Both the writing and the art on this seem considerably above par. In particular, the page layout on that second scan looks years ahead of its time. And the whole idea of Ceres taking an interest in a plant creature could have been very promising. The Heap becoming her champion foreshadows both the Man-Thing as Guardian of the Nexus of Realities and Swamp Thing as plant elemental / protector of the Green / Parliament of Trees / whatever.
Mind you, I'm impressed at a Golden Age comics writer choosing Ceres as an appropriate deity here. I've seen comics from the same era that described Mars as the "blacksmith of the gods" (presumably Vulcan was the god of rubber) or considered Loki an appropriate foe for Venus. But whoever wrote this had obviously read some actual mythology books...!
