Who: Merry and Luke
Where: The pub
What: A friendly drink
When: This afternoon
Rating: Low?
Open: No
Status: Ongoing

Many strange things had happened in Luke's long, long years. He'd never discovered the mystery of his apparent agelessness, and after a couple hundred years, he'd stopped looking for the answer. In the Underground, weird and inexplicable was normal. But this...to have gone to sleep in his apartment and to have woken up on some sort of island? This was weird and inexplicable on an entirely new level.

He hadn't known where to start, but he'd been invited to the pub for a friendly drink, and that was as good a place as any. Better, in fact. At least a drink would fortify him for whatever was to come. He wondered if there was a way back to the Underground, or if this was simply another part of it. He wondered if he even wanted to go back. After 935 years, he was very tired of war.

He pushed that aside and entered the pub. To his delight, it was very much like the pubs he remembered from England. He glanced around, taking in the patrons, and then took a seat at the bar, hoping he'd be able to recognize Merry. More likely it would be Merry to recognize him; he was an unfamiliar face, after all.

A pint, that's what he was after. He had a taste for whiskey and brandy, as most Englishmen did, but a pint of something very stout sounded good to him. Nothing like a pint for times of uncertainty...tea was his other standby, but that just wasn't going to do the trick today.

Most everyone who on the island came to the pub one time or another, so it was a good guess to assume that Merry knew pretty much everyone on the island. He was behind the bar, wiping up the spills from the counter with a wet cloth, when he saw the man enter who he had spoken to on the network.

He smiled broadly, making his way towards him. He'd pretty much gotten used to the fact that even though he was an exceptionally tall hobbit, he was still a hobbit, and he would be perpetually looking up at all the Big People who happened to be here. This man was no different.

"Welcome," he smiled, bending into a deep and polite bow. Hobbits were, after all, known for their manners and hospitality. "You must be Mr. Luke. Meriadoc Brandybuck, at your service."

OOC: Man I am sorry, I could not get IJ to load up!

Luke was surprised by the bow, but only because it had been many long years since he had actually been greeted with one.

"Nice to meet you face to face, Meriadoc." He smiled, although he was a bit taken aback by the shorter stature of the man before him. Still, he looked like a decent enough fellow, and he had invited Luke here for a drink. One thing Luke had learned not to do was make assumptions based off of appearance, especially after his time in the Underground.

"I thought I'd take you up on your offer. Do you happen to have a good stout?" He thought the hobbit probably would. This looked like the kind of place that would have an excellent stout.

Merry grinned at his question, and hurried back behind the bar. "Oh, aye, we do. We have Guinness on draught, and Murphy's in bottles, and we have our own brew that's not half bad, either. Do you have a preference?"

He hopped up on the little stool he used to make himself just a little taller and make his job a bit easier, grabbing a pint glass and looking at the man curiously.

"So you've just arrived here, then? It is a strange place, I must say, but not a bad one, really. I mean, odd things happen here, but there's a good mix of people, and for the most part we get along well. Where are you from?"

Luke appreciated Merry's enthusiasm about the stout. "The house brew, if you don't mind." Drinking amongst locals was the best way to get the feel of them, he found.

He nodded at Merry's question, trying once again to puzzle out how he had woken up on an island. He remembered arguing with Skye, a fellow arms dealer and rebel, about her tactics against the Whisperers and the battles she was raging through the subway system of the city --

He shook his head. They had finished yelling at each other, and he'd had two very quick glasses of whiskey, and gone to bed. And now here he was.

"It certainly is a beautiful enough place, I'll give it that. I haven't had a lot of chance to explore yet, but that's next on my list." He shook his head again. "Suppose I should introduce myself around, as it may take some time to find a way back home. Which is in America, in a city in the Underground."

He frowned a little. He wasn't certain, but he had a feeling that Merry came from someplace very different than that. "To be honest, I'm not even sure I'd like to go home. And where are you from, Master Brandybuck?"

Merry began to draw the pint as he listened to the man's words. He'd heard of America from many of the others here, but he really had no clear idea of where it was. He was a well-traveled hobbit, to be sure, but some places were far beyond his knowledge. He did know that there were many people from America here, but the name meant little to him.

He sat the pint in front of the man before answering his question.

"Buckland," he answered. "In the Shire. My father's the Master of Buckland, and I'll follow him, in time. Not in any hurry to inherit, though."

He looked at him for a moment, wondering if he'd have to clarify. Most of the Big People, even i his day, didn't know where the Shire was, unless they were from Bree, which was so close that they couldn't ignore it.

"It's far to the North West," he said finally. "West of the Misty Mountains and Rivendell. If you know where Bree is, well, it's just west of there."

"We've shires in England, but the names you use aren't familiar to me." He wondered how different shires could be. The ones in England were generally pleasant, hilly places. Lots of sheep, that sort of thing.

"I can't say I know of the place, unfortunately. It sounds pleasant. How long have you been here, Mr Brandybuck?" This place sounded very strange, and so far no one had been able to say how they had come to be here.

"Also, is there anything in particular I should know?"

"Well, we've only got the one, so far as I know," he smiled, sipping his own drink.

"Not very long, really. A few weeks, a month, maybe? But it's really a pretty nice place. I'm happy to be here, I just miss my friends a bit."

Huh. Stuff he should know.

"Um, don't go too near the spire unless you want to get turned into something unnatural. Other than that, I guess just be nice to people as you can?"
