This is interesting, because it deals with an aspect of the New Gods which is not often dealt with - that is to say, if they are the NEW Gods, who were the Old Gods? We know that they aren't any of the Earthly pantheons, because we've seen that those are still in action - and besides, they dwell on earth, whereas the New Gods live on another planet. So there must have been a previous era of Space-Gods, and evidently Sirius here is one of them. This also explains how a fair amount of the New Gods are nowhere near as powerful as we would expect from a god - most of the REALLY powerful godly bloodlines were snuffed out in whatever unearthly Ragnarok did in the Old Gods. What we're left with ranges from near-omnipotent (Darkseid) to almost human (Scott Free). And I like how soft-hearted Scott is depicted here. It's like Apokolips either breaks your basic nature or strengthens it - and Scott's basic nature is as a good guy, so he becomes REALLY good.
