"If you've gotta go, go with a smile." Of course, the Joker meant it in an entirely different way, but it still applies here. There are too many miserable, wretched deaths in comics these days - deaths where someone dies in agony, beating themselves up about how they weren't good enough or they'd failed or whatever. Eddie went out with a literal bang (OK, a 'Fwish'; whatever) - he died happy in the knowledge that he was doing the right thing, and doing his friends proud. He died quickly and heroically - I can think of worse ways of dying. Anyway, this is COMICS. If someone thinks they could write a good story with the character, he'll be resurrected in a flash. I can think of a half-dozen ways it could be done off the top of my head - you can't keep a good hero down.
