I really think in ASBAR Miller goes--and goes pretty hard--for trying for his own take and that it's a purposefully extreme take. Like Robin almost kills Hal, and the way Batman's always running around laughing and doling out very, very extreme violence all over Gotham.
But, like you say here, Batman (and Robin) are usually written as both being more compassionate and solemn about their duty.
