TEAM PHOENIX ENTRY: Beth H "Learning the Landscape "
Title: Learning the Landscape
Author: Beth H / [info]bethbethbeth
Team: Phoenix
Genre(s): Alternate Reality *Hover/Click for Games Definition of Alternate Reality* & Romance
Prompt(s): Tabloid Headlines
Rating: NC-17
Warning/Kinks: * *Strong language, semi-public fellatio, anal sex, references to despicable political allegiances, hate crimes, and other criminal activities.**
Word Count: ~21,000
Summary: Second generation celebrity, pop sensation, rising movie star: Harry Potter is looking for something more meaningful in his life than mere fame. However, when he inexplicably decides to make ex-con Steven Snape part of that "something more meaningful," well...it's too much to expect the press to ignore it forever.
A/N: (a) Apart from setting this story in America in 2006, some additional liberties have been taken with the timeline: Harry's parents (and any other "Marauders" who might make an appearance), have the same birth dates they have in canon. The rest of the characters - including Harry and Snape - were all born approximately five years later than their canon birth dates...and Harry is just over 21 for those of you who care about that sort of thing.
(b) The footnotes, which are dotted throughout the story, are partly educational and partly inserted for my own amusement. If you're easily jolted out of the narrative flow of a story, don't bother clicking on them. I guarantee you won't miss anything too significant.
(c) Most importantly, though...shifting this story away from a magical world and back into the real world means that the story, of necessity, deals with some groups and ideologies that JKR was able to examine by way of metaphors in her novels. Believe me when I tell you I'm taking them very seriously.
Many thanks: to the very patient mods - and to Meri and Regan V for their speedy and exceedingly helpful betas!

A wonderful story. I don't usually like non-magical Harry and Snape, but I have liked your work in the past and took a chance on it. Interesting writing and very believable characterizations. Thanks for a great read.

This was lovely, and so sweet by the end; Harry was particularly well-characterized, in all his adorable Gryffindorishness. One of my favorite parts had to be the footnotes, though, in which all the fun you had researching came through! Thanks for a really good read.

Excellent story; Harry and Snape both IC, as well as the minor characters and their use in the plot. Dore, Lucas and Ron were especially clever.

Love Snape as a snarky teacher even in bed.

Your Phoenix may have taken a little bite out of their Dragon with this one ;)

This was so enjoyable! I like how you explained Harry and Snape's pasts. The interactions between Harry and Snape were great. I love how bossy Snape was in bed! Hilarious.

Thank you for sharing such a creative and engaging fic!

Aww! A lovely, smooth read, with enough echoes of and allusions to canon that I didn't feel asea in the alternate reality. I loved your Snape - reading Machiavelli yet swearing the air blue, not to mention being bossy in bed ("Do I look like a girl to you?" *flail* I don't think I should have found that as hot as I did).

I also, randomly enough, liked the simile Harry folded like a cheap card table - such an image. Well done!

Wow. First, let me say, I usually don't bother reading non-magical AUs because I basically never like them. But MAN am I glad I read this! Fantastic!

I LOVE this Snape. The Neo-Nazi backstory works really well and the Allen Dore part-- genius! Sheer genius. And I really liked your Harry here...

And, yeah, the 'inexplicable connection' is a cliche and the dramatic press conference declaration of love is too-- but somehow you actually made it charming instead of icky, so somehow I even liked that.

Good job and thanks for sharing!

So, despite it's being non-magical AU, and set in America, I really liked this story. I liked your Harry, who despite his youth is so willing to go after what he wants, to stand up and say what he needs to, to acknowledge his errors and try to make amends. I also like the sweetness in him, the way he's still willing to believe in love at first sight and happily-ever-after.

I like the presence of Ron and Hermione (and 'John'), and your clever use of other canon characters. Rita Skeeter is just as smarmy without magic as she is with, and I think Dore is a brilliant take on Dumbledore's willingness to use others--use them up, if need be--for 'the greater good.'

Steven Snape is brilliantly drawn, and I think neo-Nazis are the perfect real-world analogue of the Death Eaters. It's a blessing they don't seem to have quite so successful a leader/focal point as Voldemort, but I fear they'll find one sooner or later. I think the thing I admire most about your Snape is his emotional courage. Even though he has not much experience in people caring about him, even though he has more than ample evidence that they'll screw you over if it suits them, even though he's really only just met Harry and really has no reason to believe he'll stick around, he's still willing to give the relationship a try.

Nicely done.

I have a thing for non-magical AUs if they're done well, and this was done very well. First of all, the characters. "John" was very recognisable as PoA Remus even before you mentioned that he's called Lupin. Hermione and Rita Skeeter were spot-on, and the way you explained Ron calling Harry "mate" made me laugh out loud.

Snape is wonderful. So much love for the way you have him bottoming! I perfectly well understood why Harry fell in love with him. Your Harry is just adorable. Hollywood needs a Harry like yours! The outing scene was very moving! Excellent job!

Note to the mods: the back button doesn't bring you directly back to the IJ post in case you've clicked the footnotes. It's of course easy to find the way back to the post, but I thought you might want to know.

Yay! As I said when I beta'd this, it's one of my favorite of your stories ever. I really enjoyed the subtlety of what you were saying as well as making both Harry and Snape in character in a totally out of character setting.

I am looking forward to reading this again and again.

I really enjoyed the parallels between Potterverse and the AU you've created. The Neo-nazis, Congressman Dore, it all comes together to make sense of Snape and his past. Perhaps inspired by the prompt Tabloid Headlines, I love the irony of Harry being a true celebrity.

Btw, this is how, I believe, one should go about writing a non-magic AU. Good job! Thank you!

This world you've created is wonderful! Everyone is still completely recognizable. I loved Snape in bed, his neo-nazi past, stealing the record with Lily's love on it :P . Harry is just wonderful-in his pursuit of Snape, his speech to the press especially. Spectacular job!

Cudoes!
There aren't too many Harry/Snape stories that work for me. I also avoid reading non-magical AUs.
Nevertheless, I decided to give this story a shot and I'm very happy I did. Your interpretation of the characters works perfectly!
Also loved how you reinterpreted canon events, e.g. Dore's affair with a Russian agent or Snape's tatoo.

I am so and so about reading non-magic AUs but I am so very pleased that I chose to give it a go. Wonderful work, and Harry and Snape who were very recognizable in a setting so unlike their own. I really enjoyed it immensely, this one goes on my to read again and again list. Thank you so much!

Like others who've commented I'm a bit so-so about non-magical AR's, but this one is really true to the spirit of Snarry. I enjoyed the parallels with the canon world, too. A most heart-warming story, thank you!

Very involving; trying to figure out Steven Snape's past as a regular reader and all the connections to the original Harry Potter books as a fan. I think Snape's 'shady past' situation was incorporated into the modern real world pretty well.
And the whole story is so terribly - romantic! A bit like a Hollywood movie, actually... Like many melodramas about celebrities in love with commoners.
I was I little surprised, however, that the detective element completely sidestepped the whole murder of Potters and Snape's relationship with them affair. I suppose, there may be much more hidden in Steven's past than what was revealed.

Thanks a lot for such a charming love story.

I was amazed how quickly I was drawn in and how much I enjoyed this story of the boys without magic. Dumbledore remained the same manipulative bastard, although this time Harry avoided entanglement. Aberforth still has a seedy bar. Hermione is still a know-it-all and Snape is very pushy bottom.
It was all good.

Y'know what? I SERIOUSLY like this! At first I balked a bit at the setting (Potter as an American just... no no no) but it's you, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Enjoyed it. I liked the parallels between canon!Harry as The Boy Who Lived and him as the young pop star, both of them having to deal with their fame and the consequences of growing up and doing what they want to do rather than what the public sees as 'right'.
Nice to see/read all the familiar people like Al Dore and John Lupin. Even Cedders made an appearance. Well done.
