Out for a run
Victor awoke at his normal time...very early. He did his early morning workout routine and finshed off with a morning jog.

He had heard from Susan about a new neighbor. So, he thought he'd run in that general direction. See if he saw anyone. It was his inquistive nature.

Plus, it was always a good idea to keep an eye out in this place. He still didn't trust it. Things may seem like their close to perfect around here, but Vic knew that just when things seem to be great, they had a way of turning fast.

At least in his experience.

Funnily enough he was about to run into someone who was actually looking for his new neighbors. She was a petite young woman with dark eyes and hair. Her posture told a story of one that was rarely social, but her eyes had a shine of intelligence and eternal hope in things.

In one hand she held a note with scribbled directions and the other hand was tugging at the large scarf she had wrapped around her neck. "I don't see how anyone can read his handwriting. How am I supposed to find him? I don't even know where the heck I am..."

The young woman looked up in time to see Vic running. She thought he looked familiar to her but this whole place had her a little confused so she shook it off. She waved at him to get his attention. "Excuse me! Sir? May I please ask for your assistance?"

Vic saw the young woman up ahead and slowed down, and came to a stop when she asked for his help.

"Sure," he said giving her a small smile. "How can I help you?"

She gave him a shy smile and held up her note. "I'm trying to find this address. My brother and his friend came here under.. um... well I suppose you could say peculiar circumstances from what I understand."

She was staring at him now. He really did look familiar to her now that he closer. And then it hit her. She'd seen pictures with a man who looked like him. Old pictures at that. It was a little jarring, but she accepted the fact people had look alikes in the world. "The streets all look so similar. It's a little disconcerting."

"I did hear about a couple that came here recently. I think their up this way a few blocks," he said pointing up the street. "Can take you there if you'd like?"

He couldn't help but notice she was looking at him weird. Normally that'd creep him out, but in this place, its possible he just happened to look like someone she knew.

"Place takes getting use to. One street looks like the other. Its small landmarks you have to notice to see the difference between each street."

"If you wouldn't mind doing so." She was grateful for his timely arrival. "I wouldn't want to impose on you."

She glanced around the neighborhood with a curious smile. "I get a very strange feeling from this place... perhaps it's just me. But it's also a little cozy. Quiet. Not like where I grew up."

It was then that she realized how rude she was being. "Oh, my manners! I'm sorry. I'm asking for help and I don't even ask your name." She held out her free hand. "My name is Tessa, Tessa Vaughn. And you?"

He shook her hand. "Victor, but everyone tends to call me Vic." He turns towards a certain someones house. "Or Superdork depending on who you talk to. And I dont mind. Happy to help."

He begins to lead her in what he hoped was the right direction.

"Oh, its not just you. This place might seem cozy, there is something off with it. Havent figured out what it is yet. But it does kind of remind me where I grew up. Save for the bad feeling thing."

Tessa's eyes went wide as she retrieved her hand. Victor? But that was... It wasn't possible. If he was the same one then he hadn't aged much if at all in over the years! Her mouth hung slightly open. "That's.. I mean.. Um..."

She shook her head. Just what had her brother and Amaya gotten themselves into? She needed to get back on topic. Hopefully he'd pay her moment of confusion and shock no attention. "I've always wondered what it was like to grow up in a place like this..." She was a little wistful now at that thought. "My family isn't what you'd call conventional."

Vic was slightly confused by the reaction. A question to be answered at another time.

She passed it off as nothing, he'd do the same...for now.

"No family is ever fully conventional. Mine was in many ways conventional, but my parents had jobs that made us slightly different than most families."

Victor reached into his pocket feeling the pocketwatch. Even on a run he kept it with him.

"I suppose you're right." Though she doubted his parents jobs were as unconventional as her own. "My parents are.. well, my family has traveled all my life and before that." Tessa chuckled. "Sometimes I think that I was born into the wrong family."

"If you don't mind my asking, what is that you do, Victor?" She was curious and she had to admit she wanted to find out if he was just a coincidence or something else.

Victor chuckled. "We all feel that about our families at some point."

Vic had found a way to avoid talking about his pirate days...half truths.

"Well, I use to travel a lot. Going around place to place. Helping people. But I gave up that job a long time ago. Just didn't fit there anymore. Stuff happened. But now, I teach self defense lessons in town.

"Please don't misunderstand me," she said worriedly, "I love my family. My parents are amazing and my older brother is my best friend... And my grandfather! There's no one like him." She was smiling again. "But I just.. I don't think I fit in."

People tended to underestimate Tessa at times. They took her shy personality and assumed she was naive and easy to fool. But she used her shyness as a way of observing others. Her brother said she was the sneakiest of the two of them for her ability to read people. She knew of half truths when she heard them.

"You traveled too?" She tilted her head to look at him. "Have you ever been to Traneos?" It was her family's home town. City rather, and where her she currently lived and worked. "It's where I live."

"I can understand that. Just finding your place takes time. We all have our place. Even if we cant see it."

He made a good point, one that caused her to merely nod silently in acceptance and agreement.

He was still being cagey. It seemed it was game now and Tessa had to admit it was a little bit fun. She'd have to try a little harder. "Really? I do enjoy it there. The botanical gardens near the governor's mansion are lovely this time of year. I heard there was a benefit concert being held there next week... Sharada is going to headline it." Tessa frowned as she looked down. One of the laces on her boots were undone. With a sigh she crouched down and began to retie them. "May I ask where you're from?"

The name Shar was all too familiar to him. Though he wished it wasn't.

"She like have a band or something for that benefit concert?"

"You'd be surprised on what I've heard of and where I've been." She rose to her feet, her boots properly laced again. "I think that's why I'm good at my job.. I've traveled everywhere and it makes my current career a bit more simple since I already have all the connections I need."

Shar was a name that had been around since she was a little girl. She had been a popular celebrity for the entirety of Tessa's life and she was told the woman had once traveled with her family. It was an amazing connection when she was a child. Now it was interesting at best, but it was a way to see any changes in Victor's behavior.

"She's a dancer and a singer. She's extremely popular." Tessa gave him a curious look. "Haven't you heard of her?"

"I can honestly say I've never heard of this particular singer and dancer. Think I went to high school with someone of the same name, but seriously doubt its her."

He points to the house a few houses down from where they were. "House you're looking for is there I believe."

He starts to head in that direction.

Her eyes narrowed as he walked ahead of her. He was lying. She could feel it and it bothered her. Not because he was trying to throw her off, but because he apparently held his past with such disdain that it was something she wanted to say he should be ashamed of.

But she held her tongue on that, as she had no place to say such things to him, even if she had finally decided that this was no coincidence and that he was the same Victor from her mother's past.

Tessa took a mellowing breath and hurried to catch up to him. "Have you ever been on an airship?" The game was almost over, she decided. Her next question would all depend on how he answered.

"Yes. You?"

He kept his past hidden because he didn't like talking about it. Not because he hated what he did as an airpirate, but because some of the memories he just wanted to forget.

A lot of them still stung him.

He politely opened the gate in the front yard that led to the house.

"I grew up on one." She replied and stepped through the gate. She paused and stepped in front of his path. "I think I know you."

Yes, she was sure of it. She had to be completely sure before allowing him to meet her brother. It.. it was not a scene she would wish to see. Her brother's reaction would be unpredictable at best. "At first I wasn't sure, but now I am. You knew my family."

Vic sighed and leaned on the fence.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I knew your family. Fought on the ship as a first mate to Ava, but I promise you...only about half of what you heard is true."

He was kind of surprised he was even mentioned after he left. A tale or two maybe, but nothing extraordinary.

Figured he just would have been a passing memory.

So she was correct. He was the same Victor. She stared up at him in contemplation before reaching for his face and forcing him closer to her eye level. It was a normally out of place gesture for her, but she had to know how this could be! "How? It's not possible for you to look this young! You look like you did in the old pictures my mother has of her old crew!" She peered at him carefully as if trying to find any wrinkle on him to show signs of age.

"Did you die? Were you brought back like my grandfather?" Tessa had one mystery solved but now there was a new one. How had the man not aged in over twenty years? "Perhaps you have an enchantment over you?"

"Lots of exercise. Strict diet. And I moisturize."

He gives her a small smile. "Obviously, I'm a bit behind in your timelime. For me, its only been a little over five years since I left the Skye."

So, Ava had kids...with him...great. This will be great for his next thearapy session. Looking at her again, he realized how much she looked like Ava.

"That or I'm a rugedly handsome immortal. I'd bet on the timeline thing though."

She let him go with a shocked expression. "Only five... but it's been over twenty years!"

Tessa struggled with this information and she fought through a bout of confusion, terror, and bewilderment before ending with worry. "What kind of place is this?" She grabbed his hand this time and gave him a pleading expression. "Please, you must tell me! My brother and Amaya are here! Are they safe?" It was obvious that these two people meant the world to her. If anything were to happen to them, she didn't know what she'd do.

He cupped her hand reassuringly.

"I think its some sort of nexus type thing. I'm not sure of the big details. That stuff was always a bit beyond me. More logic and fighting. I don't know your brother or Amaya, but I'm sure when you knock on that door they'll be there perfectly fine. Promise."

He takes her up to the door.

A nexus? She wasn't exactly sure what that meant. It was something she would need to ask him for more details about later. "I worry none the less... You see Amaya received a notice that someone had bought her this home. It did not say who or why. Merrick, that's my brother, told me that it only had directions..." Much like the letter she had received.

She raised her hand and knocked on the door before glancing at Victor again. This situation was quite odd and still worrisome. "I'm not sure if you care.. but my mother has not said an unkind word about you my entire life." Even when talking about the end of it all, she did not speak ill of him. Perhaps time made things easier for her or perhaps it was merely a choice for her. Even so... "However.. my brother has formed other opinions. He is.. well.. he's very much like all the men in his life." She offered him a weak smile. "But please, should he meet you.. don't judge him too harshly. He is a very good man."

"Get that from your mom," he said with a whistful smile. Like he had to tell her that. "Though the weirdness behind them coming here would raise some alarm. Got a weird note myself with an offer for a place. Came to an open house found a place."

Vic turned and listend as she told him about how Ava spoke of him after everything. "Thanks," he said softly.

"Other opinions huh? Must get that from his dad," he muttered under his breath.

The knock summoning Amaya from the exploration of the house she had yet to be acquainted with, she was in for a surprise when she found the one on the other end.

"Tessa!," the black mage said, seeming happy to see another friendly face. It was a short-lived smile as concern graced her beautiful features soon after, "What are you doing here, love?"

While never unwelcome, the small woman hated the idea of something happening to the girl who had practically became her sister.

Near her was a seemingly familiar man to which she gave a surprised look toward seeing. While familiar, she couldn't quite place him. Pictures of Victor was mostly in passing for this woman as she was not the child of his former lover. Instead a woman belonging to her own crew.

Realizing her rudeness thanks to the shock given to her, she opened the door for the both of them, "Please excuse my manners. It has been an... interesting few days. Please. Come inside."

No sooner had they been allowed to step inside had Tessa embraced the woman in a fierce hug. "I was worried about you both!" She was so relieved that Amaya appeared to be fine. "I received a strange letter with directions to find you no more than a day after I began to ask anyone if they'd heard from you!" If Amaya was safe and not frantic then Tessa could assume that Merrick was as well.

Once she was reassured everything was well, Tessa released her would be sister (so she hoped) if her brother ever stopped being such a... boy. She shook her head at what she'd done. "I'm being rude. Amaya, this is Victor." She hoped Amaya understood that it was the same Victor as Merrick had no doubt spoke of. "He was kind enough to help me find your house."

She gestured at Victor. "Victor, this is Amaya. She's a dear friend and my brother's first mate."

The short woman had heard things from Hilary considering the person of Victor, but... it did seem to be a collective biased of hate. At least she knew better than to give the girl an apple on this holiday she spoke of. Smiling, wanting to give him time to prove his worth or worthlessness she agreed, "It is nice to meet you as well. Thank you both for your concern. I am fine. And your brother is fine as well, love. If I may say, I think he's kind of enjoying this."

Her eyes looked to Tessa from Victor once her words were meant for her rather than the former pirate.

Once releasing Tessa from the firm embrace they were in, she looked toward the opposite end of the house calling, "Merrick! We have visitors."

They had been exploring the house, looking for clues to what this place meant. If anything. Something that would tell them why she had been so kindly been given an invitation here.

"Thank you," she commented unsure, "It was bought on my behalf. I believe."

The girl seemed confused for a moment as if she wasn't entirely sure what her invitation meant just yet.

Merrick had been busying himself in the kitchen when he heard his name called. He had found this strange place highly interesting, particular the fact that no one had appeared to harm them. But he had also discovered something else... He joined Amaya as he scarfed down his findings. It was a strange and spongy yellow cake apparently called a Twinkie.

His eyes narrowed at the sight of Victor, but the glare faded as soon as he saw the young woman beside him. "Tessa!" He quickly rushed over and swept his sister up into a spinning hug. She laughed merrily at his antics, up until he shoved another Twinkie into her mouth. "Try this! It's brilliant."

Tessa nearly choked on the forced treat but did as she was asked. Once finished she glanced at Amaya and Victor before giving her brother a wobbly smile. "Um.. that was.. interesting?"

Unfortunately Merrick's attention was no on Victor. "And I see you've made a new friend." His face was stern as he stared down the other man. "Captain Merrick Vaughn." He was rather sure the thoughts in his mind were no doubt the same as ones his sister had upon meeting this stranger. Either way, any male in the company of his younger sister would be looked at in disdain by the protective older brother that he was.

His icy look was one that seemed to stem from both his parents. To say which was more of an influence however was nearly impossible. With Merrick it seemed as if he embodied traits from all those he grew up idolizing.

"Victor... I see." He glanced at Amaya and Tessa. Tessa nodded as if confirming his silent query as to the name. A part of him wanted to deck them an, if only for what he felt was right. But the man had given his sister aid and to disrespect her trust in the man so soon was not something he enjoyed doing. He restrained himself and decided to ask him about a mystery plaguing him since they'd arrived. "Since you're here, perhaps you can answer a question for me... Upon our arrival I saw a woman.. I thought I was mad at first, but now that I see that you're here, I wonder... She looked identical to our mother. Is she...?"

Tessa's eyes widened and she looked at Amaya for confirmation to that before looking at Victor expectantly.

"No...she's not. She's some one that just happens to look exactly like her. A duplicate. One of the many strange nexus type things that happen on occasion. But she's not Ava. Thought the same thing when I got here. Just a crazy coiencidence."

There was that word again. Tessa allowed most of her questions to remain sidelined, save for one. She stepped forward and placed her hands on her hips. "You used that word before... Nexus." Her head quirked to the side. "What exactly is a nexus?

Perhaps that would answer some of her other questions. "And what exactly does that have to do with anything?"

Two voices spoke in unison. "Cafe?" Tessa and Merrick exchanged a look and Tessa turned to Victor. This new information was a lot to processes. "What cafe do you speak of? Is it very far?"

"You say that as if you're going to go." Merrick said with a wary look at her.

"It's a possibility." Tessa replied without looking back, her attention on Victor. She was indeed pondering on going to this cafe. Though she was anything but an adventurer, she was very good at collecting information when needed. Though it was usually through books and research that she did so... "Is this place dangerous?"

Merrick scowled. That wasn't entirely helpful nor was it reassuring to him. Especially not while his sister was here. While he would always put his life on the line for the two women here, he admitted to himself that he had more confidence in Amaya's ability to survive than Tessa's. He wasn't happy with the thought of her wandering about on her own.
