John Nettleship ~ To Sir, With Love ~ R.I.P.

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I don't usually double-post my Livejournal and Snapedom, but I wanted everyone to see this important news

Claire M. Jordan, a member of Harry Potter Network, posted a sad message yesterday about the passing of John Nettleship, the Chepstow teacher upon whom J. K. Rowling based the character of Severus Snape. She knew him well, and all credit goes to her for use of these photographs.

See Death Notice on the Caerwent Community Site and thanks to Claire for the link.

Read more discussion of these pictures and talk to Claire about John Nettleship on HPN

From ClaireMJordan:
Lovely Johnny Nettleship died (yesterday) morning. He didn't want to disseminate photographs of himself "when he was Snape" too widely in case he was mobbed by salivating fen, but now that's no longer an issue, this is John "when he was Snape". Rowling's Snape is in origin basically an uglified version of John and the less cartoonish of her drawings of Snape shows him with a straight nose which hooks over at the tip (John's nose was straight with a blob on the end), rather than a nose which is bent at the bridge.

Snape probably has jaw-length or neck-length hair most of the time, like John's, and like JK's own drawing of him. There's no mention of his having long hair at all in the first book, which implies he probably didn't, at least at first. He appears at the start of CoS with shoulder-length hair, which doesn't come as a surprise to Harry so he must have been growing it for some months. Thereafter his hair is never again described as shoulder-length, although it is called long several times. It swings freely in curtains, which means it probably isn't so long as to catch on his shoulders.

From another post:  He was still a good-looking bloke in his 70s, and at that age he was almost supernaturally beautiful: like a cross between an 18th C romantic poet and a slightly undernourished pre-Raphaelite knight.  And despite being nearly forty, when JK knew him he looked about eighteen.  [When he *was* eighteen he actually didn't look so good, because he hid his light behind a pair of thick black plastic Austin Powers specs and a dreadful little beard that looked like pubes.  But that was the late '50s all over.]

He was a true science geek, including being a bit socially naive.  It's my opinion that JK's real grudge against him was that she fancied him madly and he *didn't notice*, so she uglified him into Snape to say "Nyah - I never fancied you anyway!"

  • Sad news! Nettleship was always kind and humorous in his interviews.

    (And wow, he was hot!)
  • He looked great and rather "Snapish".
  • John

Back in 2007, I learned by chance that John was very ill. I mentioned it to Claire and later learned that she had come to know him well. I had seen these photos a long while back, but like Claire, agreed to not share them publicly. While I have emailed back and forth just a little to John and spoke to him once on the phone, I did not know him well. Claire did.

I read the comments on the Harry Potter Network. One thing Claire does not mention is John's voice. While his speaking voice is perhaps a bit monotone - somewhat like Rickman's, but a different accent - his singing voice was absolutely beautiful. Especially perfect for folk songs.

Posting about this is hard. I hate finding I've written about him in present tense and going back and changing "is" to "was".

  • I'll miss his at once kind and grouchy, witty interviews. To those that knew him, condolonces. And he right hand picture of a young John Nettleship looks closer to My!Snape than Rickman. (I won't bash Alan, he's a top notch actor)
    • hbp!movie question...

Did the HBP movie keep the bathroom scene, where Harry nearly kills Draco and Snape demands Harry's Potions book? (Sorry for asking this, I just for the life of me can't remember this scene happening in the movie).
      • Re: hbp!movie question...

Yes, they kept the bathroom scene. Severus used the spell Vulnera Sanentur to knit Draco's wounds. It was quite a powerful scene.
        • Re: hbp!movie question...

          But no Potions book dialogue?
          • Re: hbp!movie question...

I cannot remember with 100% accuracy. It seems to me that Harry left the wet toilet and Severus was left with Draco.
            • Re: hbp!movie question...

This was bothering me for the longest. In HBP, Harry has that LOL conversation with Snape, over his new nickname, and I did not remember it happening in the movie at all. What you're saying makes sense, though. Thank you (for that^^).
  • RIP, Professor. You really were a good looking 40-something.

Why is this still here? Claire Jordan was banned from that forum and in part, the blame can be led at the door of this group for facilitating her belief that it was acceptable to break a promise to a dead man, and her belief that it was acceptable to inappropriately speculate on the exact relationship between JKR and Nettleship, as well as Nettleship's personal life.

I request that out of common decency, this post be deleted or updated with pertinent information.

  • Almost everybody has at least one carpet in their house. Which means that almost every person needs to freshen their carpets from time to time. That is because carpets tend to absorb a lot of the dirt and dust that are in the air as well as any odours from the room. If you do not want to use any commercial carpet cleaners, because they are expensive and contain a lot of harsh chemicals, then you do not have to. All you need is a box of baking soda and a bottle of vinegar.
