CHAMPION INTERVIEW #37, theScarletwoman!
Your Name: thescarletwoman, aka, Lia
Archive link(s): either Skyehawke or scarletdreams though both are currently works in progress.
Your Team: Phoenix, FTW!
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
In my opinion, canon-compliant is what exists for us within the books. JKR has been doing a lot of those after specials and it's nearly impossible to keep up with them and even when she was still writing, there were times when information was contradicted. If you can go to your bookshelf, look up a fact or two in one of the books, then your fic is canon compliant. That includes anything from relationships to potions ingredients to character ages... etc.
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
There was one fic I read probably about five years ago and I've never been able to find it again. All I remember is that it was hosted on the Restricted Section and featured a Snape/Lupin/Sirius triangle. It's influence was that it introduced me to the world of slash in HP fandom. I started writing shortly after GoF came out and was a naive girl and stayed to the ships I could see happening in canon, namely Harry/Hermione at that point. That fic opened me to a whole new world.
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
I think the dynamic that's built between them in canon is really the most interesting. I may be writing an AU story but that's only insofar as Snape is still living at the close of canon. Knowing how Snape felt about Lily all those years, really doubles their relationship. When he sees Harry, is this his chance to be with Lily? Otherwise -- the amount of snark possible is wonderful. The relationships that are 'easy' are never the fun ones to write. You want a certain amount of challenge and with two men who relatively despise each other it's a writer's dream.
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
He'd be most happy to have the phoenix for use in ingredients, especially the phoenix tears. Then again, he wouldn't mind having a phoenix around to lift his arse out situations he manages to get himself into.
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
I would say that my greatest strengths lie either in dialogue or in description and I can't pick between the two. I had a writing teacher in high school who worked with me a lot on all aspects of writing but it was those two that he really beat into me and I know I wouldn't be the writer I am today without him!
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
Repetitive words. I tend to find a couple words I like and use them over and over and over again, often within the same paragraph. That and I just have to stop using just. *g*
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
I've had a couple collaborations in the work, but unfortunately they haven't come to fruition yet. Though I definitely would like to work on a collaboration at some point in the future!
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
I find it both. In one sense, the close of canon brought us all those new characters. I personally am not a fan of the epilogue kids, but they are there for use in fics if they want to be used. But on the other hand, so many ends were tied up and unless a writer wants to go completely AU, they have to explain why Harry is no longer with Ginny or any number of other details that have to be explained to keep a fic canon-compliant.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
Hrm... good question. I freely admit I'm a rather vanilla person and haven't written a lot by way of kink. However, I really would like to see fics dealing with one partner who is into 'insert x kink' and another who isn't quite so sure about it and having to work through each's preferences. Otherwise -- I love plot in my fics with a nice amount of smut thrown in. Give me a plotty fic and toss in smut and I'm a happy, happy camper.
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
I'm really excited. I've been branching out in my writing a lot over the past couple of years and when the sign-ups came around, I really wanted to try my hand at a format of this type. I'm really enjoying it so far -- just need a few more cheezits to feed my muse and we'll be all set!
