I didn't say that he was known for it, only that he was not totally bereft of one. More modern interpretations, including Waid and Johns, tend to write him as a slightly sarcastic 'quipper.' It's as legitimate as anything else (and even classic Hal had the typical superhero inclination towards cheesy one liners), and it's silly to suggest that Ryan Reynolds shouldn't be playing him because the character's not 'funny' enough (and as I said, not exactly fair to Mr. Reynolds either).
