Week Four - Friday
Characters: Alice and Holly.
Location: Siena Suites; Alice's Suite.
Summary: Shortly after speaking with Jack, Holly decides to pay Alice a visit and try to convince her that he's not a guy by bumming a tampon. Little does Holly know, Alice started her period that morning.
Rating: R for teh swarez.
After Jack left him alone in the Nevada heat, Holly stared forlornly at the pool in the center of the courtyard and decided he should probably head back to his room inside, where it was cool. But as much as he'd wanted to be alone all that morning, loneliness was beginning to set in. He didn't exactly want to retire to his room, where all he'd be able to do was stare at the wall, but he definitely didn't want to go out somewhere either, not alone. The fact that he didn't really know anyone in the group was glaring at that point. Part of him was still confused as to why he'd been dumb enough to join the museum crowd, but the logical part of his brain told him he'd be alone either way. Penny was dead, after all.
Then another thought occurred to him, and Holly gathered up his courage as he started walking down the outside hallway to the suite he knew was Alice's. She was the one who doubted his gender, and she also seemed to be in charge of things, so he needed to prove to her he was what he wasn't. That is, he needed to convince Alice he was a woman. Holly wasn't dumb, he knew it would be difficult, but he felt it could be a huge thorn in his side if Alice wasn't dealt with. No doubt she had a lot of clout with the other survivors, so if she decided to be against him for whatever reason (like he was a liar), she could turn others against him.
As he knocked on Alice's door, Holly took a deep, calming breath. He could do this. It was a moment before the door finally opened.
Alice stood there with befuddled expression, looking only a little less for wear than she had earlier that week. Her bruises were healing, and she was finally able to wear a light shirt over her injured shoulder without wanting to claw at it in its itchiness. The befuddlement, however, had nothing to do with her current physical condition: she definitely wasn't the most social creature, but the last person she expected on the opposite side of her door was the leggy drag queen.
"Can I help you?" she asked slowly.
Holly immediately noticed Alice's eye, wondering what exactly had happened to her. He'd heard she got into some sort of trouble, which he wasn't surprised about, but otherwise the details were lost on him. After he got over the mild shock at seeing her healing bruise, Holly got the urge to turn heel and run, but no. No, Holly.
"Oh, good," he said, acting like he was very relieved to see her. "I hope I'm not imposing by asking, but do you have a tampon to spare, by any chance? I misplaced mine in the move and I just can't find them." He offered Alice a little smile, trying to look sheepish. Alice's expression turned sour almost instantly, and without another word she immediately shut the door in his face.
"...Uh!" was all he could say at first, too stunned to think to try and shove his foot in the door (which would hurt, he was definitely not wearing the right shoes for that), or even protest. That is, until a moment later when he regained his wits. "Hey!" Holly knocked loudly, even though Alice was likely still close to the door. "Please, I don't know anyone else around here!"
Alice opened the door swiftly, scowling at him, her eyes flashing angrily. "What the fuck do you think you're playin' at?" she snapped, the hand holding onto the molding around the door white with her grip. "Are you fuckin' kiddin' me? Seriously? Seriously?"
"I know what you told Jed, and it's ... it's really judgmental!" Holly's eyebrows drew together, both because he was trying to play that he was hurt, but also because he was getting scared very quickly. Alice had pointed a gun at him the last time they'd met and he wasn't about to underestimate her anytime soon. She could crush him. "It's because of my voice, right? That's the only thing I can think of."
"Look, hooker," Alice said harshly, her voice dripping with venom, "I ain't about to go tellin' everybody you're Adam an' not Eve, but if you're seriously gonna look me in the eye and tell me you're a girl, I'm gonna slap you. I've been in this city for almost ten years; you think I ain't seen a Queen before?"
"Excuse me?" Holly asked, after his jaw dropped. "Who're you calling a hooker?" Even though he was glaring daggers at Alice, he didn't dare step up to get into her face.
"Exactly. Excuse you," Alice said, moving to shut the door again.
Holly's hand shot out to hit the door, pushing on it to keep it open. "Don't you dare, you bitch!" He was angry now, and logical thought wasn't about to save him. "What gives you the right to ignore me? I thought this little group was about helping each other!"
"Forgive me if I don't open my arms out to liars!" Alice shouted back, hardly caring if anyone around could hear them. Hell, let them hear. "You tried to sabotage our signs, and then you just come up with this big stupid sob story expectin' me to forgive and forget? Why the fuck would I trust a word comin' out of your lyin' mouth, huh!? And then you have the fuckin' audacity to ask me for a tampon!?"
"I was scared! I thought you guys were just another gang, or maybe a fucking cult! I decided to give you guys a chance because I'm desperate!" His hand not pressed against the door balled into a fist. "What's your proof I'm lying?! You don't have any!"
"What's your proof you're not!?" Alice countered, positively spitting in her rage. "You wanna fuckin' prove to me you're not lyin!? Drop your pants."
Immediately, Holly's expression went as neutral as he could manage, which wasn't very. He still looked angry, which showed clearly in his eyes, but he also knew he was trapped like a rat in a corner. "You gonna drop yours?" he asked, taking his hand off of Alice's door to put more space between them. "What if I say I don't believe you're a woman?"
That was all it took. Alice threw the door open, stepping forward and shoving him backward. Her injured shoulder screamed in protest, but she hardly cared. "How dare you!" she shouted. "How fuckin' dare you!"
Being shoved while wearing heels wasn't an ideal situation, so it was all Holly could do not to fall on his ass or break an ankle. "Wah!" He almost reached out to steady himself on Alice, but thought better of it. "You asked me first! You can't get angry!"
"I was married!" she shouted furiously. "I had a daughter! I lost everything!"
The confessions stunned Holly at first, then wrenched at his heartstrings. "You don't think I did?" he asked in a quiet voice, sounding much more sad than angry.
"Don't you change the subject!" Alice cried, all but shaking. After the most upsetting week in history, this boy coming to stir up shit was all it seemed to take for her to lose it. She didn't have the energy to deal with this. "Fuck you. Leave me the hell alone."
"Whatever," Holly replied, stepping away from Alice while pushing some of his long, curled hair over his shoulder, "keep your goddamn tampons." He hadn't even finished his sentence before Alice had turned right around into her room again, slamming the door behind her so hard that the windows rattled. The sound made him wince, but he didn't stop walking away toward his suite, jaw set.
