you really like."

Ben wasn't a fan of crowds, that was the one thing he loathed about working at the park. But he enjoyed it otherwise. He liked making people happy.
