The military has been enlisting women since the 1940s. There was a second world war going on, and with all these men off in battle, the upper Brass realized they needed people to do the 'off field' work: building, taking files, shipping supplies, so they started recruiting women. Low and behold, many of them found out that females workers as a whole were just as profficient as men and it was decided to continue taking women in 'non combat' related military jobs.
