Who: Karigan and Haladreth
What: Advice seeking, and terrible relevations!
Where: Minas Tirith Citadel.
Karigan: *wanders around the halls, mostly properly dressed this time, a too-large castoff shirt she obviously stole from a male rider, and breeches, staring at statues*
Haladreth: *calls out quietly* You haunt the halls as surely as if you were a spirit.
Karigan: *glances behind her, and catches sight of Haladreth.* Maybe I am. Maybe I died here.
Haladreth: In soul perhaps, but not in body. *walks up to her* You smell of horses and hay.
Karigan: *could be mistaken for a young man, her hair is pulled back very tight and the shirt hides her more obviously feminine features* I was sleeping in the errand-rider stable.
Karigan: *appraises Haladreth* ...you are a ranger, by your accent.
Haladreth: An errand rider, then? *regards her, as if studying her features and reading her**is tall, and has the features commonly associated with Aragorn's kin* And yes, I am.
Karigan: ...I'm many things, ranger. *turns her back to Haladreth, goes back to gazing at a statue, maybe so Haladreth won't get too long a look at her eyes* The errand-rider captain, among them.
Haladreth: Karigan, then. I am Haladreth.
Karigan: I've heard your name somewhere. *vaguely* One of Elessar's many kin, I take it.
Haladreth: *chuckles* Of his kin, though not related saved perhaps distantly. They say my house can be traced to the Haladin, but that is neither here nor there.
Karigan: ...a noble house, then. *watching Haladreth out of the corner of her eye* What brings you out here so late, ranger?
Haladreth: If living in the forest in small homes is noble. *snorts* I could not sleep, my mind has been elsewhere of late *or elsewho!*
Karigan: *wry* Is it fear or love that drove you to these heartless halls?
Haladreth: *chuckles* Fear of, perhaps.
Karigan: ...now why would you be afraid of a thing like that? *glances back at Haladreth* Love never hurt anyone.*the sarcasm is heavy*
Haladreth: *snorts* Perhaps love is too strong a word. Lust then.
Karigan: *half-muttered* ...so you northerners are human after all. *in a clearer tone* there's brothels, some with men, if that's your trouble.
Haladreth: ....*purses her lips* Rather, that I do not wish for such feelings. It is the custom of my family, that such dealings remain in wedlock. Were it as easy as going to a brothel, I would have my problem taken care of, for the one I lust after works in a finer one.
Karigan: *quirks an eyebrow* ...are you so open with all strangers or did I just pick a lucky topic?
Haladreth: You just picked a lucky topic, and my tongue is loose this eve.
Haladreth: It is not normally so. Perhaps you are easy to talk to
Karigan: *almost smiles* Well, a word of advice, you'd best put your fancy out of your head. No one making good money in the fine brothels will leave the life to live in the woods, as you say.
Karigan: ...besides, the clientel of any men in those brothels would probably not suit such a person to your... ah... type.
Haladreth: *laughs!*
Karigan: ...not that I know anything about brothels, of course. *scrutinizes a bust of an unflattering king with an enormous cleft in his chin* No use for them.
Haladreth: You've no desire for man or woman, then?
Karigan: ...wouldn't do me any good even if I did, I was born in the South. *gazing straight ahead of her*
Haladreth: *looks at her like 'so'?'* The one I refer to, the Madam is easterling, and they've women and men from south, east, west and north. I suppose she...takes advantage of men who wish to sleep with the enemy, and the exotic, so to speak.
Karigan: ...I know the brothel. *pauses to look back at Haladreth* I mean to say that regardless of any desires I might have, it would be too painful to attempt such a thing. My... grandmother... was a traditionalist.
Haladreth: Ah. *nods her head* That may be my problem, too
Karigan: ...*frowns at her* ...how so? I did not think any place north of Harondor committed such barbary on children.
Haladreth: Tradition, I mean. Being taught such a thing. Not..whatever your grandmother did *eyes her* What did she do?
Karigan: ...like many southern-born girls who are expected to marry, virginity is to be assured at any cost. It is common practice to... alter the body of young girls so that when they are women, they must be cut open to have intercourse.
Haladreth: *openly stares at her*
Karigan: ...well, I ought to say, only common among those with money or blood to make them valuable commodities someday. *goes back to staring at the bust, to avoid looking at Haladreth*
HAladreth: That is a...horrible thing to do!
Haladreth: *sounds..rather outraged and disgusted*
Karigan: *mildly* ...yes, I think so too. The man who tried to, ah, help me, when I discovered my condition, did a bad job, the scars healed wrong.
Haladreth: *winces* There is naught a good healer could do?
Karigan: ...it was a long time ago, I doubt it.
Haladreth: That is a pity. Both for the barbarism that was inflicted upon you, and what you have lost because of it. *smiles gently* I was married once, and had a baby. Both are beautiful things you had a right to and are now denied.
Karigan: ...I try not to think about that part, I've lost enough without remembering that too. *bitterly* Other women have all the luck, as it were.
Haladreth: *deadpan* They are both dead now. But you are right, I am lucky to have experienced what I was able to experience, and I am grateful for that, and saddened that you cannot
Karigan: *bluntly* everyone dies, even people like you and me. *moving on to gaze at another statue* In the grand scheme of things, you've not so very long to suffer, you know.
Haladreth: It would be better to know at least a little joy, that that in your waning years, you have something to temper the bitterness.. *touches a statue lightly*
Karigan: ...maybe for some.
Haladreth: *chuckles wryly* I will likely be the last remaining, after all I care about has passed.
Karigan: *folding her arms over her chest* All I loved is gone from the world and even my city is changed beyond recognition. I'm only still around out of sheer spite.
Haladreth: *smirks wryly* And perhaps in time you will haunt this place until it is dust, just to spite the descedents of the king
Karigan: *casually* Now when did I say anything about the king? *ordoeshetalkaboutme?*
Haladreth: He's mentioned your name before, that is how I knew it. *winks*
Karigan: *even tones, her face betraying nothing* really, what does he say about me
Haladreth: That you are a capable rider, quite infuriating, but trusted.
Karigan: *mostly to herself* Not trusted, not really.
Karigan: You can tell him I called him a deceptive ass, if he asks.
Haladreth: He did mention you had quite the tongue on you.
Karigan: *acidicly* Sharp enough to cut his ego? That I doubt
