Green Arrow
I've never been a Green Arrow fan. When I was a kid I was annoyed by his JLA membership. Most kids do not  understand subtleties so to me he was a boring Robin Hood/Batman concept. Those feeling did adjust as I matured, but never quite went away.

Until Justice #10

Supergirl is mind controlled and holding family and friends of the Justice League as hostages. Green Arrow & Black Canary are on a covert mission to take Supergirl down with a kryptonite arrow. Clayface is chasing them down so they haven't much time.

I love John Stewart's heroic bravado at the end. Green Arrow saves my favorite Green Lantern
so I guess now I'm a fan.
To be honest, I love the GA from the Brave & Bold animated series.

Why don't I own Justice yet?

Because it was split into two volumes when it shouldn't have been.

They are releasing an Absolute edition in November.

I'm not sure. I picked up all twelve by winning an eBay auction for them (I even got the fancy covers too), so you don't really need the 3 hardcovers (which is slightly ridiculous).

As someone who actually LIKES Green Arrow and Black Canary together (when it's done well, which is to say, not recently) I also liked the "I love you too" moment. The runup is that GA won't automatically say "I love you too" when Dinah says "I love you" but rather waits for the best moment. I should see if I can hunt up the page in question.

I'm missing something -- it looks like John really did get the arrow right through his sternum. But he pulls it out with no blood? The ring protects him on contact? Trick arrow, tipped with foam rubber?

Alex Ross <3 anyway. This goes on the want list.

I could be wrong, but maybe it had John's Ring on it?

I think you're exactly right, it seems very clear that Ollie delivered the ring to John. But there's definitely an arrowhead in one panel, and two panels before it seems to be sticking out of his chest.

"It's just a flesh wound!"

And he's already wearing the ring as he's pulling the arrowhead out. I think these pages must be missing SOME sort of explanation because I can't see the logic here either.

Ugh, I don't remember the post very well, but someone telepathic was messing with John's mind, so he decided to get wacky in return. After that it's all Lucy in the sky with diamonds, go ask Alice when she's ten feet tall stuff.

The ring's (at least, the one's like Hal and John got) have a built-in "Protect bearer from mortal harm" function.

It's pretty evident the ring flew onto his hand and allowed him to catch the arrow before it actually hit him. If you look at the panel where you first see the ring, the arrow's not actually in him but is being held between his fingers. The other shots were made to look like it was actually embedded in his chest for suspense and all that other storytelling nonsense. ;)

Yeah, after looking carefully a couple times, John's right hand is always out of view until the ring reveal. That arrowhead is just a little too misleading. Or I'm too picky.

GA shot an arrow with the GL ring attached. There aren't any pages missing to give the reader any advanced warning. One helluva trick shot!

Isn't it unfortunate that to go along with the superhearing, Supergirl doesn't have superspeed or super-vision which would allow her to see that it's NOT a Green-K arrowhead whilst it's en route.

Oh, wait...

That's how I always took it - he basically shot the ring onto his finger (you can see him down below, with hands up), and then with it on, he stopped the arrow from actually hitting him.

This issue is one of my favorites of the entire series. The scene right before with Ralph is awesome, pure awesome. "Let's see Plastic Man do this!" plus all the internal dialog of Ollie....ya, you'll love him after this issue.

Thanks for bringing up the scene with EM.You're right, the part with Ralph was pure awesome.

Justice was at its best during the small moments when all the heroes, regardless of power levels proved themselves.

John Stewart is your favorite Green Lantern? I've met very few people who share that sentiment.

In discussions about Green Lantern with friends, I've realized that Stewart is my least favorite Lantern, not because I don't like him, but because I am disinterested in a character I know so little about. I am eager, though, to be converted.

What makes him so awesome? Are there any great John Stewart books or stories that you'd recommend (or, better yet, any thing you'd be willing to scan)?

Thanks!

Yeah, I will take your Pepsi Challenge and dig up some of the better John Stewart moments and scan them. It might be a while but I will do it. (-:

We should do a challenge week along those lines. That would be fun.
