26 NOVEMBER 2017 | ON BASE ROSE HATHAWAY ✦ DAMON SALVATORE BFFs REUNITED AFTER MONTHS APART PG | Reference to violence Complete |
Rose's arrival in Tumbleweed might have gone a lot differently if her memories of those months from waking up in the pod to, she guessed, being sent home hadn't come rushing back the instead the portal dropped her, rather unceremoniously, in the middle of a suddenly familiar looking base. Every instinct she had still screamed at her to fight as she faced that "welcoming committee" again, but she remembered all too well how quickly her usual method of dealing with things would earn her an unwanted nap. Gritting her teeth, she'd held her hands up and, for once in her life, gone quietly. The familiarity didn't make being shut in that room any easier to take, even with ample distractions, but she had to admit that she felt better knowing Damon was right outside her door. She couldn't see him or touch him in any way, but if there was anyone still in Tumbleweed who Rose knew would fight to keep her safe, it was Damon Salvatore. Over the best several years, especially, Rose wasn't used to trusting anyone, but there were a few select people who'd found a place into that elite group and Damon topped that list right now. It seemed as though he and Emmeline were the only ones left of their little group, anyway, at least out of the ones she'd let herself get close to. Christian didn't count, happy as she'd been to see his name on the network. Not that she'd admit to it, anyway. Finally, her time in solitary confinement came to an end, the door opened and there he was. Rose broke into a relieved grin at the sight of him, rushing forward and throwing her arms around him, barely even pausing to take in a face she hadn't seen in a good 6 months, save that tiny image on the network. Maybe she somehow hadn't remembered her life here until a few days ago when she'd come back, but it still felt like months since she'd seen him and there was an irrational part of her that just wanted to cling to him and never let go again. Not that she was admitting to that out loud, either. The second that door was opened, Damon met her at the edge of the threshold with open arms. It hadn’t been the same without her around. Between the loss of Rose and Daisy, almost simultaneously, he and Emmeline had been wholly shakened -- shattered, even. They had each other, but his sister from another mister had friends from her world to lean on, too. Caroline wasn’t exactly his biggest fan, and he wasn’t about to resume trying to worm his way onto her good side again. He could take a hint. It had bordered on a year between her disappearance and return. He realized that as he latched on tightly, grateful that he didn’t have to be so mindful of his own strength. For that moment, Damon was thoroughly glad he hadn’t given in to take the cure when Daisy had it. Now, the cure was buried in his soap dish. Elena didn’t need it, but maybe one day Caroline might change her mind about immortality. “You let me know when you’re ready,” Damon said quietly into her ear as he embraced her. She wasn’t alone in wanting to be practically glued together. He didn’t cope well with people disappearing on him, whatever the reason, and latched on fast when something precious was returned to him. “Get you another burger, then we can meet up with M&M.” It felt like a really long time that they held onto each other like that. Emmeline had already told her about all the people who weren’t here. It felt overwhelming if she let herself think about it. There’d been some other familiar faces on the network, but out of the people she felt truly close to, Damon and Emme were it. No Daisy. No Oliver or Lissa or Jaina. If she let herself think about it, Rose thought she might suffocate under the weight of all those losses. She tried, instead, to focus on the present and the friends there were still here. Maybe the others she loved would come back, too, like she had, but Rose didn’t live her life on hopes and maybes. Damon was here now and he was real, tangible. “I hope you saved me some pie,” she said when they finally parted again, ignoring the fact that Max had visited and brought her some while she was still in quarantine. That was different. If Damon and Emmeline had gone and had Thanksgiving without her less than a week ago, the least they could do was hook her up with more leftovers. Much like Rose, Damon didn’t hang his hopes on possibilities. Did he catch himself wide awake in the middle of the night wishing for another familiar sight? Sure, but that was as close to human as he could get. When someone disappeared, he and Emmeline would sit up and drink themselves stupid, then never speak of it again. It wasn’t to say he didn’t have friends--Jo, Rogue, hell, he’d even gotten to know some people with a penchant for good bourbon--but they couldn’t compare to the bond he’d had with his flower girls and Emmeline. Once they detached from one another, he turned to sling an arm around her shoulders and gave her a nudge to coax her into walking. “Like I’d ever let you down. C’mon, let’s get your crap and get out of here. The best part about this place is leaving it with someone badass.” “Yeah, that is the best part, but I guess I’ll just have to settle for you,” Rose teased. She never could resist giving him a hard time. She didn’t have much crap to speak of, so it didn’t take long for them to be on their way. “So, what’s changed?” She asked as they walked. “Any cool new places you wanna show me?” “Oh, I can think of a few…” He trailed off as they ventured out to collect what little she had to her name. He would fill her in on anything she wanted, not just the changes in the town. It had, for instance, increased in size since she was there last. Most of the places she remembered had remained, but the size was the biggest change. As for their personal lives, that was best saved for the car ride leading up to more burgers and later on? Some much needed bourbon. |
