TEAM PHOENIX ENTRY: Beth H "Learning the Landscape "
Title: Learning the Landscape
Author: Beth H / [info]bethbethbeth
Team: Phoenix
Genre(s): Alternate Reality *Hover/Click for Games Definition of Alternate Reality* & Romance
Prompt(s): Tabloid Headlines
Rating: NC-17
Warning/Kinks: * *Strong language, semi-public fellatio, anal sex, references to despicable political allegiances, hate crimes, and other criminal activities.**
Word Count: ~21,000
Summary: Second generation celebrity, pop sensation, rising movie star: Harry Potter is looking for something more meaningful in his life than mere fame. However, when he inexplicably decides to make ex-con Steven Snape part of that "something more meaningful," well...it's too much to expect the press to ignore it forever.
A/N: (a) Apart from setting this story in America in 2006, some additional liberties have been taken with the timeline: Harry's parents (and any other "Marauders" who might make an appearance), have the same birth dates they have in canon. The rest of the characters - including Harry and Snape - were all born approximately five years later than their canon birth dates...and Harry is just over 21 for those of you who care about that sort of thing.
(b) The footnotes, which are dotted throughout the story, are partly educational and partly inserted for my own amusement. If you're easily jolted out of the narrative flow of a story, don't bother clicking on them. I guarantee you won't miss anything too significant.
(c) Most importantly, though...shifting this story away from a magical world and back into the real world means that the story, of necessity, deals with some groups and ideologies that JKR was able to examine by way of metaphors in her novels. Believe me when I tell you I'm taking them very seriously.
Many thanks: to the very patient mods - and to Meri and Regan V for their speedy and exceedingly helpful betas!

A non-magical alternate reality set in America…hmm… I had some reservations going into this story but they were quickly dispelled by the quality storytelling. All of the characters were still recognizably themselves while being slightly changed from canon. I must admit that I was not happy with Snape’s name change, understandable though it was. But other than that minor quibble, I found Learning the Landscape to be simply stellar.

There were so many great lines:

"Do I look like a fucking girl to you?"

::smirks:: Nnnooooo, not at all…

(for an encore performance of "The Education of Young Mr. Potter")

::snickers:: That sounds delightful.

It seemed inconceivable that anything could go wrong.

Oh dear, tempting fate. Bad things are gonna happen now.

"Had I known that dates with celebrities were so fucking glamorous, I'd have started pimping myself out years ago."

Bwaaahahahahahaha!

"Potter, I've never been cute in my life."

::snerk::

and she's a little...enthusiastic about doing research."

::rolls eyes:: Bit of an understatement there.

"I seem to recall someone once telling me that you and I have a connection."

::beams:: Yes, yes you do!

I enjoyed the flow of the story: Harry and Snape meeting, 'instruction lessons' ::hehehe::, Aunt Minerva ::wibbles::, things going spectacularly wrong ::worries::, Snape’s shadowy past ::sighs sadly::, the paparazzi ::urgh::, rescue and revelations ::hopeful::, Skeeter ::shakes fist:: and setbacks ::headdesk::, Harry’s speech ::sniffs::, and the wonderful ending ::happyhappyjoyjoy::.

This was a marvelous, richly detailed story with such vibrant characterizations. An extremely well-crafted and highly memorable tale. Fantastic work! Kudos!

I quite enjoy non-magical AU/ARs and this one didn't disappoint! Lovely work - the characterizations were spot-on and I love the way you portrayed the small town of Woodstock. Good job! ;)

I have to commend you for taking the risk in going outside the box on this one in so many ways. Your efforts certainly paid off and you wrote a terrific story. The incorporation of so many familiar characters, whatever their names, was brilliantly done, and I definitely loved the minor characters in this.

There's enough of a backstory that I really felt that I knew what was going on, but it was incorporated in such a way that I really felt you were showing and not telling. For a non-magical AR set in America, that's damn impressive and speaks to how wonderful a writer you are.

Great job!

Heh, I never expected I'd read an AR set in the U.S., with Harry as a pop star of all things, and like it. But ex-con!Snape? Oh, that definitely intrigued me! So I thought I'd give it a go and I started reading and then couldn't stop. I liked this AR!Harry and Snape, how they were still recognisable as their canon selves but fit to this different reality. I loved how you drew parallels between this world and the Potterverse and I appreciated quite a few of your footnotes. *g*

So, yes I enjoyed this! Oh, and I was especially amused that Snape listened to Agnostic Front for some reason. *g*

Let me see if I get the basis of this story: Disney, thumbs down; Dreamworks, thumbs up...

LOL

Okay. So Steve and Harry live in a different universe and they get together. Loved the universe. Loved the footnotes and thank you for the back feature. Wish books came with that as well. Loved Hermione and John, Woodstock (OMG, Do I remember Woodstock! -- Well, no, not really. I was one of the very few people on the North American continent who did not get there at all.)

I liked the way you modified the characters so that they were there, but in disguise...except for Rita who is totally undisguisable.

The time that I read this (instead of completing that seemingly never-ending stack of marking) was well worth it. Even if you are on THAT team.

This man might be a genius at fellatio, but he was almost twice Harry's age, he looked like Dracula on a bad night, and he was clearly a dick, so why did it feel so important to not let him get away?
Dude, the connection!
I really enjoyed this! It was hard to believe how fast we went from the beginning of the fic right into the action. After that, I just held on, trusting that you knew where the car was heading and exactly how to get us there.
This was such a great little universe. I adored how you took a lot of fandom ideas and inverted them, and I soooo loved how you created Harry and Stephen's backgrounds. So many wonderful echos of canon painted to blend perfectly with this universe.

My favorite moment was the one with Harry discovering his mother's album in Snape's collection. I really felt that 'connection' there that Harry had been talking about. It reminded me of a similarly beautiful scene from the Time Traveler's Wife where the son listens to his late mother's records and reflects on the short time that he knew her.

Anyway, back to the point:
We don't really know if it was fate or chance that allowed Snape to steal the wrong record, but by that moment, I was so glad that he did. I could see the shock and joy in Harry's eyes as he discovered it too, and that made all weepy-happy.

Lovely work.

Wheeeee! What a wonderful story! Go TEAM!

I should tell you that I am not generally a fan of non-magic AU, but in the end I trusted you and I am so glad I did. This was so well done. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of canon characters who were IC like Hermione and Ron and even Rita Skeeter, and the clever comments scattered throughout were great. I appreciated the parallels you drew between DE's and Nazi's as well.

In the end I LOVED this because, despite the differences in this world, Snape was still Snape and Harry was still Harry, and really, they're who I want to read about, so yay! Throw in a bit of a mystery and some sex and I'm yours.

Great job! You kicked some iguana ass. ;)

You know, ever since you first presented this idea at the comm, I had wanted to read the final product. I love it! Woodstock and apartment in Greenwich Village (to own a place in the Village?!? I'm jealous *g*)? An ex-con with a myseterious background, saved and groomed by a manipulative politician? Your ideas are so creative, yet I have no trouble loving the HP cast's non-magical counterparts here as I love them in canon, because you kept them so in character :)

This is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Yay Team Phoenix! :D

I liked how you "Americanized" Harry Potter -- even down to the name changes such as Lucas Silver. This story flowed very well and kept me in it the whole time (and I hope that makes sense). And, yeah, if Disney's going to be picky about it's star kissing men, well... Dreamworks is better in that case :)

Great job!

Wow, what a startling, eye-opening read! :D I had a fun time seeing each new trick as you pulled it out of the bag--the whole Diggory scheme was totally wild! I could see it being like a Ludlum movie or something and yet it was such a great parallel to the HP books! This is some off-kilter and invigorating stuff you've written! :D

A lovely romantic comedy with a serious edge to it as well as an interesting setting and clever casting.

The smug-looking barn owl, Ruby’s hairy back and Ron’s slurred message were funny, Dore was as cold and calculating as his wizard counterpart. Hermione doing her research and John talking about Harry’s parents fitted into the story perfectly.

What I admired the most, though, was how you managed to keep Harry and Snape recognizable as characters and their problems similar to those they faced in canon. Also, Harry’s eagerness and growing curiosity moved the plot forward very enjoyably.

I loved to see Snape as a teacher. :) Another favourite scene of mine followed right after the ominous It seemed inconceivable that anything could go wrong.

This was so sweet:
Harry put his arms around Snape. He grinned and thrust forward, rocking his pelvis against Snape's. "I think your aging body is really hot."
"And I think you need a stronger pair of contact lenses," Snape said, but he leaned in and kissed Harry. At first, the kiss was hard, demanding, but almost immediately, Snape softened the kiss until his lips were barely touching Harry's. For a moment, the two men stood silently together, until Snape whispered, "I wish..."

Wonderful story!

You took away the magic and you moved the story to the US and I still recognised the characters. What an accomplishment.

I loved the transposition of the characters and the details to this new setting. The only thing that made me wonder was the change in Severus' name. I got used to it very easily. But, I did have a moment's pause when I discovered that Severus/Steven had buried his background - I almost expected to learn that he'd changed his name to something more common and less identifiable.

I did love this story though.

Now that's what I call a good story! You create a fantastic argument about canon in the context of a very tight, well-paced narrative. I felt like your use of real-life historical context was very well-done.

This is quite possibly the best Americanized (God, does it feel strange using a 'z' in place of an 's' *G*) version of Snape and Harry I've read in a long time. When we'd first discussed your idea over email, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I should have trusted yous instincts, because this turned out fabulous! I love how you've even changed the names to protect the innocent to fit your universe. Great job, Beth!

Because I enjoyed this fic so much, I've recced it at my journal here, and at [info]snapedom's Friday recs. If there's anything you'd like me to change, just let me know.
I loved your depiction of Snape and Harry, and the familiar characters popping up in the AR setting. I especially liked the way you tied the themes/events of the AR back to the original fiction, so that it was both newly fresh and relevant.

Oh, that was amazing! Weird, though, skimming through the comments to find how many people say they don't normally like non-magic AUs. I am actually quite a fan, and I even (although a Brit) like the transplantation to America bit, because if it's well done (and it was supremely well done here) the local colour that is brought in really adds a new dimension to the story. I think you judged perfectly how to bring in the cast without it seeming forced or unrealistic (a major problem in writing an AR) and the parallels you used were just so right.

The bit that nearly put me off reading? Popstar!Harry. (I had a few bad experiences on FF.Net when I first discovered fandom!). But again, this was no teenage wish-fulfillment, just a well-judged, and not overplayed, part of the wonderful scenario you created.

This should be required reading for anyone tempted to create an AR.

A real treat! :D

This is a perfect example of why I love AUs so very much. The universe you created here is wonderful! Snape's character especially touched me(perhaps because it reminds me of my beloved Oz fandom). The whole story is just amazing, and I know I'll be rereading it.

I love how you've reflected canon events in your world (Dumbledore in particular was really excellent, especially with Snape's observations about him). A great story. Thank you!
