Team Cauldron Entry (FIC): "Sing A Mad Rebellion" by Femmequixotic
Title: Sing A Mad Rebellion
Author: [info]femmequixotic
Team: Cauldron
Genre: Alive and Kicking
Prompts: Secrets and Lies, Assassination
Rating/Warnings/Kinks: NC-17, *Non-Snarry pairing (non-explicit), het mentions, bisexuality, minor character death, politics, semi-epilogue compliance, violence*
Word Count: ~56,000
Author Notes/Disclaimers/Betas: A huge thank you to my betas [info]noeon and [info]goseaward, and much gratitude to Noe for coaxing this story into being. Massive thanks also to the mods for their patience.
This fic owes a great debt to such works as Orwell's 1984, Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, the film The Manchurian Candidate and the works of John LeCarre, all of which in some manner provided inspiration for the conception and writing of the story. Danny Foster (and his wife Kirsty) are taken from the BBC series Party Animals which revolves around the lives of young Labour and Conservative political researchers and lobbyists. Nemworth Interrogation Unit and various other MI5-related elements are taken from or influenced by the BBC series Spooks. In addition, I must give major props to the highly informative and incredibly helpful factsheets hosted on the website of the United Kingdom Parliament, which, when printed, fill two reams of paper and a four-inch binder. The title is a nod toward a fragment of verse by John Taylor.

Summary: The State Security Forces come not in the middle of a dark night as one might expect, but on a bright, sunshiny Sunday morning just after the sausages are set on the kitchen table.

I cannot say that I've read your story yet (I'm on it, I swear) but I just wanted to say that I'm so excited to read a new fic of yours, and that both your notes and summary have me breathless with anticipation!

Will return shortly with an actual comment!

Best way to end the games! This was such a great story. Every moment had my heart stopping; I didn't know what to believe. Multiple times you tricked me about who was on whose side. I was really surprised to see characters like Charlotte actually having a roll (I should have figured with all the hinting, but I can be a little slow). As sad as I was to see so many people die, I found it very fitting to your story and the plot. I am glad that you ended it the way you did...I don't think my heart could take any more! I loved how Severus and Harry's relationship evolved - and I am content and satisfied with the idea of them being part of a "family" now. Thank you for such a wonderful story! Let's be for real - I loved every moment of it; I just couldn't stop reading!

This story was astonishing. Tense, complicated, passionate, and heart-wrenching. My throat clammed up entirely and tears stung my eyes as I read about Harry sitting beside Teddy's bed. So very topical too.

I whipped over to your lj to see where you lived, and was astonished that you weren't British - I can only say, as a Brit, that all your research has really paid off, and I really appreciate it.

Thank you - a truly excellent story. I'll be rereading this.

If I didn't know this hadn't happened, I would believe it was true. Your attention to detail is exquisite as always. So dark, so painful and horrible in places but it feels so right in the end. My heart was broken over and over again with each death and the horrors the government was perpetrating. Such a carefully woven plot-who was double crossing who, who was really a good guy, and of course the wonderful way you brought Harry and Severus together. Excellent fic, as always.

Outstanding adventure! I could see the history happening just that way: the fragmented wizarding factions doing more harm than good until they were all lost. You really made the entire, huge cast come alive. I loved seeing the old school rivals come together to fight for the rights of wizards. (Pansy was fabulous! And I have a secret soft spot for Anthony Goldstein. :-) Scorpius and James were adorable! And Harry was perfect--older, somewhat wiser, still sacrificing himself for his people. The raw need between himself and Severus was palpable. 10+++!!!

Jesus, Femme. This is so great and I really hate that I watched you work on it for so long on twitter and all I can come up with is "yay!" but yay! I hardly ever read Snape/Harry anymore, but I totally blew off work all morning to read this. It's so grim and gorgeous and yay!

If John le Carré wrote Snarry, this would be it. I've been eagerly awaiting your fic since seeing your bunny on the team comm, and am delighted to say it surpasses my (very high) expectations. Brilliant!

This was really really intense and brilliant written. It left me also a bit confuse about some things, like I wondered about all the smoking, especially in the ELA when they have barely enough money for food (and how could Severus pay a rent boy?).
I still don't really know why the wizarding world felt pressed to "join" the Muggle world/the government even though the world economy collapsed - isn't the wizarding world more or less complete autarchic from the Muggle world? They have their own money etc.
Interesting was the Muggle/Wizard conflict as in Voldemort and his followers with the muggle-hate and Syme with his wizard-hate. Both was extreme and brought only pain.
As a German, grown up in a land with a fascistic past, I can't help it but to draw comparisons between the Third Reich and the coalition in your story. As for myself I think that the Britains, who had to endure so much through the Nazi-regime, are more opposed against a regime which acts like the Nazis and terrorise wizards and also muggles alike. Would they let one man with an extreme hate (Syme) get all the power until it's too late when they have witnessed a similar occurrence in World War Two and fought against these circumstances?
That's what crossed my mind when I read your story. I don't know if anybody else thought something similar or if I interpret too much but I spent an afternoon mesmerized in front of my computer.

Wow. That was quite the ride. I loved this future-verse, it seems to plausible in a Muggles-are-evil-and-let's-suppress-magic kind of way. The prison breakout was nail-biting. And Pansy, I adore your Pansy. I loved that it was tied to revenge for the bridge collapse, I'd be looking for villains too.
And poor Harry, thinking he's doing it the right way but getting nowhere.
I'm pretty sure this was my first Snarry-hayloft, so thank you for that - it makes up for your rather high body count.

Thank you so much for this story, which is the best fic of any kind I've read in - ever, maybe. Gorgeous, painful, lovely ... wow! (And now the "please confirm you are a human" message seems extra-creepy after reading this.)

This was a very powerful and gripping read. I was entranced from the first page.

Your Prime Minister Symes reminded me a little of John Simms' The Master from the finale of S3 of Dr Who, he had the same manic drive to wipe all magic out as did The Master wanting to wipe out the human race.

Absolutely brilliant end to the snarry games :)

That was absolutely fantastic. I read it straight through, barely breathing the whole time. I cannot believe the complexity of the world you created. It seemed so horrible real and possible. You are such an excellent writer, and I adored your Harry - world-weary, but still strong and fierce and righteous. And your Snape, my god. Their scenes together were perfect, and the smut - I honestly cannot say enough about it. It's been awhile since I've read sex scenes that...er.. affected me that much.

Such brilliant, shocking, twisted and yet hopeful ride. A Masterpiece.

You gave me a sleepless night you evil woman! I've been in a mood for something like this for some time. Listening to Muse's Uprising, bugging my sister to finally use it in a Potter vid.
I noticed that you have a great talent for character death. I can't stomach it in most of the fics I read, but in yours it doesn't hurt so much. I don't know how you do it.

Oh my god. This. This was INCREDIBLE. I was SO looking forward to your story ever since you posted your plotbunny at the comm, and I knew it'd be amazing, but this? This was infinite times better than anything I had expected. Seriously. I'm blown away. Completely.

This whole dark dystopian world you created, the plot, the characters (and not just Snape and Harry - what a wonderful supporting cast!), everything. It was all so gripping and heartwrenching and felt so awfully real and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And amidst all the darkness and despair and heartbreaking there were these moments of love and hope and then that hopeful, uplifting, realistically "happy" ending. That "Perhaps" at the end was perfect. No, the whole thing was perfect. I was so in love I didn't want the story ever ever ever to end. EVER. It was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

And gah, I'm just rambling incoherently here and seem to be unable to give any real feedback. *gives up* But god, I loved this beyond words. LOVED.

wow this was amazing! I love the world that you created here. The way you incorporated so many characters, their relationships really made the story feel full, rich and complete. The relationship between Severus and Harry was lovely to read how they fluctuated between a slow burn and a blazing inferno. there were moments of great heartbreak with Teddy and Astoria and the characters histories. I also loved the gritty, realistic, flow of this story.

Incredible job on this!

no wonder this was saved for last. holy crap, femme. and really my favourite thing was that i came out of it caring about zach, about pansy, even astoria, who only said about a dozen words, seemed like flesh and blood. wonderful.

i guess all that's left to say is thank you, thank you for writing such excellent fucking fic.

Awesome job!!! I liked the echoes of V for Vendetta, and it made me want to watch MI5 and Spooks! The thing I was struck by is that it's not so far-fetched, really--we lost a lot of civil liberties under Bush in the US, and there were many abuses of power, detainees, discrimination against ethnic and religious groups. All as a result of 9/11. It wouldn't be such a big step to more of the same in the name of the economic crisis. Thank god another Republican wasn't elected. I don't think we'll go there under Obama.

But politics aside, the bit about how the magical world was antiquated and gullible, also struck home.

I loved Harry's character--still fighting the good fight and dealing with the judgments of the wizarding world for his actions.

And I loved the ELA--so desparate, savvy, committed, loving, harsh--all embodied in your wonderful characters--Hermione, Pansy, Justin, Dennis, all of them. Such a great gritty world, and so many details to make it real.

And Severus, sigh, Severus. Such a wonderful character. Such a delicious wooing of Potter, first to their side, then to his side.

Great job, and a wonderful closing story to the games.
