I don't know about that. I have an old etiquette book from the early 1900s and while it's too prim and proper to talk about infidelity, it pretty much puts everything on women.
Also keep in mind that this isn't a story meant to entertain or titillate, but advice for women in relationships. These are the kind of expectations that were heaped upon women (be the perfect maid, cook, fashion model, lover, mother, but don't get boring, and don't nag, and don't bother him about your problems, because it's all about him and keeping him happy, not you), and when you think about past attitudes toward women's rights, it's small wonder stories about the woman having some romantic adventure would be appealing.
