WNBA training camp: A look around the league by Jayda Evans May 25, 2009
As in Seattle, teams across the WNBA wrapped up their first week of camp on Sunday.
"It's just a week?" said Storm guard Sue Bird, who joined her team after play in Russia. "It does [feel like more]. It feels like we've been here for a long time, but camp is going well."
In Indiana, coach Lin Dunn said via her Twitter account that G Briann January, a Spokane native and Arizona State alum, is doing great. "Combo guard with speed; toughness and skills!" Dunn continued.
January was drafted with the sixth overall pick to be Indiana's future point guard with Australian veteran Tully Bevilaqua nearing the end of her career. She did not appear in Indiana's exhibition opener against Minnesota on Saturday. But Lynx rookie Renee Montgomery did.
In Los Angeles, coach Michael Cooper said he's keeping his starting rotation open. But he told reporters that things are clearing a bit. Former Storm guard Betty Lennox is among the players being considered. She could play heavy minutes at PG and said via text that she's enjoying camp.
Phoenix seems to have been cursed after two-time MVP Lauren Jackson opted to return to Seattle and not play in the desert. Fellow Aussie Penny Taylor is having ankle surgery and hasn't communicated with the team since December about possibly returning and F Murriel Page and C/F Nicole Ohlde suffered injuries.
In New York, newspapers checked in on Anne Donovan, the Storm's former head coach who became a Liberty assistant.
"I was in Charlotte, and I had been sitting on my couch since the Olympics,'' Donovan said in the Newsday article. "Enough time had passed that I was looking for my next opportunity. I didn't think I would come back and be an assistant."
