Caroline rolled over in her bed when her arm hit something. Not just something. Someone.
What the hell?!
Caroline’s eyes flew open she shot up, practically jumping out of bed. “Ahhhh!” she screamed before her eyes fell on who it was. Tyler Lockwood. What the hell was Tyler Lockwood doing in her bed? What was going on? That was when she realized she was naked. “Oh my god!” she yelled grabbing the sheet and wrapping it around her quickly. Why the hell was she naked? Oh shit, Tyler was naked too. “Oh my god!” she yelled again using one hand to hold the sheet around her and the other hand to cover her eyes. “Ohmygod! Ohmygod! Ohmygod!”
When Caroline woke up yelling, he was sure something awful had happened. Some terror from the dreams, or even something weird from this world.
He bolted upright in the bed, wondering what the hell had happened to the sheet that had been covering him, and looked around, muscles tensed, ready for a fight. Instead, all he could see was Caroline with the sheet wrapped around her, her hands covering her face, her heart thumping in her chest. He frowned, took another look around, and then leaned back a little. “Caroline?” he asked. “What’s your deal?”
“You’re in my bed!” Caroline replied still screaming. “What are you doing in my bed?! Why are you naked?! Why am I naked?! Did we?” More yells and she suddenly realized how loud she was being. “Shit!” she whisper-yelled. “My mom! She’s going to kill me.”
Tyler opened his mouth to respond, because of course they had. It wasn’t like it wasn’t a common occurrence with the two of them. But the she continued, and mentioned her mom, and he had to snap his mouth shut. Her mom most certainly wasn’t going to kill them, unless she’d come back to life (not an impossibility in this place), but now didn’t seem like the time to say that.
With vampire speed, he grabbed his boxers and slipped them on. “I’m not naked anymore,” he said cautiously. Now that he was on his feet… did Caroline look a bit shorter? He couldn’t tell. “You can look at me now.”
Caroline slowly lowered her hand keeping the sheet wrapped firmly around her. She glanced over at Tyler. Okay so he may not be naked anymore but he was only in his boxers! The sight of him, seeing his body like that, his muscles exposed, Caroline couldn’t help but blush.
And then she spoke. Words coming out in a rush, the young blonde barely even taking a breath. “You were in my bed. Tyler Lockwood was in my bed. Did we? Did I just? Why would I? I’ve never -” she quickly stopped herself before finishing that sentence. How embarrassing would it be for Tyler freakin’ Lockwood to know he was her first. And she didn’t even remember it! “How much did I drink last night?” she didn’t even remember drinking in the first place.
Interesting that she chose to stop that sentence midway through when she seemed to be having trouble finishing any of her others. It took Tyler a moment to realize what was weird about Caroline. The softness of her cheeks, the wideness of her eyes, the vaguely annoying way she was talking. And then it hit him. With his vampire speed, it didn’t take him long to find the rest of his clothes on her floor and put them on. She was definitely still Caroline, and he would love her no matter what, but Caroline or not, standing almost naked in front of a teenager made Tyler feel like a dirty old man.
“I’m going to go make some coffee,” he said after a moment. “You should uh… get dressed. And then we can talk.”
How was Tyler moving around so fast? It made Caroline’s head hurt. What the hell was going on? She was both confused and excited at the same time. Caroline would be lying if she said she hadn’t thought about this moment before. About being with Tyler. Hell she had had a crush on him practically since boys stopped having cooties. Though she had never admitted it to anyone. Even Elena.
Caroline waited for Tyler to leave the room before dropping the sheet and finding some clothes to put on. From her closet. She wasn’t about to wear whatever was on her floor. She did want to look cute though. After all Tyler Lockwood was in her house. Caroline selected one of her floral dresses. She took a look in the mirror and grimaced. Her hair was a mess! And no make-up? How could she let Tyler see her like this? She gathered her hair into a ponytail, and applied some lip gloss and mascara before heading down stairs. It wasn’t perfect. But she didn’t have time for perfect. She wanted answers.
“So,” Caroline said as she walked into the kitchen. “Are you going to tell me what the hell is going on?!” Crush or not, Caroline was still a demanding woman.
The coffee was nearly done brewing by the time Caroline made it downstairs. He has, at first, been confused about what was taking her so long, but when she came down he understood.
He sighed, grabbed a bottle of alcohol from the cupboard and added it to his cup - he was, apparently, going to need it - and poured Caroline her own cup, sans alcohol. It wasn't until he put it in front of her that he wondered if she was even old enough to really appreciate coffee.
“Of course I am,” he said. “You’re awfully impatient for having taken half an hour to get ready.” Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration.
What the hell was this nonsense? Tyler could have alcohol in his coffee but she couldn’t? They had clearly drank a lot the previous night. Why else would she forget her first time? And why did he even want alcohol in his coffee? But whatever, if Tyler could do it so could she. Proving her point she grabbed the bottle and poured some into her own cup before taking a sip, slightly grimacing at the taste. Of course she drank, but it was mostly because it was the thing to do at parties. She didn’t actually like the taste.
Caroline’s cheeks reddened once again at Tyler’s comment. Did he really have to point out how long it took her? However she ignored the comment crossing her arms over her chest. “Well,” she began. “Go ahead.”
“I don’t know what’s going on,” he started, though he could guess that it had something to do with someone’s dreams. “But I’m 24. You are too.” Or, well, she would be soon. Which reminded him that her birthday was coming up. He’d have to start planning something, assuming she was back to normal by then. “Or at least, you are normally. Obviously not right now.” He paused, giving her a once over. “How old are you anyway?”
“What are you talking about?” Caroline replied clearly confused. “Did you like take drugs last night too?” Not that she even remembered being with Tyler the previous night. “I’m fifteen. Duh!” Even though what Tyler said sounded crazy. They were both teenagers. There was part of her that sort of believed him. Sort of.
Tyler ran a hand over his face. Fifteen. This was worse than he thought. The hell was he supposed to do with a fifteen year old girlfriend? “God I wish,” he muttered to himself. Other than the occasional joint, Tyler had never touched drugs in his life, but he had the feeling that it would be better than this. He was going to need more alcohol.
“I can show you my ID if you don’t believe me,” he said, and then paused. “Or I guess a calendar would probably be more helpful.”
Caroline was about to argue that he could very well have a fake ID. She had one after all. How else was she supposed to sneak into clubs? And yes she did sneak into clubs from a young age. “What’s a calendar going to prove?” Caroline asked. “Are you trying to tell me I’m in the future.”
“No, you’re not in the future,” Tyler said. At least, he didn’t think so, because that lead to all sorts of questions. Particularly what happened to his Caroline. “I’m saying that somehow you got turned into a teenage version of yourself. Magic or something, maybe. But it’s 2018.”
Magic? That didn’t sound real. But there was part of her that believed that maybe it could be. She wasn’t sure why she suddenly believed in magic. Or why Tyler’s explanation seemed possible. But it did. Instead of waiting for Tyler to show her a calendar though, she made her way to where her mom kept the calendar in the kitchen. “What the hell?!” She sad when saw the date. He was telling the truth. But she still had questions.
“So if it’s 2018 and I’m 24…. That still doesn’t explain why you were in my bed!”
Tyler cleared his throat, not entirely sure if he wanted to answer this question given how Caroline had reacted when she’d found him in her bed in the first place. The last thing he needed was a fifteen year old Caroline throwing herself at him. He took a swig straight from the bottle. “That’s because we’re dating, Caroline. We spend most nights together.”
It was a good thing Caroline wasn’t holding her coffee at the moment because she probably would have dropped it. “Shut up!” Caroline replied excitedly. “You’re my boyfriend? Oh my god! Do you know how long I’ve had a crush on you?!” As soon as the last sentence was out Caroline covered her mouth. Shit. Had she really just admitted that? “I mean that’s cool,” she said quickly, trying her best to sound cool and casual.
Tyler tried to hide his smile behind his coffee cup, though he didn’t think he did too good a job of it. Fifteen or not, it still felt good to hear how excited Caroline was that they were dating. “Yeah, Caroline, I’m your boyfriend. We actually dated for a couple years in high school too.” In… the future? “Soon. Or a while ago. I don’t know.” How the hell was he supposed to know how this worked? He was just a football coach.
“What?! No way!” Caroline was so excited she completely missed Tyler’s smile. “And we like… have sex?”
Tyler choked on his coffee, spitting some of it back up into his cup. “Had,” he said emphatically. “We’ve had sex, when we were the same age.”
“Ugh! That’s so unfair!” Caroline pouted. Though part of her was relieved. Even though she had apparently been sleeping with Tyler for years, as far as she was concerned she was still a virgin. She didn’t want to like make a fool of herself in front of Tyler who was clearly more experienced than her.
“You know what’s unfair? The fact that my super hot adult girlfriend is now fifteen.” And the fact that her teenage speech patterns were apparently rubbing off on him. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d called anyone super hot.
Well that certainly made Caroline feel better. And blush like crazy. “You think I’m super hot?”
“I’ve always thought you were super hot, Care,” Tyler said. “Seriously. Since like, the first grade.”
Caroline’s mouth almost dropped open for the second time. But she contained it. “Then why the hell did it take you so long to ask me out?!” Not that she even knew when exactly he asked her out. But she had been wanting him to since before she was old enough to date.
Tyler shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m not exactly the brightest knife in the shed,” he said, shrugging. Part of it was that he had wanted to play the field a little bit before finally getting together with Caroline. Not that there had been much playing the field to be had, outside of holding hands and the occasional kiss.
“You could have asked me out, you know,” he added.
“No way. Elena would never let me live it down,” which probably wasn’t true. Elena would want her to be happy. But whatever. Tyler didn’t have to know that. “Now tell me everything.”
