This place is certainly strange, but I shall make the best of it. Merry, would it be all right if I was to work in your establishment for awhile? I'm afraid I have no idea how one dances with poles, and I have no wish to learn.

I did not care for the looks that man gave me one bit.

I think it'd be best to find somewhere else to stay.

Of course, my lady. We have lots of space. Would you be willing to work as hostess? It'd be much the same as what you did in your father's hall during feasts except with the addition of taking people's money. Boring work for a shieldmaiden but we certainly need the help. And you'll be a lot better at it than Pippin, that's for sure.

Best to stay away from the pole-dancing.

Thank you so much, Merry. I really appreciate it, hostess would be fine.

Not at all. You really will be doing us a favor. We need more staff, the Unnamed Pub is beginning to get popular. Probably because Pippin regularly dances on the tables when he's tipsy.

I imagine that must be nightly, then.

You assume correctly. Still, it brings in the customers. The humans here seem as fascinated with hobbitfolk as they were in Rohan.

Now Merry, you do yourself too little credit. I'm sure your brew is wonderful.

How do I get to where you are? I am in a place called Los Angeles, and no one seems to know where this pub is.

Of course it is! I couldn't in good conscience sell anything less.

I'd better come find you and bring you back, my lady. Meanwhile you'd best have a look at this terrible [website] and read the section on portkeys.

New arrival, huh? It's pretty overwhelming when we first get here, at least, it was for me. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. You need any help?

It's strange, especially due to the circumstances of my leaving. We had joined battle, and I believed I had died. Then I woke up here. I suppose that takes more getting used to than this.

I understand. I was taken from a battle too, and there was a moment where I wondered if I'd been hit from behind and not noticed. Except I doubt the darkspawn would have taken my pants.

I'm Alistair. Nice to meet you, and glad we're not dead.

Eowyn. I am also glad to not be dead. And to not have had my trousers stolen.

Terrific, Alistair, mention the trousers first thing to every pretty woman you meet forever, brilliant plan...

So, uh, you were in a battle. Are you a warrior, then? What sort of battle was it?

I can read all of that too, sir.

I am a warrior, after a fashion. I stole with Merry into my uncle's riders during the Battle of Minas Tirith. I defended him against the Witch King, slaying the enemy and the foul beast he rode into battle with.

Oh. Uh. Right. Thought I'd deleted that. I'll never get the hang of these blighted computers. Sorry.

Oh, you're from Merry's world then? I like him, he and his cousin have a terrific tavern, I go there often. And that certainly sounds like being a warrior to me. It must have been quite the battle.

I am. Merry fought by my side. And it was, I suppose. At the time I tried to not think of that. I tried to just remember the training I had, and to not be frightened.

I'm not sure how well I succeeded on that score.

Most people are frightened going into battle, you know. I've been at it for years, and I still feel my stomach drop somewhere into my feet every time. If you went anyway, despite that, then you succeeded.

And Merry fought beside you? Wow, he hadn't mentioned he'd done any fighting. He seems so...I don't know, domestic. Pippin, too. I figured it was a hobbit thing.

Merry was utterly fearless. I know Pippin had traveled with Gandalf the Grey, so he likely was defending the Keep from the other side. So many died that day. I believe we carried it, but I had long since fallen by the end.

I wonder if Lord Aragorn survived, and Legolas and Gimli. I have no doubt of my brother, he's far too stubborn for Death to take him so easily.

Have you asked Merry? Perhaps he knows how it ended, depending on when he was brought here. We don't all seem to be brought from the same times and places as my comrades. Most of the people I knew back in my world knew a me who was like me but not me. ...and thaaaaaaat came out even more confusing, didn't it?

I should speak with him at some point about it. It is difficult to recall, though. My uncle was killed in the melee.

I suppose it should, but after everything else that fortune has sent our way, it really seems about right, doesn't it?

I'm sorry to hear that. Perhaps the vortex will pick him up and bring him here as well, even so. It's tricky that way.

Pretty much!

Eh, don't think twice about it. If people hadn't helped me out when I first arrived...actually, never mind what happened when I first arrived, I already dug a deep enough hole for myself the first time I mentioned that.
