Since their departure from the town at the break of dawn, Nerys had said very little to the others beyond her initial introduction as a knight in service of the Arl. But after formalities had been exchanged, she found herself with little to say, other than directing people toward stable footing on the path. She had taken point in this mission, being the only member of the group who was familiar with the lay of the land. Granted, even if she wasn't the most knowledgeable, she would have taken charge of the situation, anyway -- she was admittedly almost as territorial as the hounds she reared. This was her home to defend, after all. There were others in the Wardens' company that were able scouts, but Nerys kept to the front of the group, with Cafall sniffing out the terrain first. The sun had not yet reached its apex by the time the party had approached the edge of the orchards, where the forest's natural line began to thin out, leaving a sparse border between the even rows of apple trees and the wild oaks. As she came to a halt, she raised a hand to signal the stop of the rest of the party and to urge their silence. From where they stopped in the brush, Nerys couldn't see anything between the thick foliage of the yard, but she didn't need sight to know that there were darkspawn lurking in the area. Cafall's ears were pinned back, a growl rumbling low in his deep throat, the only confirmation of her suspicions that she could trust. He wasn't the only indicator in the group, though the knight couldn't be certain just how acute the Grey Wardens' sixth senses were. Up until now, it was only rumor that the elite soldiers of Amaranthine could detect darkspawn -- and vice versa -- now would have been the opportune moment to see whether or not that was truth. She turned first to Coan, the only familiar face in the bunch, searching his expression to see if he displayed any awareness of their enemy. Much as Nerys had considered her issues with him resolved after their talk the previous day, she still felt an irrational twinge of frustration upon looking at him, so the glance was brief. The other Warden was a little more difficult to spot given her height, but Nerys looked for the young woman's reaction, as well. Regardless, they had reached their intended destination, and her most significant role in the plan was complete. Now it was a matter of awaiting further orders from the Wardens, as reluctant as she was to relinquish authority to outsiders. As far as she knew, they were meant to split up even further into pairs to circle the perimeter, though she wasn't about to make the call when it wasn't her responsibility. She snapped her fingers to call Cafall back to her side, standing at attention before the Grey Wardens, looking between them expectantly, "Sers?" |
